Hi: I have a pet squirrel who was too tame to be released and he is now 2.5 yeras old and, lately, he has been couching/sneezing on and off. This has been lasting for 5 days now. He has lost weight but he seems to eat fairly well. Today however, although he is not coughing (did not cough yesterday either) he seems very withdrawn, wants to be cuddled or seeks to hide and he takes refuge in his cabin as soon as I put him in his cage. He normally is VERY playful.
PLEASE! Please, does someone know of a vet in the Montreal area I could take him to? I have tried and tried with all my local ones and NOBODY wants to take a squirrel in! HELP please!

I am in Toronto and don't know any vets in Montreal. There are members from Quebec: Kristal, Whopoopwrass (sorry if misspelled), but I don't think they have a vet... There are two Ontario members that I know of who have some squirrel experience, but none of them is a vet. Runestones is preparing to get her license, I don't think she has a vet, though... Gosh... I cannot think of anything else at the moment... But if it comes down to bringing him to Ontario, I will be happy to be part of transportation, I will drive... Has anyone PMed to those QC ppl?...
P.S. I've just PMed those QC ppl and Runestonez (as far as I remember SF doesn't have a vet).... trying to think of other Canadian members...

Do you or anyone in your family have any oral antibiotics like amoxicillin? I am trying to find help for you. You can ask the vet for Clavamox, baytril, or SMZ-TMP. maybe they won't treat a squirrel but they may let you do it if they let you buy the meds...

I have some amox that is close to expiry, 500 mg capsules, and some metronidazole that it turned out I did not need. Those latter ones are new. I was actually on my way to bed here, having not slept for more than 24 hours, but I will stay with you for just a bit...
And there is no vet that I know of, sadly.

Kristal...you should get to bed if you haven't slept in 24 hours. If the meds are needed, you couldn't even ship tonight anyway, so the best that can be done is to get an address pm'd to you and perhaps you can get something out tomorrow, if this is the direction it goes...:dono :grouphug

At mugzeema's urging I am turning in. I will be checking the board as soon as I get up, though, so if you need what I have for meds, I am around later.
Maybe I should get an emergency kit with some proper meds, somehow? I am a packrat for old meds, especially ABs as my dogs have sometimes needed them, so at least that... This will be the 2nd time That someone in Montreal needs medication help since i joined back in august, though. If anyone wants to help out with me getting an emergency kit, feel free to PM me.

I just got the pm from Nancy in NY. Sorry I don't curently know of a vet here or there in Montreal. Have any of the rehabbers on here figured out what is wrong with him?
Can you give us a detailed description of his diet, amount of sun light that he gets, breed of squirrel( red, grey, flyer etc.)?
You say he has been coughing. Is here any snot involved? Does he have a clicking sound when he breathes? Is the breathing laboured? Has he taken a fall recently? any injuries to the face or nose? Any swelling on the nose or head?
Could it be odontoma? I know there are some threads on here try using the search function for them.
Please give us a much info as possible.
Do any rehabbers have any antibiotics that could be sent? One rehabber (who wished to remain unnamed) sent me some Ivermectin for Mr. Tilty years back. It was sent in a little metal box so that it didn't get x-rayed. It arrived fine and Tilty was cured. If doing so don't put your return address.
Make sure your guy stays hydrated.
Maybe give him a heating pad under his cage?

Hi Astra just PM'd me...
I can't recommend a vet personally...but these are exotics vets recommended by my OREO members...if they see rabbits they probably see other rodents and may take squirrels as well!
You may have already tried them...but I'm putting them out there for you just in case...I also heard there was an excellent vet in Lachine that was a whiz with ratties...

I always block my calls and dont give my name/location when calling vets/rehabbers - it sometimes takes a few days and lots of referrals and even a few nasty people, but both times Ive been able to find one eventually. Dunno if its the same in Canada, but in the US you just dial *67 before the phone number.

My own vet MAYBE would treat him, she did when he was a pinkie - we've known her for 30 years - but for a full grown squirrel it's too tricky to bring him to the clinic. I'm going to do my darn best to see if maybe she could make a house call.

Bordetella doesn't seem likely for a house squirrel unless you have dogs and even then they would have to have been exposed. My concern is the withdrawal and weight loss...
I PM'd something for you to check out.
Make sure this guy is warm and hydrated.
Remove wood/pine shavings if you use them.
Search for anyone that Amoxicillin if you have no other recourse. Hopefully he is better in the AM and this is a false alarm.

I don't know anyboy who'd have antibiotics. Wish I had kept some of mine :( I do have a dog, and we went back and forth to the vet for a claw problem he had. Also I just recently I gave Scooter (my little squirrel) a branch I picked up outside... then there is also the fact that I, myself, got a horrible flu some 3 weeks ago and was sick for 2 whole weeks. I've only been feeling better for a week and now he started. Could I be the one who would have infected him?
Here's what I can tell you about Scooter and his illness. He's a pet squirrel, grey, weighs 683gr, male, 2.5 yrs old. Usually he's very playful and affectionate. He began coughing just a couple of times about 5 days ago. Then 4 days ago he had a real bad coughing/sneezing fit and he seemed freaked out as he tried to cough and sneeze - bolted out of his cabin. I never saw any snot but his little nose was wet at times. Until today he was eating just fine. He didn't cough or sneeze yesterday and today but I can hear like a tock-tock when i hol him against my chest. Today I found him hiding in the bottom of his cage and when I picked him up he ran off and went to hide in the corner on his favorite shelf in the room.

I find he feels a bit warm and he doesn't want to stay in his cabin which tells me he may find it too hot in there (he has little flanelette blankies in there). He doesn't seem to have any 'fight' in him, like a normal squirrel would! That's what worries me... he's usually so full of fun and spunk! His breathing sounds loud to me when I put my ear to shis chest.
How do I hydrate him? With the 1cc or 3cc syringe I used for the babies? I'm not sure he's going to take to that since he's full grown now. Can I give him some grapes at least? Lately he seemed to crave them.

Thank you for the references for vets. Unfortunately, for Dr. Gauvin you can't even get passed his secretary, she hates squirrels and yes, they are illegal in Quebec. So there is no hope there. The other place I don't know anybody and they won't take a squirrel, for sure, since they're illegal.

Orange pedialyte is the best . If you have fruit juice you can water it down a bit wrap him gently and calmly in a towel and offer some from a syringe. There is a recipe for homemade pedialyte but he may reject it. If he will eat the grapes they have plenty of water but he could still use more.. If you are hearing breathing noises you may want to take him into a steamy bathroom. Eating and and drinking are positive signs.
Make sure he's urinating regularly.
keep listening to his chest.
If he has enough energy to fight you he'll be ok for awhile so relax.
Do try to get fluids into him though.
Call your vet first thing in the morning and explain what's going on.
I'm hoping they'll help you out!
If not we will do what we can here.

For future reference, take your dog in and for a fecal check or something . Say he rubbing his bum...Oh and by the way I need ABs for a squirrel with a respiratory infection, don't worry about dosing or treating you have it under control. You just want the meds. The vet will groan but hey at that point he's not doing anything illegal.
It worked for me ...once :D
Keep listening for wheezing or raspy breathing and depression. Watch urine output closely. You want a lot and often so you have to get it in there :D

He's 2.5 yrs old Jackie. No issue with his teeth that I can see, none with his ears either. His diet consists of romaine lettuce, spinach, brussel sprouts, zucchini, squash & squash seed, sweet potato, grapes, apples, occasional corn on the cob, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, almonds(shelled and unshelled all of them), 1/4 slice of 16grain bread every day.
He has flanelette blankies in his cabin and in his hammock and he's currently all tucked inside them in his hammock. I also have an extra heater in the room to keep it warmer than the rest of the house. I'm heaading up to put a vaporizer in the room.

Thanks for the suggestions. At this point I think I need to let him rest, he seems quite stressed with all the handling for weighing him and getting at least a couple of cc's of Pedialyte into him. I'll call my vet in the morning and hope she will give me the meds, I PRAY she will give me the meds. It's illegal here in quebec to give antibiotics without the animal being seen by the vet. I've put a vaporizer in the room, it's nice and warm in there too. I left him some grapes and pieces of plum, hoping he may nibble on that overnight and it could help. I'll have cold lettuce for him in the morning and sugar peas, those are his favorites so I hope he WILL eat. I hope I can convince my vet to do a house call ASAP sometime today.

Don't go to anima plus, for sure. They are only licensed for pain relief and euthanasia of wild animals, and my experience is that they are sticking to their guns on that even though they have the expertise to treat rodents. Your own vet would be your best bet, I think.
I was told by someone from urban animal advocates that it is not illegal to keep squirrels in Qc. The treatment of wild animals seems to be fairly regulated, however, either by the government or by the veterinary licensing body. Apparently, a vet can lose their license for doing unauthorised treatment of an animal classified as wild.
You can try calling urban animal advocates for advice, but I have had a hell of a time even reaching them, for the most part. My phone does not accept incoming calls where the number is blocked, and they will not unblock it. One woman who works there called me on her cell, but apparently they are not even allowed to communicate with people by email. It all sounds kind of weird to me. However, I would encourage you to contact them. I wonder what kind of help they would offer if they could actually be reached.

If you have concrete info to the contrary on the legality of people keeping squirrels, please let me know and point me to a reference for that. It won't affect whether I keep my kits through to spring or not, but it is good to know such things. As far as I know, only vets are regulated.
Do try calling urban animal advocates, if you would. I would like to know about veterinary services for myself, should I need them, and I also wanted to ask them what is involved in becoming a licensed rehabber in Qc. Since they won't call me back, would you mind collecting some info on my behalf?
Keep us apprised about Scooter. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your little monster over here ;) I am just east of downtown, and I am around for help if I can offer any. :)

Thanks all for your concern. Scooter is up and this morning he is eating, albeit not a whole lot. He had a bit of lettuce, some snow peas and a bit of sweet potatoes plus a dozen mealworms or so, a couple of grapes and some plum. However he seems to want to lay down and he makes a little moaning sound when I pick him up though. He usually loves it when I pick him up but since yesterday and today he seems to avoid it. He is not sneezing or coughing.
Did I mention he has been moulting this week? He's getting a new coat, softer and greyer than his previous one. His coat does look and feel fine I must say.
In his diet I forgot to mention that I put rodents vitamins in his drinking water and he also gets mealworms (he had a bunch of those this morning seemed to be craving them) and he also gets some occasional cheerios and bran flakes (he's not that cazy abou those. I'll go up and give him some pumpkin now... he usually LOVES that.
Of course I do provide leaves and branches. I had not mentioned it because I thought it would be obvious for any squirrel owner to give that much at least :) His cage is in front of a window that faces south, some 2 feet from it, so he does get sunlight but if need be I will get a lamp AND I will get what you suggested for the calcium supplement.
My vet is in surgery today but the clinic said she will call me back today. I'll try to convince he to make a house call.

I would absolutely start calcium treatment...
This is the same diet and age that I fed my pet sq Rocky...you need a calcium fortified diet, period.
I would go ahead and make arranfgements to get some BAYTRIL...why screw up a gut with clavamox...to be safe. I really think you may see considerable change just adding calcium into his diet..start NOW please.
I have copied a link to help you get going.
Understand that in order to have calcium absorbed, other vitamins are required, but for now...straight calcium is going to help alot.
I know, I have walked this path.
Sqs do not do change well, so be prepared that after your baby gets back on it's feet, YOU will need to ammend his diet, and usually it takes tough love.
No seeds , no corn, nothing high in phosphorus!:nono
also, too much calcium WILL stop absorbsion of calcium...so read all literature.
I could be way off here, but please trust me and at least try this treatment, it WILL NOT HURT YOUR SQ either way! I promise{if you follow specs}.
All peeps in places where vets and meds are hard to obtain...keep searching for sources, this is always going to be an issue with sqs...
Ask friends and family for pet meds, you never know what your friends dogs have in the first aide box.
Girl Scouts are prepared....some human meds can save sqs lives also.
I have with success several times sent meds to Canada...but have heard different from others attempts.
Good Luck...:Love_Icon

Emergency treatment for MBD
and also LONG TERM MBD diet
lots of other stickeys that can change your sqs life...
please take the time and make the adjustments.
as above, I maybe way off base, but I sure as heck would try if I knew someone that loved sqs as much as JIT made this heart suggestion...
If you do find a vet, you can have blood values done also.
Thank you for reading all this and for finding TSB...

Good Luck...:Love_Icon

this link is to the nutritiion forum...there are several sticky there with explicit details on GOOD CALCIUM RICH FOODS
Thank you for reading all this and for finding TSB...
and thanks most of all for loving a sq!:Love_Icon

Ok so unfortunately they won't give me meds without seeing the animal but I will keep trying, one of the techs melissa said to call the clinic (514)486-5258 and ask to speak to her(tell her Jade said to call), she said she would try to do something. Emphasize that he is a "pet" and is tame. We do see some pet squirrels there...mostly for teeth trims. Me and some techs have rescued babies and treated them so they are familiar with sqs.
I would also do what Jackie said and start treatment for low calcium it won't hurt him and you will see a difference pretty quickly if that's what's wrong.
Also try St Hyacinthe faculty of vet medicine. You can try calling Urban Advocates but I doubt she will call you back....she also doesn't seem to believe in saving older sqs. If you can get a hold of her though, she may have advice for vet care for him.

YOU TREAT SQS there???? Oh my gosh! How wonderful to know! I got the Baytril now, from my vet but we think it is mor likely MBD since he's eating again and not coughing... more concerned because of the lethargy and not wanting to be handled and his recent loss of weight.
I'm starting him on the emergency MBD treatment.

Yes they will sometimes make exceptions and teats sqs!
I'm so happy your vet gave you some baytril and I'm glad you will start treatment for MDB. It might help to give him and additional heat source right now(if you haven't already). If you have trouble finding the pure calcium carbonate Walmart sells it ( I had a heck of a time finding it). And I still have some here. When my little guy had symptoms of MDB you could really see it when he walked, his lower back was slouchy and weak.
