There has been a some discussion on the superworms.
Main concern seems to be that hormones are used to get them that big.
Whether that's bad, I really don't know.
We do not feed them to ours.

Have you considered feeding chicken instead?

I got this chart off Exoticnutrition.com.

I think super worms are a unique species - even their care is different *if you have ever refrigerated them like the mealworms and found them all dead, you know that already!

The Phoenix worms are what we call waxworms.

Thank you for posting "where" you got this. I've been killing myself trying to find a place that I could order wax worms from to keep from driving 19 miles (one way) to Pet Smart to buy them! I think I'll be ordering online from now on. :D

Skul, you are thinking of "Mighty Mealies", superworms are something totally different (and those suckers BITE!)

You can get them here, too:

Bev, I used to order mealworms by the thousand lot when I was rehabbing the FLOCKS of barn swallows from the place I used to board my horse. Their prices are good and their service was as well, and the bugs I got were of much higher quality than what I could get at Petco. The squirrel food they advertise looks like crap to me, but their live stuff is pretty nice. Some attractive cages, too.

I killed 500 superworms in the fridge...:hissyfit :frustratedx
won't do that again!

lately, when chopping firewood, I have been finding...
THE WORLDS BIGGEST and ugliest GRUBS..omgosh they are revolting...
when the kids take the first bite from these white gross monsters with blue gray helmets, black yuck squirts out...I leave.

funny that I took a pic of them and this subject came up
{they are long gone this AM}...
I took it because they were sooo big,
all of these are bigger than most of my fingers...this is a big yogurt container. UGLY!:yuck

It was fun watching the flyers fight for them...
picture it...
wee little race cars hauling a big bad ass grub around...being chased by other desperate grub seeking minis!
No one shares.:nono
They love them!:surrender
PS...our releases and the local wilds, sit and wait for them...like vultures...even with the chainsaw crankin'!

Here is are two links to grubco, one for mighty mealies, the other for superworms. They don't 'say' they give em' hormones, but they do. (The beetles that come from mighties never 'have babies'.....wonder why that could be? Yeah, they give em' somethin' to get that big!)

There are pics with both. This is where I order my mealies (large, not mighties) from.

Oh, thanks Jackie, gonna have nightmares about them ugly suckers now!!! lol

I use to own sugar gliders and I feed super worms to them all the time and Max the grey squirrel we had for 6 months before he was returned to the wild ate them all the time and had no problem with them.... just make sure you use tweezers to give them to your squirrel as they do bite (and dont worry your squirrel will soon learn to bite the worms head off first to stop them from biting - my sugar gliders did).

And Yes.... Pappy is right - The Mighty Worms are the ones Skul is referring to that are fed hormones to get them so big - - - - - But "Super Worms" are a different species all together and are safe to feed to gliders, flyers, wild squirrels and adult bearded dragons for treats or as extra protein in their diets.

Many people prefer super worms over meal worms as they do not require refrigeration..... and they remain a worm much longer before they transform into a beetle bug.

Is there a way to make them more attractive to greys?
Everytime I offer chicken or mealies to our squirrels they look at me like I am trying to kill them.
Malli has taken to snorting at them...:shakehead

None of my greys (four) will touch either mealies or waxworms. Fonzi used to LOVE any kind of bug, but not Pinkie, so maybe it is just an individual thing (many people like pepperoni pizza, but I HATE IT! lol)

Don't know what to tell you about that

Every squirrel i've offered a mealie to has gobbled it up.

I placed my first order today! The $5.99 shipping is a small price to pay in order to avoid Destin traffic. Hurray!!!

I'm confused a little. Do you feed them live worms or the dead ones in a can or does it matter? My daughter raises mealworms(started as a class project) and feeds them oatmeal and apples.I don't know that they are nutritional for my grey.

I guess I'll try to feed Hammy some of her live mealworms. What about live crickets? I heard that they eat bugs in the wild such as crickets.
