Hi! I just joined the squirrel board, and have learned so much already!

My 5 week old, Tiger, (whom I have had for about 3 weeks) was eating Esbilac formula about 4 times per day. Day before yesterday, he didn't eat as much as normal, then yesterday he seemed lethargic and ate less (just wanted to sleep). I have been waking him every few hours from about 9 last night and giving him pedialyte. He's still not drinking much much does seem to be perking up a little. I started the pedialyte last night because from what I have read he may have been dehydrated a little. His poop was kind of thin up until today (I'm assuming maybe the change to pedialyte helped that) and he is peeing good. What should I do? I am thinking I will go back to formula tonight.

Thank you!!!

NO ESBILAC!!!! STOP IT RIGHT NOW...... Order Fox Valley Immediately, and there's a goat's milk formula on here (Someone plz post it) to hold you over until it comes. Esbilac changed the formula and it now gives squirrels horrible problems, even death, that's probably your problem...More experienced help will be on soon..

Use the "Goats Milk" formula till you can get some Fox Valley. It's here on the board, I'll try to find ir for you. I know it's a ratio of Goat milk, heavy whipping cream, and vanilla yogurt. Off to look

I found this, it's Jackie's recipie and she's awesome and super experienced with squirrels

And there is a temp formula which is more recommended from another member, Jackie.

3 parts goats milk
1 part whipping cream
1 part danon or other all natural yoghurt with bacterial culture (vanilla or natural flavoured)

It is all in this indispensable thread here:

HOPE THIS HELPS !!! POST PICS SOON PLEASE!!!:poke

Thank you all for telling me about the esbilac. Now I have another question--I couldn't get the goats milk at any stores tonight, and he has been on pedialyte since last night. Should I continue the pedialyte tonight or let him have the esbilac? I'm afraid I might make him weaker if I don't give him any formula soon. Thank you!

You can use Just Born puppy formula until you get the goats milk or the Fox Valley...You can look in PetSmart or perhaps even Walmart...
The goat's milk recipe is just until you get the Fox Valley...You can order it from their site http://foxvalleynutrition.com/main/home.asp or from http://henryspets.com this is one of our member's store and she will overnight this to you if you want...as will Fox Valley I would get the 32/40 1 pound of that and then when that runs out switch to the 20/50

you can use canned goats milk, available at almost all grocery stores, just follow the directions on the can (if its evaporated) and then use it for the fresh goats milk in the recipie.

:grouphug wishing you all the best... also am wondering if he's warm etc... i totally agree with all the formula suggestions.... but this warmth thing is just niggling me so i have to share it ... and now ... back to the regular program.... fox valley and the goats milk combination....:thumbsup

(ps; health food stores also have powdered goats milk) :thumbsup

(warmth is very important to help them digest.... and get fox valley asap ... nick will ship to you overnight, it's about $12 a bag and keeps in the freezer for a long time....)

when making it up ...it's thicker than esbilac and you'll have to space out your feedings more because it takes longer to go through the digestive track.... I think the recommended time is 2 1/2 hours .... at least...

ok ....:grouphug and :Welcome

omg... i'm so sorry....

so you have the choice between him starving for an extra day or giving him something that might be hurting him....

i'm so sorry i can't even begin to think about that decision....

i'll see if someone can come on to help.... :grouphug

Did you buy a new can of Esbilac? if not,I dont understand why he is just getting sick now. I have always used the same as you until a month or so ago and now I use Fox Valley.

Right now I have 5 babies. 3 from one nest, the other 2 from different nest. I just got 1 about a hour ago and haven't fed it yet because I'm waiting for help on some clavamox.

Anyway, all the babies (expect the new from tonight) has been on the same can of formula you use,and they were fine. There is a list on their website of lots numbers on the bad cans.

Keeping your baby on pedialyte will be fine until the AM. He will not strave to death. You are going to have to slowly adjust him to the goats milk anyway.

I just got my invoice today on the Fox Valley order I placed on Friday,a 1 pound bag of 20/50 (which is what you need, the 20/50) is $10.15.and my freight was $10.56! Total of $20.71. But I do like this formula and also use it for my opossums. I will stay with it,just gotta find a cheaper way to get it to me. I did not get the formula today like I should have.I hope its here in the AM because I only have enough left for just a day or 2.

Last month I did run out and had to put them all back on the esbilac puppy formula I had them on to begin with, and they were fine. Like I said, you need to check your lot number on the can you have already and in the future use Fox Valley. There is another brand that people use too.It starts with a Z ??

babies seem to develop stomach problems....watery poops etc..around teething time....

i've no idea why ...it just seems to happen at the same time....

nick at fox valley can ship normal ground postage...about $3. etc... and so can 4skwerlz at henrys health blocks ...link above from nancy....

overnight is also possible and very recommended this first time....

also dilute the fox valley when you get it for at least the first day ....

but please start a separate thread for that .... so you'll get fresh ideas ....

You're thinking of Zoologic -- also made by Pet Ag, I think.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that if Tiger80 cannot get any other formula tonight that she should at least give the squirrel some Esbilac, even diluted. He needs CALORIES, and the Pedialyte has too much sodium to be used for an extended time period (more than 24 hrs). Keeping the baby out of hypoglycemic shock is important and he needs nourishment. But please, order the Fox Valley and pick up the goat's milk tomorrow as early as you can! :thumbsup

He likely has pneumonia. It happens frequently when some of the formula goes down the wrong tube and gets into the lungs. It is not your fault, and the main symtom is lethargy and can be mistaken sometimes for a simpler diagnosis of failure to thrive. The first thing you need to do is find a veterinary clinic with a doctor willing to treat wildlife or a rehabber. HE NEEDS ANTIBIOTICS. One symptom is a clicking in the lungs, but it is sometimes hard to hear. The antibiotics will not harm him if the diagnosis is wrong, but they will save him if it is right, so do it as a preventative measure. Do NOT self medicate if you have any leftover meds at home, because an accurate weight is vital to giving safe dosage.

On a side note- 1 part Esbilac, 1/2 part whipping cream, 1 & 1/2 part warm water is sufficient to raise caloric and fat content with your current supplies. I have heard wonderful things about Fox Valley from reputable rehabbers, but mine have all done well on this ratio with Esbilac.

I totally agree w/ Island Rehabber about giving the esbilac.

Yes, I was talking about Zoologic. I have never used it,but I do know some people who do.All I have ever used was esbilac and will still use it if I don't have Fox Valley which I just switched to a month or so ago. I was told to stop using the heavy whipping cream w/ esbilac though, but since its changed should I go back to doing that? I stopped doing that last year and everything was fine.It worked for me. I am NOT going against anyone, just giving my experience. I know the basic stuff, and I'm still learning what was never told to me before (from this wonderful group)!

I paid regular ground for my FV and it was still $10.00 shipping,I better check that.......

Thanks everyone, for your help! I feed Tiger about 3 ml esbilac in the middle of the night, which was the most he had eaten at one time in a couple of days. He also seemed to be a little more active. I've got fox valley on the way and will find goats milk today to use until it gets here.

This morning, he is not wanting to eat (he ate about a ml) and is just "laying around." Also, I may be imagining this, but it seems like his little feet are sort of turning in? Does that mean anything? Thanks!

Seems he was doing better after the pedialyte, was well enough to want formula again then got sick again after the esbilac. I would suggest just pedialyte is better until you get the goats milk. You will most likely find it in the baking section with the evaporated milk. Poor little guy, will be praying for him:grouphug

I hadn't thought of that--thank you for your thoughts and your prayers.

I wish I knew why his feet are turning in, any way to post pics? I am hoping someone w/more experience will come on again to give opinion on them.:dono
Sounds like you are a great momma for Tiger :Love_Icon and you sure found the right place for help. Don't feel bad about the esbilac, I used it too before finding this place. For me, I found TSB just in time for Garth to be saved.:jump
