Well last night I finally broke down and gave the Knuck-Nuks nuts in the shell again.
They haven't had any since Clivey died on us.
They were in heaven...I was hanging out the kitchen window waiting for someone have seizures or something...:shakehead
Great squammy needs therapy!:shakehead
Still haven't given them walnuts again yet...

Small consolation.... but at least it is rare that you will have something like that happen :/

These nuts are from the US...and the outside of the shells is really clean...whereas the ones we were feeding still had a bit of "junk" from the casing.
You should have seen hubby and I...it was kind of sad... lol
the squirrels were so wierded out they climbed up to the top of the cage where we couldn't watch them! :D
They were so happy!
I started giving Gordo a bit of yogurt in the mornings with his booballs...we bake our booballs so I used a syringe to fill the booball...the look on his face was precious! He looked like he had won the lottery! :D
Malli and Webby don't care for yogurt...but Gordo is spastic about it...we were trying to give it to him on a spoon...THAT was a freaking mess!
The syringe wasn't moving fast enough and became a casualty to burrbel teeth...so the booball method seems to work best! :D:rotfl

Let me get this straight - you are injecting yogurt into his boo balls? Like a jelly donut? Wow, good thing you aren't spoiling them! Don't you worry - cream-filled boo balls are JUST what they need to prepare for a life in the trees. That and fleece...:rotfl :rotfl :rotfl
I think you are pretty safe with commercial hard shell nuts - I always store mine in the fridge (for short term) or the freezer. The Diamond Nuts are in the stores now - you want to hit them hard RIGHT after Christmas and you can usually buy them pretty cheaply.

Hey now!
Yogurt filled Booballs could happen in the wild...OK...mostly in moms backyard! :D
Besides...I said I was trying to be more "hands off"...NEVER claimed I wasn't spoiling them! :D
I have only been cleaning their cage every third day...which is driving me nuts...<eye twitch> I am a little OCD where my animals are concerned...I could live in destruction quite happily...but I freak out if our fuzzies aren't clean! :D
So today while I cleaned they ran on me a bit, but mostly hung out on the top of the nestbox and just watched me...so that is an improvement!
BTW-What's the best way to put a bit of weight on a squirrel?
Webby is fat...he doesn't get more to eat than the other two...:dono ...he's just chubby! Hubby has started to call him Fat Kid Fudge.:shakehead
Malli is a decent size...but Gordo seems thin to me.
It may just be me being a nosey mom...but he seems like he should have more bulk to him.
I was holding him looking him over today while he grumped and grumbled at me...he's nice and warm under his coat...and strong too! :D
He escaped before I could get him on the scale...fast little bugger.:rotfl
Didn't help that Webby was eating the scale at the time.:shakehead

Slip Gordo a couple more of those bavarian cream donuts when the others aren't looking... Avocado is good for putting on weight, too.
I don't think you need to worry about them not wilding up, and I also don't think you need to worry about them being too familiar with you. I would say to enjoy them and clean their cage often enough to keep that eye in check...the ones who have sibs to live with and be released with aren't nearly as suseptible to being habituated as the singles (said the woman with the squirrel living in her guest room:shakehead ).

Making sure I understand correctly...Diamond brand jumbo walnuts are SAFE for squirrels??? If they are, how many can Miss Hope have per week???
Thanks:)

Sounds like Webby is serious about his grub.
Some kids eat to live, some live to eat.
You would have to hand feed Gordo (?) to fatten him up. I think the name jinxed him personally.
Ani started out smaller and weaned earlier than Finnagin. She now weighs more but he is longer. Here's why. I place the plate in the cage and she is the first one there. She is by no means fat and very active but she is all business. She is also much more food aggressive.
Finnagin would rather play. He'll grab something and carry it in his mouth for 5 minutes while bouncing off the walls. I swear he forgets to eat.
All about the party to that boy:shakehead
Don't know if this is case with you but personality and pecking order have a lot to do with it
As far as nuts are concerned I think you are far safer with commercially grown nuts Mycotoxins kill people too so you'd better believe there is going to be higher standard of quality control and storage.
I toss a handful of mixed nuts in the cage every couple of days...they are outside and very active. An indoor squirrel , one walnut/day is enough

The only thing they get free fed is their veg and rodent blocks(which everyone hates)...if one of them gets a Booball...everyone gets one...same thing with nuts...those are treats!
and then I look and Webby is even fatter! :thinking
I need to catch him and get a weight on him...I swear he has to be over a pound! :tilt
You guys go ahead and laugh...cause you know you're just as bad as me!:D
You're just jealous you didn't think of it first!:rotfl
(is there a pattern for tail warmers?) tinfoil :D

Yes, I order commercially grown nuts from the internet. The only thing around here that is wild is acorns, and they have eaten a ton of them this year. Some of my guys are little chub balls.

What is their group dynamic like?
Is Webby a foody or does he growl and paw slap the others.
it sounds like he is simply more interested in eating than the others.
I would watch them sometime, if you can, in a way that they don't know you're there. Watch what they do when you set their plate out. See who gets there first and who eats what.

lol :)
All you have to do is ask! I watch them all the time!
We set up their cage so we could watch them from the window without being seen!
Malli is the foody of the group...
she gets there first and then slaps and whines at everyone...
she'd bite if she could...but her mouth is usually too full for that! :)
Gordo is the second to arrive...he whines and grumbles a bit...
but he isn't too bad...gives Malli a slap or two right back!
HATES to be watched while he is eating!:D
Webby is the last to arrive...he waits till everyone is done and then he'll wander up for his noms. He is very easy going...except when Malli took his nut this morning! Jeez!:shakehead
He isn't as active as the other two...he's a lover not a fighter! :D
He likes to rough house with Gordo though...Webby is the king of the suplex!
Grabs Gordo around the waist and then jumps out into air taking poor Gordo with him! :shakehead Boys!

Finally got some pics of the kids...
yes I know pecans are fattening...but they are also large and smooth and take longer for the kids to crack open! :D
As it was I had to chase everyone and only got one decent pic of each!:shakehead

Oh, all such beauties with such glossy coats :D :Love_Icon :Love_Icon I would almost have a hard time telling them apart with such similar colouring... But then maybe not. Most people can't tell my squees apart in pictures, either. I love the black greys. They are very handsome fellers ;)

Ours are a little easier to tell apart...(for me at least)
Webby is a BIG boy and has a wider head! (and I trimmed his tail fur off straight across at the end!)
What can I say...I cheat! :D
Gordo has a narrow and fairly dark head...
smaller in the body...but looks a lot like Malli from a distance...
he is also the one who will follow me the most...:shakehead
Malli has a pure white whisker hair under her chin...and (don't tell Malli this) her eyes look a little poppy! lol :D
Oddly enough...the boys sit like rodents...arms pulled in to their sides wrists bent and paws facing down...
Malli likes to sit like the Fonz!
With her palms facing her tummy and her little thumb nubs facing up and out...so she always looks like she is giving you two thumbs up!:thumbsup
I have tried so hard to get a pic of her doing that...but she HATES the camera!:D
:D adorable little munchkins.....:D
