Last night I heard my 16 week-ish old squirrels screaming from their release cage on my back porch. I ran out and could not figure out who was wheezing so I brought them in. One of them appearantly fell and busted her nose on something.(Perhaps the bone in the bottom of the cage?) Her nose was bloody and her mouth looked a little bloodied as well. She is absolutely TERRIFIED of me picking her up to give her Clavamox so I mixed her dose with applesauce and I have left it in her cage. She has been seperated from her siblings and is on heat in a dark, quiet room. Her breathing seems a bit labored and I am worried that if I chase her down and grab her with gloves, she will simply expire...any advice? Thanks!

Thank you, Mugzeezma - I was just coming back to check on this. Hope she's okay!

If you're able to check her teeth, DO. She may have temporarily knocked them out of alignment and they will grow crooked if not gently moved back into alignment. (Their teeth are not fixed rigidly, like ours...they move.) Poor girl!

Hmmm...she attacks my hand whenever I reach for her. However, she has been eating apple wedges and kale. Would she be able to eat with her teeth knocked out of alignment? I'm just boggled about what to do...I would like to catch her and give her a total exam but I am worried because it is stressing her out so bad and her breathing gets really labored. I will be taking her to the vet if she does not improve. Unfortunately everything is closed for the holiday. Thanks everyone for your advice and help!

That's my fear as well ... that and a possible bone shard in the nasal cavity.
I laid piles of fall leaves on the floor of my release cage because mine are insane sometimes.
I'll have to get straw later on.
Until the weather breaks in the spring I will examine them daily so they are used to me. God forbid anyone else try to touch them though.

I think leaves would be a GREAT idea! I used to keep t-shirts and baby blankets in with them but I have one with bad allergies, so I took all of that out. (they have a ferret cube) I have just been having the worst.squirrel.luck.ever this year! I have been hands-off for awhile now to get them ready for release. The other babies are TOTAL babies but my poor, injured baby is fierce. I will most definately have her teeth looked at by a professional by tomorrow. I didn't even consider that she could have broken something! Her injury doesn't look too severe from the outside...it's mainly her breathing so hard that is bothering me.

That's the part that bothers me the most.
It may just be a hematoma (bruising) inside the sinus from the trauma.
I wish you could ice that little nose!
Watch for further swelling around the sinus. Also if you have any metacam that may help IF she need it.

Update~My little teeny tiny squirrel is doing GREAT! She rested a great deal for the past 2 days. I got a look at her teeth and they are totally straight! Her breathing sounds good and she is super anxious to rejoin her siblings! I knew things were getting better when I saw her eating a walnut this morning. Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. It is comforting to know there is someone out there who can help you when you need advice.

I'm glad nothing serious happened to her. These little guys are so amazing how they take a licking and keep on ticking....I watched a youngster drop from a limb 30' up and land in the middle of the street. HE laid there long enough to shake it off. Of course as soon as I came over to pick him up he jumped up and took off at light speed.
Considering their lifestyle, one would have to believe that they were made to withstand a certain amount of trauma/shock of falls. That's probably why squirrels are so tough!
