I found another baby squirrel yesterday, I saw it fall out of the tree, and she fell right on the concrete, a bloody nose and possibly a broken leg. Now after I TRY feeding her, she starts having seizures. I'm thinking there may have been some head injury in the fall and that's causing it.... How do I help her? :( ---She's about 5 or 6 weeks

Dexamethasone, It's a steroid and has the best result if given within the first 24 hrs.

do you have a vet that you use? any vet will have the dex and know how to dose accordingly...
as of righht now, the only rehabber in orlando is Tori and I have not been able to get ahold of her lately...but I will try again...
if you have vet, go now before they close...
take baby in a warn container with rice buddy or hot wtaer filled rubber gloves or coke bottle wrapped in a tshirt to not burn the baby or roll on the baby...I am in Tampa...my vet will close soon and I only have oral prednisone here...but if that's all we got, come on! I will do all I can.
We can go another avenue also...metacam, but not in conjunction with steroids, no no, never together. One is NSAID and the other is not...do you know anyone with a painfully sick dog? Rabbit or rat?that may have metacam?
seizures are bad indication of super bad head trauma...not good prognosis I am afraid, but I have seen many live...it is so worth trying:grouphug
will try tori again, now!

She's doing a lot better now... The vets were no help... I just fed her a few drops of Karo syrup and some pedialyte.. maybe her sugar level was just low. She's acting totally normal now... thank you for all your help I'll keep you updated

Corey can you describe the seizures for me? Sometimes baby squirrels exhibit what are called'feeding seizures', but they are nothing serious at all.....

She starts kind of like twitching her head and tries to spin her body and is just shaking all over. I've raised 5 squirrels and never seen any of them do this... She only just started today.

OK that would not be a feeding seizure....just exploring all angles. I do hope you can get her the dex shot because it may ward off any head trauma effects she's suffering. Poor little one!

would these seizures be because of low blood sugar though? not just head trauma?

Does she appear dehydrated? Thin?
was she cold when you picked her up?
Is there any blood in her ears?
Did she urinate or defecate when she seized?

awe, I sure hope the little is going to be ok...
if you want to come to Tampa..I can give pred or metacam...
if tommorrow, saturday, to see my vet, you would need to be here early...would that be within the 24 hour range?
sugar will always give a boost...but if it is truly head trauma, it is not going to help except for that, low blood sugar.:shakehead
In my humble uneducated opinion...I would chose metacam over dex anyways...
I prefer the use of dex for spinal trauma, but I have vets to do the major decision making> Amen.
I am here if needed...I do go to the farmers market early saturday morning, so would need to know tonight...I can go to the market before daybreak.
I am going to see this little squirrel tommorow.... am back in action after my being out of touch a few months....send me the squirrels lol :)

I'm heading over there today to see Tori. She has the dex shot. Thank you though! Does the baby still need it if she's stopped having seizures?

It wouldn't hurt, better to be safe than sorry. She might not be done having seizures. Head trauma it's hard to tell.
Saw baby she looks good...hydration great...mentation a little sluggish maybe. But good weight and healthy looking, possible minor fracture in her left wrist but she should adapt. I gave her a dose of dex just to be safe and they have my number if she changes in any way. Looks like they are doing a good job with her:)

Baby update! :) she's doing so much better. I named her Aila, which means strong :) she had one minor seizure yesterday after the medicine, but that's all. She's very active and started eating banana last night. Today she is experiencing some aggression.. I believe because of the dex shot.. but otherwise she is excellent :D

It is past the steroid helping time...IMO.
I would feed the best most nutritious food/diet from here out.
Good health is healing ...some damage can take days weeks months to see when head trauma is involved.
Best to keep your sweet sq in a low cage where she cannot fall and a very padded cage bottom. I would keep her on formula and order HHBs. I would feed from the healthy sq diet!

Time will tell how serious her trauma was and if she can recouperate enough to be released, many do just fine.:thumbsup
Thank you for doing all you are!
