WOW, this is such WONDERFUL news! Even hubby was asking me last night if I'd heard how Ginger was doing. At that point I hadn't had a chance to log on. I'm so happy to hear Ginger is making a comeback is doing great.
Mugz, can you please post what you recommended for dosages with the milk thistle and aloe, how they were administered and exactly what products (brands) were used so we all can learn from this terrible situation? That would be really helpful.
2HRR, sorry you had to travel in blizzard conditions. I'm so glad you made it safely to your desitination. Also wonderful news about Josie :jump
" Everything Busysqrl said ! " LiTerally, LOL ! I wanted to say how thrilled I am with the news, to be careful in the snow , and also to ask for the details on this milk thistle and aloe.Would like to get some to have on hand, don't have a WF , but 2 relatives I go visit have them where they live.
( I'd have to leave out the part about husband asking after Ginger though:shakehead My husband NEVER asks me anything about a squirrel, he knows I will not shut up about squirrels for hours:dono
Hope you're having a fun trip !:flash3

100-150mg/kg Milk Thistle dose rate
you need a weight and a drug concentration (mg/ml) to find the amount to give.
Aloe Juice...plain old Aloe fillet Juice 3-4 dropperfuls/day
There are a number of liver detox formulations on the market but I don't want to mess with that unless I know it will work and has already been recommended.

Thank you MM, and now I am about to look really stupid, but I will do it for the sake of a squirrel-sigh, what is Aloe fillet juice ( it sounds like a fish and I don't know what it is ) :dono

NO question is stupid and I have to say that I raised an eyebrow on that too :D
When we stop asking we stop learning
here's what I found in a quick search...cleaning and moving cages around 2day :/
How to process your own Aloe:
http://www.knowledgehound.com/khhow2s/how_to_juice_aloe.htm
and another site states...
The inner fillet part of the ring is where aloe vera contains its health benefits. Aloe vera whole leaf juices use the entire leaf. Manufacturers claim that the whole leaf contains more nutritional value. However, that is simply not true at all. The ring of the plant is more as a filler and most go under chemical removing process to get rid of potential pesticides, bacteria, and get rid of the yellow sap on the out of the ring which contain harmful anthraquinone glycosides. The yellow sap contains toxic laxative properties. What's even worse is that some aloe vera whole leaf juices don't even remove the yellow sap. The yellow sap known as aloe latex is very bitter and has very intense side effects. Side effects when used for a long period of time can potentially lead to death even!

Thanks Mugz! More questions (sorry), so are you saying the Milk Thistle is given per kg of squirrel weight? I'm terrible with weight conversions, any chance you can convert that to mgs per g of squirrel weight? What brand of Milk Thistle do you use? Is it liquid? I thought I read earlier in this thread it was 'flakes'? I assume what you have indicated above is a therapudic dose. What about for preventive purposes? Did I read you said 1 flake per day for a squirrel? Same with the Aloe Juice, what you have above is a therapudic dose?
THANK YOU! :grouphug

I didn't mention flakes.µ*¯
Okay I wanna know how Finnagin typed that speaking of flakes...weird :shakehead
1g=.001kg
so a 1 pound squirrel is 454g or .454kg
As far as prevention what are you preventing?
Aflatoxin poisoning?
Might do more harm than good
I don't know what the cumulative effects of Milk Thistle would be so I wouldn't do it.

Thanks Mugz. I really shouldn't have said 'prevention', what I meant was just for general good health and cleansing of the liver. I've heard that people take it just for liver support. It was also recommended to me for my dog when he got older and his liver values were starting to climb.
What brand do you use and what frequency is the dose administered?

I got the Gaia Herbs brand low alcohol for Nancy's Ginger.
It comes in a little dropper bottle.
Ginger gets two drops per day.
She could probably take a lot more but I didn't know how she would accept it.
Apparently it's yummy to her? yuk
There are capsules that you can purchase as well. The powder can be put into suspension and dosed that way too.
Ask your vet what give your dog

I'm thinking food grade Bentonite should be looked into as well for this as well.
It has some very interesting properties and essentially harmless when ingested.
It's clay
but a very interesting and useful clay
kind of like Koalin but different
Kaopectate...get it?

Hey Team TSB. Back home safe and sound along with Ginger and Bear. They are doing great ! Not 100% but with Formula, Nutrical, meds they are starting to eat on their own. Not a lot - but gaining weight and ACTIVE! Ginger was a nut at the Critter Sitters and wanted OUT OUT OUT! Both are happily in their cages napping. I know it will be a long road to 100% but we are well on our way. I did loose my Little Olive but thanks to Team TSB and Mugzeezma I still have my Ginger the Wondersquirrel and sweet toothless RK Bear. I have a story about acorns but I'll post that over in Alfatoxins later today. Also - I'll have to get the kids ready for their photo shoot tonight - but for now - off to work. Hugs to each and everyone of you from 2nd Hand Ranch & Rescue!!! And yes, Mugzi - I MUST come visit and see Willowbrook with you - I am stoked!

Thanks guys!!! I am happy too!!! I am happy that even though Little Olive died. I just happen to be sitting by her cage when she flopped out of her house and was dying. At least I was there holding her in her fleece blanket stroking her head. Ginger now is in her bookcase home (minus the nut stash and she is not happy) and is so mad at me she bit me when I was trying to give her formula. On the other hand, Bear - my wild squirrel hit by a car (you know the story) bottom teeth only, broken crooked jaw, torn ear, crooked spine and bent tail - well he is loving the TLC. He actually comes out of his nest for fruit, a nut or two and....get this....loves his formula/nutrical. Just like a baby - he sits on his haunches and drinks away 13 cc last time. He is finally for the 1st time in 2 years putting on weight! Now to try some Booballs. Its too funny seeing this beat up grey muzzle squirrel loving formula. He did this when he first came here too. Very cute. Yes photos are a must tomorrow. What a great ending and I wouldn't have survived without my TSB support group and prayer circle. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon
Yay, Ginger with a temper and Bear willingly gobbling up food. This is the best news ever!!!! I am sooooo looking forward to seeing their pictures tomorrow.

Here are the pics from this morning. Its so nice to have the pitter patter of little squirrel feet running around my office. Work time for me is play time for squirrels. Ginger is out most of the time when I am up here working, but the Juvies were out today too. Bear never wants to play but sits and sleeps. He always sleeps a lot - he's an odd squirrel. The Juvies share a cage with him as they race around - he'll just sit and watch. I think he's very old.
Note Bear's crooked jaw - and just bottom teeth - he's so sweet.
Look at Micheal's pure white tail. He's a foxxy with a white tail!!!

I know - its so cool Pure white tail on a foxxy. Yep he came that way - he actually was almost all white like some I've seen on TSB - but not white like a grey squirrel. Just frosted. Now he has an awesome pure white tail! He's a wild one. Both he and Katie are counting down days until spring and freedom - they can not wait!

Finnagin too.
Almost ran over his sister with my truck the other day. I didn't think to teach them about looking both ways before crossing the street!
All the Foxers here are flame glow orange...no white at all.
The grays (Mugzi's clan) are silvery, live down by the creek and are BIG. The grays that I have released are smaller and browner. Finnagin will be next.
My fear is that the Foxers will chase him down the road.
Do you have any other pix of Michael?
Of the nearly 100 squirrels I handled At Willowbrook only 1/4-1/3 were foxers and none were even remotely white like that.
what's their story?

Yes I have a few photos of him - on my phone is his 1st day here. I am always interested in the distribution of squirrels.
Geneseo IL has black, white and grey squirrels living along with foxers.
Ottawa IL has all Foxers (that's were Micheal is from)
Mendota IL Greys in all shades of brown and black
Princeton IL Only Foxers
Walnut IL Foxers.
I asked my DNR wildlife biologists and he said usually Foxers like an open timber and park setting while the greys like full timber - but I don't think that holds true.
I have a grey out here that has a white pinto spot on her head. Funny I release everybody here and they go their own way. The greys stay but there are only 1 or 2 foxxers. So much food behind my house and in rural areas - the squirrels never bother the feeders. I actually never ever had squirrels at my feeders until I started releasing - that's how much food there is here. Very light population for competition. I'll find some more photos -----now where were they......
PS the funny thing is here - the greys chase the foxers.

yipes!
A friend of mine was telling me about a pair of squirrels that fought to the death. He had to bury the loser.
I have never seen them aggressive towards one another.
There are get blacks up in Buffalo Grove.
And correct me if I'm wrong but there may be some pearly whites AND blacks in Argonne...you know where they have the big research facility?
White deer too... makes you wonder what they do there (actually I know...I worked under contact there ;))
When the sqkids are out in the release cage big ol' Ramsese and his main squeeze Chubby Cheeks that call my yard home run all over it and my grays run all over it on the inside following him.
When I take them out all sorts of squirrelies go in there.
It's like a giant squirrel trap!
I try to chase them out and they WOOF at me! Won't leave!

OMG OMG OMG
I am doing the happy dance! My old Ginger is 100% back to herself. Last night she got back in her routine. When I do my paperwork or practice guitar in my loft/office Ginger is set free for the night. She plays - bounces off the back of the chair, we play belly rub or tag (she is in love with my Brittany Cinnamon and they play too) then after a while she goes to her nest on the top of the bookcase for the night. Then in the morning when I go online to start my day (then I'm out in the field and she is in her cage) she came out for breakfast then stole all my pens. (I had stolen back when cleaning out nuts last week) she even found the ones in my purse. She has a passion for these blue ones with shiney clips I get from the State. She spent the morning rounding ALL of them up. From my desk, from the bookshelf cup, from my purse, even the one on the floor she spied. So we are 100%.
