My son just came in from outside and found a paralyzed squirrel in the front yard of our neighbor. His front legs work but his back legs don't. I've left him where we found him for now which is in the shade and it's only 60degrees outside. What should I do? Who should I call to help?

Thanks for any and all advice. I'd like to do the best thing for the animal.

He may have a back injury. Hopefully we can find someone on here that can take him in. He will need to be taken in. He is not safe out thre on his own. I would take him in a second but I am in Canada. Can you put him in a box with some towels in a dark quiet place? Perhaps one of those large tuperware storage boxes? Offer him some food and water.

Ok, I'll bring him in. I have a large plastic tub that I can put him in. What kind of food should I give him? Is there a good way to give him water or should I just pour it in a shallow bowl? Since he can't move, I think he'll end up spilling it.

I'm a total squirrel noob so sorry for all of the questions.

yes a shallow water bowl...if he tips, add pebbles for weight.
If you can put a heating pad HALF under a cat carrier or crate..I am worried he may chew thru plastic and cardboard, you may have to continue to look for back up cage.
Put heating pad half under container, set on low...
keep him warm dark and quiet.

I have sent out an sos for one of our members near you....
Do you have pecans or almonds?
grapes, apple chunks, romaine...
I will keep cking...brb
thank you for helping!:bowdown

can you take a quick pic?
do you see anything that looks like white small snow flakes?
white lint?
can you describe his movements?
thank you...

Ok I have the squirrel in a large rubbermaid type tub in the garage. He's pretty scared right now so I'm going to let him calm down before I bring out the food and water.

I don't see anything white like snowflakes or lint. He has no movement in his lower extremeties. He tries to crall with his front legs but he can't generate enough strength to move himself. To me, he looks paralyzed.

Thanks for all of the good info. Here's a quick pick of him.

can you make a rice buddy and reheat it every few hours..I think heat will help him, pour rice in a sock and tie off, heating for 20-40 seconds in microwave...
looks like a foxer..
I am still waiting for a response...
Do you have an emergency vet that you know well?
most vets/rehabbers will put him dowm immediately due to his injuries..
A injection of dexamethasone would be ideal.
sending good vibes, fingers crossed...:Love_Icon

Hopefully you can get the baby some help, those babies need alot of attention. We have had two of them, they will love you, but between bathing twice a week and the cleaning if the cages - it takes alot of work. If there is anything we can do to help, let us know. We have tips to help care for him/her if you decide you can keep him/her
