I have a Red Fox Squirrel named Mr.Cracker Nuts he is now 5 years old. Lately I have noticed he is making noises I never heard before. We have taken care of him since he was 2 weeks old. Anyways hes been making a low high pitch cry or whine when hes sleeping. Hes also breathing heavily and it sounds like one of his nostrils are closed. Hes good with his vitamins and his diet plus we know whats not good for squirrels. Please Help hes my little baby and I would hate for anything bad to happen to him, Thank You.

:Welcome Rose ninja and Mr Cracker Nuts..........
Sounds to me like your boy has a respiratory problem. Couple of questions. Do you have a vet that will see him??? If not do you have any antibiotics???
Do you have a vaporizer? If not you can steam a bathroom to alleviate some of his breathing.
A rehabber should be along soon.

First of all, welcome to TSB. You've come to the right place for help. Everyone here has experience and can be helpful. I also believe that you should try some kind of vaporizer or steam. I would try antibiotics in case it is pnemonia or respiratory infection. It is scary when they are sick and you don't know what to do. Hang in there. Calvary is on it's way. Keep him comfortable and hydrated if he's not eating. You're not alone!:Welcome

when breathing is affected, I would ck for anything lodged in nose, smell his breath and give a good visual ck of his teeth...
If a sq has had trauma to the face, teeth can be impacted , resulting in possible odontomas. If an abcess, you will smell foul infection.
If more respitory related, like lildukes suggested, you can use a vaporizer or steamy bathroom. However steam it first, sqs do not like the sound of running water.
Not sure how a 5y/o would get pnuemonia unless debilitated.
If you are feeding acorns or nuts/naturals from outside, make sure they are not moldy. TSB has had many incidents involving aflatoxins and mycoplasmas lately.
How are poops and pees?
Is urine normal? appetite?
Do you have a vet?
If you can post a pic, that will help expedite info for the rehabbers.
Please list diet and history also.
good luck

Take a look at the thread called "avocado help" for one of these recent problems. It is recommended that you act swiftly. Can you get vet help? Or antibiotics? Vet is better because afflatoxins and mycoplasms seem to be very stubborn infections. X-ray would show whether he has any obstructions from growths in his head.

Thanks everyone for the help. I got a vaporizer and he seems to be breathing much better now. I stayed up all night with him making sure he was doing better. Hes a great red fox squirrel and my best friend. As for his eating, drinking and bathroom habits they are all normal. I have looked at his teeth as well and they seem to look the same as always. Today he even got up to playing with his toys. Thanks again everyone I was really concerned! :Love_Icon

Welcome Rose Ninja! This is the place for awesome help and support. I just went through hell and back with my squirrels (I did had 5 in rehab) and with out the TLC of the TSB I would have thrown in the towel and gave up. I learned how to do subQ fluids and natural medicines all right here. Along with awesome Prayers! So from 2ndHRR I'm sending you healing prayers and here's to a good nights sleep for all.
