I was wondering if we could have a sticky for foods that are not healthy for squirrels. I like to try new things with Puck (Grey Squirrel) and he seems to enjoy a selection. I have been giving him; broccoli, squash, avocado, collard greens, turnip greens and carrots. (So far broccoli is his favorite) I don't want to give him anything that could make him ill or potentially be lethal. I am aware of the obvious ones like caffeine and chocolate, but I know there are more out there so if anyone would like to add to the list or start a new thread of foods not to give your squirrel (and what type) we could add to it and make it a sticky as a reference!

I do not feed eggplant or imported chestnuts!:peace
these are the two things that would appear safe and IMO are not.
I have had bad experiences with both!
Yes, see the sticky Legomom provided link for!

Also: a VERY basic rule of thumb to start with:
For indoor "pet" squirrels, or squirrels in long-term rehab situations, AVOID all the foods people normally put in squirrel feeders! That means:
NO: peanuts
sunflower seeds
corn
bird seed
Outside squirrels are free to eat wild foods that are nourishing, so junk foods won't really hurt them., Your 'captive' squirrel only gets what you give him, so don't give him junk. :nono

I do very (although rarely) give a peanut or a couple sunflower seeds as a treat (not every day, maybe once a week). My guys eat very well, lots of veggies, rodent block every day. They still eat FV every day (and they are 16 weeks old), as well as full fat yogurt. They are not big on fruits, but thats ok. They eat mushrooms every day, as well. I also pull maple branches, pine cones, and branches from the bushes in my yard (we don't use pesticides), which I always see my wilds snacking on. They get acorns, pecans in shell, hickory nuts, almonds (after they eat the blocks, formula and veggies!) They also seem to really like broccoli, as well. I also keep cuttlebone, deer antlers, and marrow bones in their cage, which the all love to chew on.
