Hi all,

i have a squirrel that is around 2 years old and this evening i've noticed that its right hand is swollen and limping around!

Please kindly advise what i should do to the hand!

Will it recover?

He seems pretty quiet today too..

Mine is a Plantain Squirrel and the red arrow part is the place where its swollen:

he probably sprained it while jumping around; this happens a lot and "should" clear up in 2-3 days. Swelling, however, is not a good sign -- do you have a vet who will see him? If it's a fracture he may need pain meds or even a cast.

What is his diet like? Sometimes if pet squirrels don't get the high calcium they need in their diet, they will have little fracture injuries like this...

Thank you for the reply!!

We are feeding him Esbilac milk (3 times a day), and fruits, nuts, veggies.

Is this diet sufficient?

No, we do not have vet in our country that is able to check on squirrels.

He is able to hold on to his food and chew and eat. (Is this able to determine if its a sprain or broken?)

Wow, he's 2 and he's on formula still? Well that's unusual but not a bad thing because he's getting his nutrients that way. If he's holding his food with that paw I will go out on a limb here and say it's probably just a sprain. Watch it closely...any continued swelling, hot temperature or sensitivity could be signs of something more serious. Good luck with him -- and hey, we LOVE pictures if you can post one.

thanks!

Yep, since this guy still drink formula milk, might as well continue to feed him that. Hopefully he will get all the nutrients he need!

How long will usually such sprains take to heal?

Thanks again for the quick reply, i felt so much assured now and finally can sleep tonight!

Sprains heal around 6weeks or more depending on how bad it is. Limit cage size and climbing so he does not stress it more. Give him a lot of attention and hugs.
Where are you?
