trixi is 10wks old and 35g. She was aspirated 48 hrs ago. Shes developed clicking, and open mouth(no snots). I have a vet who will treat her if no one else will, which is the case here in mass. The vet rehabs squirrels and is familiar with baytril, but says she doesn't know a dosage. Please help.

I just found this....
Wild Mammal Babies doses it at 10mg/kg .04 cc for 100 grams.
Willowbrooks says 2.5-15/kg but has this caution:
"Young animals during rapid growth phase may suffer articular cartilage damage."
I'd hold off if at all possible and get Sulfatrim. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Nancy I love ya but will vouch for Baytril as the BEST quick cure for pneumonia that is already apparent, and obvously critical.
The caution about cartilage damage is because GREAT DANE breeders did a study about Great Dane pups who were on Baytril for 30+ days and more. Not exactly comparable to giving a 1-lb squirrel baytril for 3-4 days. :) :peace

You don't think that Great Danes and squirrels are comparable....:dono :rotfl

This may not be appropriate due to the emergency currently at hand, but Great Danes & Squirrels...
...both are available in gray
...both are available in black
...both may have white bellies
...both have long tails
...both have very kissable faces
...both are love monsters
...both have fur
...both have brown eyes
...both have huge feet
comparable?
sorry, just my odd sense of humor, most likely posted inappropriately. :dono :thinking

I'm not sure but it seems there is some confusion [off and on on the board] about the fluoroquinolone class of AB's, of which baytril and cipro are both members.
The joint/articular side effects are class related and possible in immature animals. Studies have shown this in more than one different animal models with different fluoroquinolones [there are many]. Because of this possibility, side effects for each drug have to include studies done on that drug.
Every drug is studied with major pivotal trials and all side effects are captured. Even nutty ones. These become part of the drugs label. Often listed as greater than 1% or greater than 5% or greater than placebo. Sometimes the rate of say headache is higher with those in the placebo arm, because there is bias created by the very aspect of being in a trial. Nothing is perfect.
I am not saying that the articular damages seen in fluoroquinolone studies are coincidence. They occurred. But as with all medications [and treatments], the benefits have to outweigh the risks.
When looking at a side effect, you would have to look at the doses and the duration and make a decision based on benefits over risks.
A short term course of a std dose of fluoroquinolone is highly highly unlikely to do any articular damage in an immature animal. The benefits outweigh any possible risk.

@ 22.7mg/ml you would administer .02 every 12 hours for a 35g squirrel

Just got back from the vet. He was the third vet that told me sorry but i shouldn't own an illegal pet. Dieing or not. Luckily, i wouldnt take no for an answer and his assistant made some calls. They have been added to the legal list recently. The vet came back and said hes no expert but will look at him. He said she looks good for having aspiration pnuemonia, and put her on tribrissen. .08ml 2x a day 10days.

OK tribrissen is comparable to bactrim and sulfatrim -- good stuff. :thumbsup

when giving antibiotics
always support the digestive system with active culture found in BeneBac, yogurt, kefir or other probiotic products.
Squirrels have a short fermenting hind gut that helps them to digest. Antibiotics disturb this balance and MAY cause diarrhea or loose stools.
Benebac packets or tubes can be purchased at any pet store. Kefir comes in a pint bottle in the dairy case at the grocery store.
