So I'm not sure if this is exactly life threatening, but I am concerned. I fed my squirrel this morning- his blocks, a baby carrot, and an acorn to get him out of the tree he jumped in (as violent storms were stirring up). I just came home and went out to give him a mixture of veggies and he greeted me with the carrot in his mouth and he was his typical rowdy self but I noticed what appeared to be blood in his urine. Could this be from his diet? He eats primarily his blocks, veggies, (occassional carrots, broccoli, squash, avocados) and then I normally give him a piece of an apple or grape as a treat along with a couple acorns. I did give him a piece of a navel orange yesterday for the first time, but I can't imagine that turning his urine. Is it possible he has acquired an UTI or bladder infection? Help!

Have you been feeding him acorns? This has a tendacy to turn the urine a reddish/brown color sometimes confusing it with blood...:)
If you care to read further about "acorn pee" here is a link...:D

ACORN PEE!!!!
Stop feeding acorns for a bit and see if the color is normal.
It does look bloody but it's something in the acorn...tannins perhaps.
What we eat is what we pee!

We need a special room on the board entitled "No, he/she doesn't have a UTI, it's acorn pee!"

A little earlier in the season, my wilds were just gorging on acorns (there are so many now they are throwing them aside to dig and bury other nuts - so spoiled) and I swear, my deck was starting to look like a murder scene. I actually had someone ask me why there were blood spatters all over my porch swing pillows (while backing nevously away from me) and I muttered "acorn pee."

Yes, he loves his acorns! I'm a so relieved to know that is what is probably causing it. Thanks! :)
