You can use either but a bowl is cleaner and safer for them. They figure out how to use it very quickly

I prefer a bowl - no water bottles in the wild. The bottles are difficult to clean well, too.
Buy the Crock Lock type that you can attach to the cage wire - no knock overs. Look in the parrot section of your local pet store.

I don't know if either is cleaner than the other. An open dish needs to be cleaned/changed once or twice daily because stuff falls in it...like poop or even the whole squirrel. Water bottles get that lickie scummy stuff if you don't change them every couple of days. A bottle watered squirrel stills knows how to drink from a puddle

I will put a bowl of water in the cage if my squirrels have not figured out how to use a water bottle but the water bottle is much preferred by me. They poop even in the bowls that attach to the cage and still make a mess with them.

I used to think "if I give my squirrels water bottles they will never know how to find water in the wild." NOT true. Soon as I put the little water-bottle-raised darlings into the release enclosure, which only has one big ol' humongous water bowl on the ground, they figure out where it is instantly. Why do I always think squirrels are not as super-intelligent as they actually are?
I like water bottles because bowls mean pooping in them, plus changing the water means escapes, bites, or both. :sanp3
The LIXIT water bottles sold at Petco, Petsmart etc...;.are the best. They don't leak, even after a couple of years.

I use a water bottle that I got from petco. It works great. At first I used a bowl and he would spill it or get himself wet.I wondered if he would learn to drink from the bottle at first, well took him about 20 seconds to figure it out.:wott

I'm wondering what type of water everyone gives their squirrels. Is one better than another? ie...distilled, spring, city, well, etc. What is best?
:dono
my squirrel has a water bottle but a bowl right under it cause he has a tendancy to chew a hole in the bottel and the water will leak out...

I personally always use a GLASS water bottle while I have them in house in rehab then I add a crock to their cage
(along with bottle) during their last month with me inside so they can adapt to lapping up liquid with their tongues
and as IR said they never fail to figure it out right away...... :thumbsup
BTW - all my GLASS water bottle are from Chris's Squirrel & More:
Never DRIPS!!

(they have silver plated covers with plastic little ducks inside)

For my 2 wilds,
I simply place a plastic tab, using its cover as base stabilizer, I place them at the exact same spot in between junction of a huge tree. About 7 foot off the ground. Then I would refill once about a day or 2.
I stand afar to observe, my brits and Elizabeth sq come out took turns to visit 'water point' and lick up.
They take 1 to 2 minutes. It excites me to know they accepted my installation of a 'squirrel water point.'

While the young'uns are indoors, I use a bottle in the cage.. when they go to pre-release I switch to bowl - and I keep a bowl outdoors with water for my girls and their friends at all times. :) Anyway you look at it, it's cleaner than most water they will find in hot weather.
OH!! how I LOVE my squirrel-girls and their friends. A day without my squirrels is most definitely a day without 'sunshine' for me. <3
