I found my little Shaq dead on Monday afternoon, and I really have no idea what happened. He was about a year and a half, so it's not age-related. He was perfectly fine just the night before.

I posted over a year ago when he had a calcium deficiency, but since then his diet was adjusted and always monitored closely. He hadn't been acting any differently lately, he was as active and vocal as always, and his coat was still glossy.

When I saw his cage, I noticed that a lot of his bedding was thrown out of his little box, and instead was on the floor of the cage. Does this mean he could have gotten a fever or something? His water was also empty, but is it even possible to dehydrate to the point of death overnight?

The only thing I can think that was different is that I got him a new cage recently. However, even that is the same brand/materials as his old cage, and he's been in it for a few weeks. He looked quite peaceful when I found him, so I assume he had some disease with no symptoms. I don't know much about flying squirrel diseases, but there are no apparent injuries and again, he looked very peaceful.

Can anyone possibly explain what happened? Could he have just been sick for a while without acting it? I never expected that night would be the last time I'd be able to play with him, I'm still so shocked over it. Any possible explanations would be so appreciated. Thanks very much.

I wish I could give you answer. That's awful that his death is a mystery. Maybe he didn't want you to see him suffer so he hid how he was feeling. Prey animals are great at that.
I'm so sorry for your loss. :grouphug :Love_Icon :grouphug

Look for spiders. The bedding on the ground means something I don't want to tell you. He may have been bitten and stuggled with the poison during the night. Look closely but be carefull.

I'm so very sorry to hear of your little Shaq's death :sad I know how devastated you must be. Beyond the sorrow you must think of this little angel that you have watching over you now. You took great care of this baby and I'm sure shaq is at the Bridge waiting for you now. At peace and free of all pain.

R.I.P. sweet baby Shaq. You will be missed, you are still loved.

OMGosh, that is terrible! What a shock to have your baby fine one minute and gone the next. I'm SO very sorry for your loss. A spider with poison certainly seems to make sense. Rest in peace sweet little Shaq :grouphug

Thanks to everyone for your kind words.

I had also thought that it might have been a spider bite, since our old house gets spiders in the winter sometimes, I've even seen a few around here that are dangerous for humans. There are a few reasons now that I think that's not what happened... I had his cage in an area where we usually do NOT see spiders; I didn't see one while I was cleaning out his cage; and he didn't have any obvious marks on his body. I know spider bites can be small, but the dangerous spiders I've seen in my house are brown recluse spiders, and a bite from one of those would be VERY obvious (flesh-eating toxins). I'm not sure if wolf spiders' bites are deadly for squirrels, and I know a black widow's bite would have been small, but I have never in my life seen one--let alone in my own house.

Again, I thank all of you for your kind words. It's been a tough week, but I know that I took good care of him, and that whatever happened, I probably could not have prevented. It's so sad that he's gone, but I can't dwell on what could have happened. I'm just glad that I got to have him, and I'm glad that the last time I was with him, he was happy and squeaky- because that's how I want to remember him.

Thank you all very much, and I wish many more happy years for you and all of your little ones.
