The story is in the thread below
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=26804

The bottom line is now Flower has gotten aggressive and is unable to come out of her cage, perhaps adding to her aggression, because her cage is small. My son needs to find a wonderful home for her. He has worked with her in the past to get her back to her sweet self, but when she turned aggressive again in the fall, that is when he started thinking of giving her to someone that can give her more time and the life she needs. He is 22 and doesn’t have the patience or desire to go through this again with her and owning a "wild animal". We have been in the wrong section on this board for the past few months looking for help. He is very much attached to her, and researched and waited up to an entire year before buying her. This was an unforeseen problem that arose, and he is just trying to do right by her now.

Tomorrow is the day that she will be going to a person that I just do not feel good about. My son has tried so many avenues to find the perfect home for Flower and gotten nowhere.

If there is anyone out there that can help, this is an emergency. I do not want to see Flower placed with a person who may use her for strictly breeding or with a question about his place/character. She has been a faithful pet, but since she got out of her cage for one full day in the house, it is almost as if she got a taste of freedom, and turned her into a different chipmunk. Chet has tried for six months dutifully every day to rectify the situation and tried everyones advice on this board.

At the urging of some members, I have moved this thread to this area. My son had found a taker for her and today was suppose to turn her over. I urged him to please hold off...something just didn't seem right and I was getting numerous messages about this person. Now I just hope that I can find the "right" person to love Flower and give her the home she deserves.

Please if there is anyone who can help with this situation….please speak up now…we are desperate for help.

I have tried to reach muffin......can anybody get to her by phone? I also spoke to Wolfy about flying......we have go to do something to get her to Muffin ASAP.

Wolfy....is the cage size a big issue for you/Chet right now? If she is in a larger cage, could/would you keep her for a longer period of time?

Some rehabbers in Kentucky are also working on this but it takes hours.....maybe a day.
Hang on Chet!

OK it was yesterday that she was on...here is what she wrote...

"Sorry I haven't been in touch - computer problems are still haunting me. Every time I think it's fixed, it isn't! I should be in touch more now - I have a 'loaner' computer until mine gets fixed.

I still would love to have Flower if we could just get her here. I'm sorry to say that neither Lance nor I can do a lot of driving - about an hour or two is all we can manage. And when baby season gets here, we won't even be able to do that.....instead of 24 hour days, we suddenly have 2 or 3 hour days and no nights at all, and many many hungry mouths wide open and calling us, wanting constant breakfasts, wanting it hot, and wanting it NOW!!!! Hi Wolfysluv, i really wish i could of helped, if you had of lived in the U.K. i could of helped you find a home for her but i don't know many people in the U.S. wanting Chipmunks, Chippies are much more popular in the U.K. and more common as pets.

I think Muffin sounds good i don't like the sound of this guy you mentioned doesn't sound a good home. I'm sure you want the best for Flower, good luck finding her a loving forever home.

I read about finding the Dog Samson a home so know good things happen on this board :D

I've sent an email to a critter rescue in FL that specializes in exotics.
The residents are animals that have been removed or surrendered and need a forever home.

I have visited and it's a wonderful place - large property, private - no visitors - just the volunteers.
The animals are very well cared for in big enclosures, some are allowed to roam freely on the property.

I will follow up tomorrow with a phone call.
It would likely be a matter of space being available.
All prayers are welcome!

No luck on the Tennesee rescues...one is out of business apparently. Have emailed the others. One of those kicked back.

Still waiting on Wolfysluv to contact me re: options for getting Flower to muffinsquirrel.

One rescue burned to the ground in November...that's why their email kicked back. How horrible for them and all the lives that were lost.

I'm in chattanooga. Chet can drive a few hours. He also has money for gas if he doenst' drive or doesn't drive much.

Is she okay in the 3 foot by 18 inch cage if she is not getting out for long? I mean how long will she be "okay". She's down and out. But healthy and very, very well cared for.

Chet was hoping plans could by made by tomorow before he is to make new arrangements with the man. He is still wavering about the plans for the man that he talked to. Whether to cancel out on the fella completely, to request some more time before giving her to him, or doing it tomorow. The man contacted me via email. I haven't really read it. I glanced and the guy is willing to have Flower fly to him via Delta Dash (his expense). Chet doesnt know what to think of all this. If a home was planned at least for the near future here for flower, he'd rather wait and go that route. Its the original route he planned for and waited all of this time for.

I feel so bad, I mean Chet said yes to this man. I supported it before I started to get funny feelings. Now this man has made plans for her. Ya know? He went to the trouble (as chet did) putting this day aside for getting her. And Chet couldnt' go do it. He's a member of this board, and I'm hoping that if he see's all this ... that as an animal lover he'd understand if someone wanted to go back to their first choice of homes for their baby. And that we are just being ever so careful in checking people out and listening to our feelings. I don't want to hurt his feelings.

Wow. Florida is so doable (transportation). I have ferret people connections in GA that I'd hate to ask for help (they are busy night and day rescuing), but would help if asked I'm certain.

I kept hearing rescues in FL were tapped out. So, Ill pray tonight.

Yah, the wildlife resources here are so bad. I mean you have no idea. Several years back it was so bad, I was begged to rehab for this area (I was already taking in birds and such, nursing them back to health, etc, then sending them on to a rehabber bird person in Nashville for release). I was told by one of only like 3 rehabbers in this part of the state that they were so desperate they'd help me get a liscence by giving me intense training time at their place and "bumping up my hours" to get me there faster. Are you getting what I mean? Sounds bad, they wouldnt ever do anything to put animals in harms way or send me out unprepared... but for here its' a life and death thing. And its to the point ... that it's almost like anyone is better than no one.

I totally understand what you mean about his feelings. I do. But, please understand, that this thread just came to the attention of many (ok, some...) today. I don't understand why this man wants Flower so badly? I mean you can get chipmunks other places than TSB can't you? And wanting to fly her too, just doesn't add up to me. It's not that he is attached to her. What are his plans for her?
See, what I am trying to say...if a member came on and said, I want Flower and this is what her life will be like once I get her....I know that I would feel better. Where did this man come from? How long has he been a member here? Is he going to make her a house pet and give her a comfortable life? I guess that we feel like we are family here, and when one of the little critters is being given a new home...we just want to make sure it is the best possible place....OR at least try to hold off for a little while.
BUT if this is what you and your son feel is the best place for Flower, than you have to follow your heart...:Love_Icon

WE ARE TRYING to make plans BUT, "by tomorrow" is pushing it. We need to find MS, who has computer problems, and get Flower to her. That's the bottom line. If that man is reading this, and I am confident he is, he knows that Flower needs another loving home, not a show animal situation. If you don't have a large enough cage for Flower, PM me. Please. He's willing to fly her? So are we ! But is that really an option? Cargo hold? Death sentence perhaps. What are the restrictions on flying her? A home IS planned for Flower -with MS. It's in the works but it has to take some time. Isn't it odd that this man became a member specifically to obtain a chipmunk and eleven squirrels? It may just be me, but I find that unconscionable and reprehensible. Yes, you came here looking for a chippie or help in obtaining one BUT for a very different reason. I'm sure you and Chet are just sick over this BUT please, A chance is better than NO chance. Tell the man, thanks but no thanks. Trust me, he'll be just fine without Flower.

He didn't try vets, because being chattanooga, he thought they'd be tapped. Its just not the same here as most cities concerning animals. They just aren't a "priority" here the same as other places I"ve lived or visited. There are little to no wild life resources at all. People looking for help with "normal" pets have great difficulty let alone this.

I dont know how large of a cage this little girl needs now that its been determined that she'll probably be too aggressive to 'play with'. Chet had plans on moving her to a large parrot or ferret cage until he ran into trouble with her last spring. But when he saw she'd not be able to get out and play every day ... just a large parrot cage would not be enough. Thats when the reality of money and space for a huge cage set in. Then as more time ticked on ...... he exhausted and told me, "mom, I'm so sorry. This wasn't what I bargained for. I'm not cut out for a wild pet that will have nothing to do wtih me for the next 8 years." it was hard.

Yes please don't cave to this man, I think that you would have regretted this decision. You are looking for a home, not just anyone to take her off your hands. We are trying and thinking and pm'ing. I know that Tickle's Mom and myself are exhausing all means, and haven't taken a break from this computer since we saw your post this afternoon... For anyone new to Chipmunks: with the cage larger is always better, Chipmunks are really active animals and need space to run and climb especially if not given access out of the cage every day. If the cage is not large enough they can develop steriotypical behaviour which is like a repeative somersaulting.

I would say minium size is 5 foot high by 3 1/2 foot width and length so i would guess same as a Flyer. I have one in a 6 foot high cage and she uses all the space

Dothan is 670 miles from Houston, so it is going to require multiple carriers to complete that route.

As an alternate route, wolfysluv could also transport from Chattanooga to Birmingham (only 150 miles), which also moves the chippy closer to Muffin. That might open up more possibilities.

I may not be monitoring this thread regularly going forward. If anybody needs me, send me a PM.

It is so great, the way everyone is trying to get Flower down here. I am about 25 miles above Beaumont, TX., and about 100 miles east of Houston....pretty much in the middle of nowhere. :D

I just want Flower to get a good home where she can be as anti-social as she wants to be - I don't care if it's here with me, or with someone else that can provide what she needs. I can give her a home where she can be in a large, outdoor cage where she can dig and climb to her heart's content, with no people bothering her, for the rest of her life.

My outdoor cages average around 4'X8'X7' high. Down here in southeast Texas, rocks do not exist except in landscaping stores. :D But what we DO have is lots of trees, so she would have a few rocks and as big of a woodpile as she wants. All of my cages have concrete patio paver floors in them, but I can throw in a couple of feet of dirt on top of it for digging. All I can do is promise that I will give her the best care I can, regular balanced meals, and plenty of places to make as many dens as she wants. And I will spend time every day admiring her and talking to her - I like chipmunks.

You are the perfect home and chipmama...just perfect! Now we just have to find members to help get her to you...Let me get some coffe into me, feed the squirrel kids, and see what's going on here this morning....
Thank you muffinsquirrel for opening up your home yet again....and Flower's home sounds just ideal!!! You're my hero....:Love_Icon

When I get to work at 8 am ET, we will work on getting her to you. Need to know how far you are willing to travel so Chet, my offer is still there if you want to drive and spend the night if needed. If MS drives no more than two hours towards you, where will that be? We can go from there with your traveling.....:Love_Icon

A better home could not be had....so happy this little girl WILL go to Muffin.

What's up w/the flyer? Does it need to get to Judy, too (I don't think she would have a problem taking it, if so. I hope I didn't speak out of turn, but I don't think she would mind. Oh Muffin......can you squeeze another flyer in???)

First of all, I am clueless as to distances but if I did this half-way right with Google maps, there is approx 600 miles between you. 300 each way for each person involved IF you were to do this yourselves, with help for gas, etc. Approx 4 hours each way.

Chet was going to drive approx 175 miles each way yesterday to get Flower to that other person.....

So, we need some ideas and some help on getting this Chattanooga Choo Choo headed out ASAP!!:thinking

MuffinSquirrel's offer is the very best option for Flower I have heard.
Let's please find a way to make this happen.

I can't offer to help with the drive, but I am happy to contribute to the cost of travel.

I will keep all fingers and toes crossed while I pray incessantly that this will come to fruition!!!

Throwing one more idea out there...
If anyone wants to look into 'pet transport' for any leg of the trip that remains open.
I know there are air and ground options.
I have never used any type of pet transport in my life, so I know nothing about cost or experience,
but it's worth a look and see if someone wants to Google it.

I just looked at what AS suggested too....if Chet can get to Birmingham, and we could find someone to take the leg from Birmingham to New Orleans, then New Orleans to MS. Just thinking here...I'm hoping after all of this stress, Chet needs a VACATION to Texas.....at least for the day or two:D

There have been offers from Atlantasquirrelgirl...

Its e wolfy this time. Just poppin in to catch up. I just saw Chet saying that there is a remote possibility of him making the whole drive. As his mother I am fearful of this. He is so young and he'd be driving days with no other driver. Not safe, ya know? Another issue? This boy is stepping up, but not telling you how he is financially. He litterally has nothing to his name. His bank account is chronically just in the tens of dollars just to give you an idea and for you to know what he is sacraficing and how much he cares. "If" he were to drive the whole way and did get the time off? Guys he'd need money for some gas and he'd need total money for hotel stays.

I'm just stepping in realistcally, because Chet is a very "special" boy. I'm not speaking as just his mom either. Any one who has met him can tell you this and what he's done for his family and others quite literally his entire life. An example is he actually helped raise an autistic brother while his dad worked 70 hrs to make ends meet while I was in (this is horribly embarrassing) a mental hospital for a while for a nervous breakdown. It left me handicapped.

He'll do anything for an animal. It's an okay idea for him to drive ... But only if he takes his time and has the money. I'm sorry to be here and point out some negatives in all of this.

Stepping back out and letting chet come back in now (yikes wait til he see's this post lol)...

Okie dokie! :D
Just putting it into context is all and after this, I'm in the background. If done right actually, it would be a fun thing for him to meet Muffin and the critters!

It's just that I know he's a people pleaser and being young, you know, sometimes young people can put themselves into predicaments. I didnt want him driving days by himself with no relief driver and I know he hasn't enough money for all the gas on top of hotel stays.

He ended up spending nearly 800 dollars getting flower just from Illinois (he completely under estimated the money needed. He ran out on the road, had to borrow from us while there (thank god we had some). He accidently overdrew. Well he wanst online banking and back then banks "convienently" take their good time sending out notices ... so one fee piled up on another. It was outrageous. I was so lucky the bank was nice and we had no past incidents of that magnatude and I could talk much of those charges down for him. Of course I couldnt' tell them it was all over a chipmunk. LMAO. Wouldn't you have LOVED to see the face on that bank president had I done that? Omg, just way too funny to think about. :rotfl

Look, a lot of people are trying their hardest to do the right thing for Flower. Not to sound mean, but myself and Tickle's Mom have worked on this so hard with phone calls and pm's flying all over the place...hours upon hours. Do not step into the background and let everyone else figure this out. You felt uneasy about Flower going to this person yesterday, we got involved to help with what you wanted, which was a great home for Flower. Help is needed here....don't just drop this in everyone else's lap and fade away...
What do you want us to do, and what are you willing to do? How much driving can be done on your part, how much money are you willing to chip in? We still don't know which way this is going and I personally think the ball is in your court with a lot of this...Help us to figure this out!!!

Geez you totally have the wrong idea about what I said here! And I really put some effort into what I wrote so you wouldnt. Read what I said again. All I said is that someone can't drive a huge amount of hours in one day (15-20). All I said is given that he has to be careful being alone, it will take hotel stays since they dont let you nap on the road. All I said is he doesnt have all of the money for gas AND stays. And that he is is young will do ANYTHIG for people and animals. Read it again. Please. I was staying out of it cause this is his responsibility but just added to the context of things and some thoughts. And what he does is his own business as an adult. I was just making sure that he didn't feel pressured into doing more than what is safe. Period. That's it. Did I say I would interfere and "stop" him? No. Did I say that I was hesitant to let chet do the right thing, you all help us and interfere with your incredible mind boggling generosity? NO. You all didn't sleep. Neither did we. Thats why we didn't get up until late and get on board. I see that you got less as you all were up early and working so hard on this. I didn't mean to stir emotions. Lack of sleep leads to misunderstandings and high emotions. And seriously .. you did read way too much into what I said. That said ... Please accept my deep deep DEEP apologies. Okay? I feel HORRIBLE that I upset you in any way shape or form. I'm so sorry. I'll not post again. It's up to Chet now. The ball is in his court. It ALWAYS has been.

Chets already stressed and mad at me for stepping in, researching this guy and asking advice that led to changing his mind. Now he's going to be upset at me for upsetting you. I'm really sorry Chet. You're my hero. You were the day you were born and saved us from that fire. You've always been a man, way before you needed to be. I love you.

Can I just say that I know a lot of animal communities, and I am floored at the speed and dedication of this one? Just had to say that. Its incredible.

If I misread that you will step into the background, I am sorry. We need both of you here to let us know what you are willing to do. We are so close to actually doing something, I want both of you involved in this. Chet can say things that he wants to do, and like his mom, you want to protect him and rightly so...but that leaves us with not knowing what will be allowed etc. We are not familiar with where you live with the offers made to help with transport, I don't know if that is convenient for you...we are trying to all work this out...and we need everyone, you as his mom and Chet, that's all I meant by that...:)
And we have no idea money wise what we are talking about...we can get a train together perhaps, or Chet if can do it alone. How much gas, how many nights staying over...I just have no idea and would like input with that....:dono
We will work together....we just need input and what you are willing to do...then we can go from there.

I'm sorry it wasn't clear, but I've not talked a lot so as to let you all make the decisions amongst yourselves and with chet. I'm not the one having to drive or give money so I have no right to request a thing or impose.you are the sweeties who have stepped up, so do things at YOUR convienience. :). That's where I'm coming from. My message was misunderstood. But I'm making all of that clear now. I thought chet had made it clear he'd drive 400 miles no matter what and he'd consider much more ... I saw he'd not close any doors to all the way with stops and if he can afford it. So,other than that 'm not sure why anyone would think either of us have expectaions or would request even more than what anyone wants to do.Sorry if it sounded that way. Cause that's not the way it is. Whatever u guys can offer ... We'll see if Chet can swing it with what ever help is offered. I can't speak for him in that regard,

Well now, I see a lot has transpired in the last hour. Okay, I woke up MS earlier today - OOPS - so, just thinking out loud here.

Chet heads out with flyer (if going) and Flower. If he needs to spend the night, okay. If he meets up with Skul, it cuts the trip down considerably - so, can he "crash" (sorry mama) at MS for the night if he goes all the way? Is that even an option? Does he just meet up with Skul......again, if he feels he needs to rest to be safe, fine. If meeting up with Skul cuts out that many miles.....it's definitely something to think about. Chet still has to find out from his boss how much time he can take off so that also will come into play. Bottom line....a home for Flower and flyer and safety for Chet.

I didn't rob the bank I was just at, but it DID get robbed while I was in the drive thru!!!!:sanp3

I will, for one – I may be off line here and there (woo hoo, 12-24 inches of snow in IL coming) but I can do it sometime today/tomorrow.

If you don’t have one – sign up, all you need is a bank account, go to their website it’s easy.

I did hear back from the critter rescue in Florida that I contacted.
They left a message that they could take Flower.
They have other white Chipmunks in their care permanently.
I know there is a lot of planning going on to get Flower to TX which sounds like a wonderful place to go.
If that does not pan out here is your Plan B, another wonderful place to go!

Wolfy, I am going to PM you the details on this place.

OK - I'm finally here. Geez, the trouble a gal can cause just because she decides to sleep in! You don't understand - I'm old old old and need all of the beauty sleep I can get! :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl

Of course the flyer is welcome - Butter, isn't it? I've got room for just about anything that boards the train! (Please, no rats, possums, or snakes. Or anything bigger than I am!) :D

It's great to see everything finally coming together. In my younger days, I would have just driven up there to get her, and it gripes me that I can't still do that. Getting old is hell! (But on the other hand, I qualify for 20% off on Wednesdays at Goodwill!):D I'm looking forward to them getting here - more animals to spoil rotten!

Gotta go wrap pipes, etc, in preperation for the weather tonight. The weatherman even went out on a limb and mentioned the "S" word. Luckily, snow down here means maybe an inch if we're lucky, and then it's all gone in 24 hours. If the next day is sunny, we will put the top down on the convertible, turn the heater on full blast, and drive around looking at the snow! Gee, winter's rough down here in southeast Texas!:rotfl I just don't see what all the fuss is about snow up there in yankee land!:dono

Hey everyone. Chet got caught out for several hours. He ran out to help friends of ours with transportation, etc. He said he's still wrapping it all up. He hopes to be home shortly to check in. When he walks in he'll read everything, set up a paypal (everyone should have one anyway, if doesnt' already), and talk over the decisions. I feel like something will be solved tonight, doncha think? Well other than him requesting so much time off work when he's already done it twice for Flower (and those situations didn't work out as you know). Look forward to whats about to unfold.
The florida option has me just tickled to death. This is more than what we could have hoped for. Two choices. I told Chet and he fell silent. I asked whats wrong, omg everything is awesome. Like I said, he cant' hurt a fly and he said he worries about hurting anyones feelings, stepping on toes, etc, after all of this effort if it does come down to a choice and not down to only being able to do one of the two options. I think he's just overwhelmed a bit. Either way he'll make a great decision now. I have no doubt.

And um, Psychotic Flower. Buttercup? The devil squirrel is called "Buttercup"?? Are you kidding me? If i weren't so stressed and upset, I'd fall off the chair laughing. Yah Flower is a heck of a name for a 6 foot tall chipmunk ... but at least she was named because of her beautiful appearance. LOL. "Buttercup". omg.

Now with time not being so urgent, Chet and yourself have time to mull over the best choice for Flower...without the urgency looming over you like it was yesterday. Not that you want to drag this on, I'm sure you are both stressed by this...it's a huge decision, but you don't have some person knocking at your door looking for Flower, so you can breath a little....:Love_Icon :grouphug :Love_Icon

Now that the other person is not involved...there is no rush, so this can be on your timeline I believe. I believe Atlanta is only a 6 hour drive it will defiantly be a lot easier on Flower and Buttercup. And I was going to give wolfysluv some money for gas. Does the place that Buttercup is going to have other flying squirrels too? What kind of cages do they got? Its not one of those rescues that cram animals in a tiny cage is it? :dono Do they have a ton of other animals that they have to divide their attention between? Buttercup is a pet not a wild animal and I would like for the place that she goes to treat her as an individual pet...

I would like more info on them.

Another possibility is that I still carry them with me to Dothan, and if there's anybody near Tallahassee that can come get them Sunday evening. Tallahassee is about 96 miles from Dothan, AL, which puts them a lot closer to Jax.

Still to Chattanooga - what did you find out? If no one comes thru, I will have to drive to Atlanta at this point. We still have some hope others will come on board :thumbsup I have two Alzheimer moms to take care of so I am arranging for a day sitter right now to be on stand by. :D
