Tiger has had a whistle sound in his nose. When he eats he kinda has a congested sound. I don't see any discharge, but he's been rubbing his nose after he eats. Seems a little restless when he sleeps. Any suggestions? Thanks guys!!!!

I'm an overly worried squirrel mommy. When any of my babies sneeze or show signs of not feeling well I take them to the vet ASAP. Someone with better experience may be able to help you treat at home...but if it were me, I would take the squirrel to the vet. He may be restless because he can't breathe well enough and he's uncomfortable or in some distress of some sort. Better to be safe then sorry - especially when it comes to congestion issues. I say, vet time.

When my squirrelly had a whistling sound coming from his nose. I took him to the vet and he had a sinus infection. I don't want to scare you but it is better to be safe than sorry.

I don't want to scare you either but my Scooter was rubbing his nose each time he ate in his last week, no discharge. Now, it appears he had pneumonia.
I say better safe than sorry, have him checked ASAP. Things can change very fast and take a turn for the worse for these little creatures.

I've been thinking the same things as you guys. I called and left a message with the vet this morning at 6:30, to try to get him in this morning. He was rubbing his nose a lot this morning around and around his cage. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your thoughts. Can any of you tell me what your vets were giving you for med and how much? Thanks

We are just getting home and his cage has been scrubbed. As some of you thought he "is well on his way to having pneumonia" the vet said. He was given a 30 min. breathing treatment to help get the antibiotic into his lungs. Got a Baytril injection and liquid Baytril to be given twice a day starting tomorrow. Followed by Bene Bac for his tummy. He also needs a cool dehumidifier in his room. If he does well today and tonight and shows signs of improvement he will not need to go back in for a breathing treatment in the morning. Going to take a nap with him. Prayers needed.

Hi,
We're sending big time squirrely get well prayers to you and Tiger. I'm so glad you took him to the vet. :) :) :) Breathing issues are nothing to mess around with. Keep us posted on how Tiger does. I'm sure he'll be just fine. :thumbsup
I know when Toby was going through his ordeal, I spoiled him with backrubs - just don't make the mistake I did and give him one every time he assumes the scratchy position - I've soooooooooooooooo created a pampered monster - hee hee.
For example: Tonight Toby had to get his tummy med and he's not the most cooperative when it comes to meds. Mommy has to sneak them in the Critical Care Formula. Well Toby caught onto this tonight so I had to bargain. I promised Toby a back rub if he would take his formula. Mind you we're talking 4 syringes left, with the meds in the mix. Well Toby ate one syringe full, making yucky faces, sticking out his tongue, the whole nine yards of distaste during this 1 little syringe. Then, he crawled under this blanket, laid half way on his back and waited for me to come rub his chin, tummy and back. See my point? hee hee PAMPERED MONSTER!!!!! And, when I tried to give the rest of the formula, he pulled his back foot up over his mouth and held it there - Game Over. At least I got some of the med in for tonight. I'll have to come up with a new plan.:thinking
Feel better soon Tiger.

NutmegsMommy, Jackie, ScottersMom, -all. I have just returned home from another visit with the vet. Tiger got me up and was ready to eat this morning. Still labored breathing so he went in. Got another breathing treatment. Since my vet is heading out of town for the rest of the week, she sent me home with everything that I needed to give Tiger his breathing treatments for the next 3 days. WOW!!!! The hour drive in and back home was weighing on my mind- these little guys as we all know, can't handle stress. So.... we will stay home and get two treatments a day starting in the morning through Sunday. Recheck on Monday. All of your squirrel prayers are working. She said his eyes and lungs, looked and sounded much better today. Please keep praying.
I do have a question for you all, that she couldn't answer because she had never heard of it, but.... Tiger sleeps all day once he get Baytril. Have any of you experienced your babies sleeping once given this. It make him sleepy. Thanks so Much!!!! I'll keep you posted.

While Toby did not experience breathing issues, he was treated with Baytril for other stuff and he did sleep a lot when he was really ill. An illness can take so much out of a little squirrel that they just get pooped out and need to sleep. I would hesitate to say it's the Baytril - more the Baytril fighting the illness that's tired him out. Just make sure he gets his food and stays hydrated...but be careful with the hydration since he's got breathing issues. Don't force - give a little at a time if he gets fussy so nothing seeps down into the lungs. He sounds like he's chugging along good - hang in there squirrel momma. You're doing great!!!!!:thumbsup

Tiger is on day two of me giving breathing treatments, but day four total. He is such a trooper. I'm constantly amazed by him and his will. We haven't had much play time. But he has been getting and giving lots of lovin. We go back to the doctor on Monday at 10:00. Will keep you posted.
