Hi Ya'll,
I really hope that someone out there will post some pics of a typical day's feeding. My E.T. is 8 months old and he's rather picky. I'm wondering if we're feeding him enough and of the right things. It'd be great to see the little "dinner" plates that you create and feed your NR's.
I was reading earlier that nuts seem to bring out aggressive behavior, that would explain E.T.'s recent aggression perhaps.
I'm thanking ya'll in advance for taking the time to take a few pics of your dinner plates :thankyou

Whoa! Now I'm wondering if I'm starving my little turd??
Littlefoot usually gets - 2 or 3 acorns, 2-3 Boo-Balls, a few pieces of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radishes and snap beans ( any combination of those depending on the day)
I didn't want to up the amount of veggies because he very very seldom eats them all but maybe I should anyway?

I started Max on vegetables first and limited his nuts & fruits... he also ate Zupreem Primate Dry (I use HHB now).

Yeah he only gets fruit once a day, a couple chunks of apple or peach, he also usually gets a couple small pieces of avacado ( cut very carefully so he doesnt get anything that touched the seed or the skin LOL )

The skin of an avocado is a big No No for Squirrels..... bad for them.
no seed either - like w/ all fruit seeds

I will have to take pics. This should be a sticky...come on, squeeps, show us the num-nums!!!
I typically give them all a pecan when I first wake up (as I have to get the kids off to school first, so gives them a little something). Then I put out a big bowl of formula, and their hhb's. Late morning, I will give veggies, some regular rodent block, greens. After that, they get a few nuts. Lunch, which actually is usually around 2 pm, more greens, veggies, a little fruit. After that, some monkey chow biscuits. Dinner, which I feed later, around 7 or so, is more greens, veggies, one fruit, more rodent block and another bowl of formula, although not as much as the morning meal. And that is for four, so we go through quite a bit of food!!!! lol Oh, I also give them mushrooms with their dinner. And usually sometime during the day, I will bring in wild foods (leaves, branches, etc) during the afternoon, as well. They LOVE that part of the day! And I also give apple sticks a couple times a week, as well.

My understanding is that both the skin and the seed are toxic to squees :( I cut sooo much away to play safe that I waste probably 90% of the avacado LOL

My three (10 - 13 wks old) will no longer allow me to hold them and take the formula from a syringe. I stuck a syringe through the bars one day and they were practiacally fighting each other over it. I now put up a water bottle with formula in it and they pretty much take turns drinking their fill. I do this while I am in the room feeding Davey. I leave the water bottle with formula up for about 15 minutes and then take it down. If they are still drinking, I will leave it up til they finish.
I tried a bowl but they were terrified of the formula getting on their noses. So, this is nice and easy and less mess.

No pictures but Knothead and the soon to be released get "salad" twice a day
I try to mix it up to keep it interesting but their plate is overflowing with any veggie I have in the fridge. They all love Mushrooms so they get those everyday. Knothead loves baked sweet potatos. Sometimes they clean the plate and somtimes they don't touch it and go for their stash. They all get Pecans at the end of the evening...Everyday there is Broccoli, Cauliflower and carrots and most days that stuff winds up on the ground:rotfl but they have to put in in their mouth to sling it so surely some gets in their system:rotfl

I thought carrots were something dangerous to give regularly because of the vitamin A? Did I read wrong? Have I been depriving my little turd of one of his favorite things for no reason? :( We will have to try the sweet potato, LF's favorite by far is avacado.. Im pretty sure he would do a backflip for it if I asked him to :) :rotfl

Knothead REALLY needs Vitamin "A" his eyesight is horrible. I think as long as they don't gorge on the bad stuff and get plenty of the good stuff a little POPTART now and again won't hurt:thumbsup But usually they will choose the bad stuff over the good stuff or at least mine do. But like I said the plate is spewing over and things are falling on the floor as I take it to them so there is plenty of good stuff to choose from. Since Knothead's eyesight is so bad he will take what's on top first so the good stuff is always on top:thumbsup

I just put a few pieces of carrots in my 5 weeks old cage (only vegetable in the house right now) and he did not like the wet feeling when he touched it - shook his little nose and ran away - lol. We will see how he likes them once they dry from being washed off before giving them to him. BTW - this is his first vegetable, ever.

LF ate a nice hole in his water bottle overnight, so he got re introduced to a bowl of water today.. First he pooped in it.. then proceeded to put the food he didn't want anymore in there ./sigh Sometimes he makes me rethink trying to get pregnant :) LOL
Anyway here is a picture of his "dinner" ? he gets about this amount twice a day usually, more if he seems hungry and has actually eaten most of his food. He goes through phases, Monday radish is his favorite thing ever, Tuesday he hates it, Wednesday morning Cauliflower is the best thing since sliced bread annnd by Wednesday night its poopy and he cant possibly put that vile stuff in his mouth :)
He also gets treats throughout the day, a chunk of apple or pear, and the occasional Cheerio ./bows her head in shame .... I know.. I know , but they are the only thing he has consistently *LOVED* since he started on solids :) Since he decided that avacado is the tastiest thing in the world he usually gets a small chunk of that each day too

Here is the one I buy and it works greats, never leaks... 2 for $10

Sometimes she doesn't finish the whole thing and I have to help. Usually that's after she's demolished the fried blooming onion.
Ok, mine loves the rat blocks, IDK why, I give her dried fruits and nuts as treats, but she totally ignores the HHB. I throw in some yoghurt + FV periodically (every couple of days) but she spends days outside, so, who knows.
Edit: I do offer fresh veggies, but she shuns most of them. Pea pods she likes, broccoli, but turns her nose up at a lot. (She'll eat dandelion leaves with potential dog pee (in the yard stuff) on them but not fresh asparagus wat??)

Nice to know that you've never been homeless or in dire straits (see what I did there????) but if you get there, you either learn, or you don't. Odds are, it'll learn. They haven't been around for thousands of years for nothing.

This is todays dinner. It's about 2 inches deep and is for four juvie squirrels. In there we have: apple, grape, snow peas, carrot, broccoli stalks cut into rounds, kiwi fruit, sunflower seeds, pecans, avocados, beet greens, kale, almonds, mushrooms, yellow cherry tomatoes, acorn squash, and I don't remember what else if there was anything else. It's a mix of little bits of many things since they like variety. By the end of dinnertime it is all over the top of the nesting box :)

At least as I understand it, carrots are rich in beta carotene, which is like proto-vitamin a. The body can easily transform it into as much vitamin a as it needs, but it is not dangerous in large amounts like vitamin a is - such as you would get in huge amounts of fish or by taking too many supplements, it just turns you orange

Oh, are mushrooms bad? A lot of people have mentioned feeding them mushrooms, so I figured I would add some.
Also, I give them pine cones and green branches every day which they like to eat and tear up.
EDIT to Erik: Poutine is Québec's poison gift to the world. I am so glad it has made it all the way to Oregon... Go forth, greasy cultural ambassador! And make the world too tired to fight with your multiple calories! I go to a sovereigntist cultural center for conversational French lessons, sometimes. The tutor was very pleased to hear that poutine had made it to China. He said that this is a very good thing since a nation that loves poutine will never be a military superpower ;p
Ok, you had to be there, but trust me, it was funny :D

A couple points:
The "good," "fair" and "evil" categories in the food chart are based ONLY on the calcium to phosphorus ratio of the food, nothing else - if you read further down the thread, you will see that the author spells that out. So mushrooms are "evil" because they have way more phosphorus that calcium. But mushrooms are also rich in Vitamin D, which is necessary for calcium absorbsion. A note about mushrooms - I do NOT feed the gills, and I also "peel" the outer layer of mushroom away. There have been salmonella cases associated with mushrooms and the gills are impossible to clean.
Also, the fear of Vitamin A toxicity is also a bit overblown. It is almost always seen either in cases of oversupplementing with vitamins and was also an issue for white explorers in the Arctic who began eating the Inuit diet, which is very high in liver, which has an enormous amount of A in it. A piece of carrot isn't going to hurt your squirrel. Mister P will ONLY eat the little baby carrots. I have even sat down and CARVED carrots into the right shape (:shakehead , please help me, someone) and he turns his nose up, but baby carrots - OFFICIAL store bought baby carrots turned down on the carrot lathe are the BOMB. He likes romaine and curly kale, mustard greens, cauliflower sometimes, celery not at all, nor radishes. The insides of green peppers are good and he would eat his weight in snap peas if I let him. P is not into fruit except for blueberries. He occasionally gets some cooked sweet potato. And of course avocado. I have given him corn only a couple times - he adores it but I almost never give it to him. He eats Harlan Teklad and loves boo balls rolled in sesame seeds. I stick mostly to hazelnuts and almonds because of their relatively favorable calcium:phosphorus ratio, and he gets his beloved and adored hickory nut every night. He has never had a peanut! Oh yeah, once a day he gets his goo. It is ground Harland Teklad blocks mixed with Yobaby yogurt in either vanilla or banana with a little blob of almond butter mixed in, heated in the micro and served to him on a spoon. OMG he LOVES this!

Oh, yes, there was a little bit of mango in there... I knew I forgot something. I have a fridge full of veggies, so they will actually get other things at another meal. At night I give them block, squirrel cookies, sunflower seeds, a few nuts, sometimes in shell for extra fun, and some veggies that will keep well through the night to the morning. That is so that they browse on really healthy stuff when they wake up hungry, such as the squirrel cookies which are now less sweet but chock full of organic blackstrap molasses and formula.... ergo less interesting, but really good for them.

salad bar!
I seldom feed sunflower seeds, and only to the flyers.
They are high in phosphorus and too much can and will stop calcium absorbsion. Calcium being the biggest diet issue with sqs in captivity.
I also have found that greys with heavy sunflower seed diet are aggressive, jittery and antsy...they are not choice, even for the wilds.
Moderation is key.
I feed a huge variety of veggies...I do not feed eggplant and it is all over the farmers market currently, looks great, good price, but It made one of my keepers very ill for three days, initally started with vomitting.
It is family to deadly nightshade, very toxic to some.
I also do not feed IMPORTED chestnuts, aflotoxin/mycotoxins:shakehead .
Never raw peanuts, same thing.
Variety is best, always...my kids love carrots, I just do not give everyday, but maybe three times a week. Same with everything...always changing!
wow, my sqs love the gills of the shrooms best...I feed everyday to flyers and three times a week to greys...hate salmonella..
Lots of winter squash on the market too...butternut, acorn, chayote.
Bok choy is always a hit and purslane, both are very healthy.

Ha, our squirrels must be the most pampered squirrels on earth! It is a wonder that they ever leave.
Also, how many squirrels do you have, Jackie??!! Good God!
I give them sunflower seeds since I read on orphanedwildlife.com that it is a good staple food for them. Maybe I should try cutting down and see if it calms little Babe's nerves, though...

Oh my gosh Jackie,
I feel overwhelmed feeding my four. Do you have room in your frige for yours and Freds food? That spread just cracked me up. Looks like a pilgrims thanksgiving feast.
My kids get bountiful plates of veggies in the am with squirrel block. No fruit, juvies as well as adults. Then a nut (almond or hazelnut) as an after noon snack if they have eaten well. Then an early dinner 6:00 pm of more veggies. If they have eaten that they get a raspberry or piece of fruit with yogurt or a momma 2 boo ball with yogurt. When they go to bed I place a squirrel block in their clean plate for early morning wake up while I get family out the door for school and work. My monsters wake up hungry and it is a good way for them to eat a HHB first thing.
Funny how every squirrel has favorites. Some of mine will never touch a mushroom. Others love only pea pods. Peanut hates avacado. Can you imagine a squirrel that hates avacado? Paco could live on avacado alone and really does not like pea pods. All of them love baby lettuces. Butter and bibb and such. All time favorite in this house is raduicio (spelling)
Also love dandelion greens. Maybe once a month they get a tiny piece of corn and a sunflower seed but also read not good for them.
Three stores, three times a week at least. I cannot imagine Jackies shopping trip:thinking
I took most of my diet from everyone here on TSB and use the squirrel pyramid of foods on Henrys web site religiously and also 4sqwerlz expert advice.
Blood work on my two adults show calcium levels right on the money. Peanuts very recently done.
All the best to you in this feat to keep them healthy:multi

Thank good ness for the farmers market...I pay a fraction and buy fresher than the grocery stores could ever provide..
most times the cilantra still has dirt on the roots...parsley too, right out of the fields!
I buy cases of some stuff that are staples, often times saving way more than half....
:alright.gif also on saturday I was given two cases of grapes and 1/2 bushel of okra No chrage... for the sqs!:Love_Icon
There are two markets, one is a street market where you can buy one'sies and then the real market where everything is sold in cases...bulk.
Fred and I do eat/share sq food, we often have the best veggie soup you can imagine...
The market is cool too, an atmosphere all it's own...there are chefs and restraunt/produce stand owners squeezing all the mangos and avacodos...
bickering and bargaining...
the big market is open 2am to 10 am...and the street market starts at light of day...
yes, big savings and extra fresh!:wott
Domestic chestnuts are just in and pecans {new crop} by friday!
Roasted no salt peanuts went up $1 on 50 pounds, first increase in 20 months. $45 for 50lbs.
I suggest everyone look in the yellow pages for wholesale produce...
I feed salad only once a day...:peace
I have to juggle feeding bowls as it is...washing them after formula and then again after salads etc...I need more crocks and a maid!:D
Sq Central babies look good!:thumbsup and are happy and healthy!:Love_Icon

Heck, most of our trees are pretty naked! lol I don't 'love' winter, but I couldn't live without 'seasons' (I tried, moved to California....HATED IT! lol) So I will moan and complain about the cold, but it just makes me appreciate it when it gets warm (*which, I of course complain 'its too hot'....lol) I will check around and see what I can find.

The good old Flea Market (who would of thought) - guess I better start taking my mother there on Friday mornings when she wants to go.

Babe is actually seeming less anxious over the last few days. I almost totally cut out sunflower seeds, but at the same time I have also started to do night time cuddling sessions again, which he LOVES. He loves to be cuddled and petted more that the others do, but is usually too nervous to enjoy it unless I get him when he is sleepy ;). I think he just has big feelings, you know. I certainly know what that is like :/
So it is one or the other or both, but Babe is definitely feeling much less anxious and panicky. I guess I will reintroduce sunflower seeds at a later date to see if that is truly the culprit or if he was just needing more cuddles. Thanks for the good advice, Jackie :)

After seeing all that food for the squirrels one has to wonder if they even have money left over to feed the humans with... :rotfl :rotfl :poke :rotfl
Not as much money as we would like left over for sure. Next pic I take should be of my re-frige.
My family jokes and says.... When I die, I wish I could come back as one of Momma's squirrels.:D
Whoops I think a little jealousy there. :thinking

I know, that was so cute :) They were all really hungry and just leaped off of my shoulder at once to eat :D I guess it is like Mugzeema was saying, I am lucky to have such agreeable squirrels to be my first ones. I certainly was not ready for them at all. Rifa just showed up in my yard needing to be saved, and then I just wanted to get the one littermate for her.... But ready or not, right? In all, I really hope they won't be my last squirrels, either. They have completely captured my heart :) Don't get me wrong, though, they are still monsters ;). I am wondering if my hanging plants will ever recover... :shakehead
