So I had 2 little guys that I found inside my truck in the engine compartment mom had made a nest and there were 2 little babies inside both pinkies. I tried to get mom to take them back by removing the nest and and placing it close to the truck she never came... So I decided to take care of them, the rehabber I contacted couldn't take them but gave me some esbilac and told me how to do everything... Well I think that the make I had got Phenomia... He lost weight like crazy refused to eat and eventually didnt make it. However my little girl was healthy as could be, but now its been 2 days since he passed and she is starting to show the same signs he did... seems to be losing weight I can see her ribs, she seems to be very restless and still moves around alot but seems to be getting weaker... she used to pull away from me during feeding and squirm now she just kinda lays there and moves her front feet... She is still eating however just not as much as she used to. I just now learned that esbilac isnt good... Also I was told to microwave the formula so i have been doing that as well... I need to know what to do I orderend the fow valley formula and it should be here tuesday what can I do to make sure she stays alive untill then? I have been feeding her like every 3-4 hours about 1/2 cc to 3/4 cc of the esbilac 1 part formula 2 parts water. help I dont want to lose her!

Oh and I have her in a shoe box with a heating pad on the bottom, covered by a dish towel, and another towel that lays over half of the box she seems to like to craw underneath it. She is also getting like really dry skin, starting to get peach fuzz all over and has little dandruff flakes sorta. Im guessing shes barely 2 weeks old maybe closer to 3. I need help because I really don't want to lose her.. Should I try to give her some unflavored pedialyte? I just need some tips... and if she does have phenomia what do i do?

drewposi

She also poops alot!!! golden brownish sometimes a little yellow and whitish. but usually after I feed I stimulater her to pee and she does but usually doesn't poop for a few more mins then will continue to until i feed her next. He box gets covered everyday lol I guess thats a good thing from what I have been reading.. Just don't know what to do for her cracking noise... is the fact that she is still eating good? should I use a different mix? should I give her some pedialyte? please somebody help lol! im not that desperate but I just don't want her to die like her little brother.http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/drewposi/photo.jpg

You need to get her out of the cardboard box. Do you have a sterilite container or critter keeper, that would be a better choice. Can you hear her clicking when she breathes? She will need ab's. Where are you in FL, hopefully someone is close enough to help. Do you have a vet you can take her to? If she is that ill, she needs to get to one now!

drewposi

She only clicks when Im feeding her not just breathing.. and I dont have anything else really other than some tupperware clear plastic... she just got like this this morning... doesn't seem to be too sick but shes losing weight....

Do you have her on a heating pad?

Sarabi
01-14-2011, 02:39 PM
Do you have a rehabber close that can help you? You may need some antibiotics. She looks to be dehydrated, how often and how much is she eating? how are you mixing the formula?

drewposi

I dont know how to find one... the guy I knew was a family friend that rehabbed them however he isnt licensed... im having trouble finding a list or something to find one.

And yes shes on a heating pad.

This sounds like aspiration phnemonia. This occurs when babies inhale formula, like when we choke on a drink or laugh. Often you will see a little milk come out around her nose. She needs to be fed EXTREMLY SLOW!! Could you post a picture of her chest? If you can see white in the lung it is deffinatly from asperation. The pnemonia is caused by the liquid sitting in her lung and growing bacteria.

In the picture it looks as though she may be begining to show signs of failure to thrive. This could be because her little body is working so hard to fight the infection and now she isn't absorbing all the nutrients.

Her poop should be yellow not white but solid (not like a brick) and not loose.

If you have already been in contact with another rehabber contact her again I. Don't know why she would not help with this knowing the squirrel is in danger.

We really want to help here but we have to have some Particulars, Can you call your local Fish & Wildlife if your uncomfortable giving info here. There is more than 1 rehabber in your area and they can give you names and numbers and the rehabbers can help with vet/meds. It sounds pretty serious and she looks like she needs

immediate attention. Yes Jackie would help most definite. Calling now...

Thanks Sarabi...please keep us informed. This little one will never make it until Monday, time is of the essence you can tell by the picture....she's in bad shape.
Thank you too drewposi for finding the help that she needs. These little ones can be hard enough when they are in good shape, but the shape she is in she needs somebody with all of the experience and equipment, and even then....things go downhill so terribly fast. Thank you for doing the right thing and for finding help for her...:bowdown :Love_Icon

I understand but you do not want to keep her if it risks her life. I am new to this group and I unstand they welcome pet owners however I personaly feel that if she was wild she belongs wild unless she is unreleaseable. It would be like keeping your children and locking them up because you always wanted one, never allowing them experience the freedom they deserve.

I think if you could do the care after weaning and before total release and then do the release (slow release where the animal sticks around for shelter and food until she finds her own sources) you and your kids would gain a truly wonderful experience. And what better experience than to let go of something that is not truly yours?

It would be so cool if you could set up a relationship with a rehaber and do some slow~releases. That's what got me hooked on my racoons.

As far as her lung looking white is sounds like aspiration. If you do not get in contact with some help soon I think (because of the dehydration/ malnurishment) you should
1)stop formula
2)start with hydration fluids
3)start with a small amount of nutrical for energy.

Wow great! You got results while I was typing! LOL...

Drewposi-- You did what is SO hard to do--you offered to give this little one up, even though you had already fallen in love with her, in order to get her the care she needs. You are her angel and obviously have a big heart! :Love_Icon I hope she gets better and you get to see her again and again.

FYI, I heard that the little girl is doing well. Jeff said she is really skinny but otherwise in good shape. She eats good and will be going to Karen today, she will eventually have some cage mates as Karen has 3 others her age. They will be put together when she recovers 100%...:thumbsup
Jeff also started her on sulfatrim just in case she has something going on in her system. Hang in there little one....sounds like you are doing great!

Good job on seeking help when needed. AND :thumbsup to TSB peeps AGAIN!

I know it's heart-wrenching to hand your baby over to someone else, but when you have done absolutely everything you can (and you DID) and she still was not thriving, it's really the only option. Many people on TSB (including me) have had to do that at one time or another. It truly is a gift of love to do so :Love_Icon .

Hopefully you will soon see pictures posted of a chubby Beyonce in a warm, happy pile of step-siblings! I'm so sorry about her brother; they really do go fast when they are so tiny.

I only popped in just now and saw little Beyonce's thread...I am in Lutz and can usually at least help with transportation and/or supplies. I'm glad to hear that you will now have supplies on hand just in case!
