I just realized I posted this on the incorrect forum. Apologies.

A week ago we found a baby squirrel (8-10 weeks old), cared for him to a t, he was energetic last night, and ate plenty this morning.

I went to feed him for his mid-day and found him frozen in a superman style posture. Over the next hour he had maybe 10 seizures. Some very minor with others contorting his little body.

He died curled up in a fetus position while sitting in my lap outside. Very sad.

This would be the 3rd baby squirrel we have raised. The first one made it through being raised by us and adapted very well to living outside.

The second died very young due to pneumonia.

This was the first time I have seen seizures of this nature in a baby squirrel. Something I would like to point out is he was born with only 4 toes on his front feet. He was missing his "thumbs". I know sometimes when animals (and humans for that matter) are born with undeveloped limbs there can be internal issues as well.

Woops...I believe I posted this on the wrong forum. Apologies...

I'm just curious why this occurred so suddenly and if anyone knows what the possible cause could be?

He was by far the sweetest and most reserved of the 3 we have raised. He only wanted to be sitting with us on the couch constantly.

We will miss him very much.

I am so sorry; poor little munchkin.

Was he still on formula?

Could he possibly have gotten into anything - from household chemicals to a houseplant of some sort?

Yes he was still on formula. I had began to introduce nuts, berries, and some small veggie to him but honestly he was rather small for his age. Definitely the runt of the litter I am sure.

No way possible he could have gotten into anything. His cage is elevated 3 feet off the ground about 30 feet away from the kitchen in a very open part of the house.

It was very strange that this happened but I now recall having had a little dog this same thing happened to when I was younger. He was fine and then one day he seized.

It is always possible that he took a fall inside his cage and suffered a head injury that triggered these. Even if he didn't have far to fall, they can strike their heads falling.

I'm so sorry you lost him...

Last season, we lost close to half of our babies due to a unknown intestinal worm / parasite. After we had one of our babies evaluated, we found out about it and since every baby we get gets treated for to be safe. The babies would be fine one day and within 24 hours they would be gone. They would scream for no reason and then the seizures would start.

It sounds as if he had other unseen things going on...:sad
Baby sqs are usually very energetic...so for him to be soo 'reserved' isn't normal.
Thank you for helping him cross, he was loved:grouphug

I also want to share that sqs do not have thumbs, they have wee nubs instead.

Rest in Peace baby squirrel:Love_Icon
