Sorry for a newbie question, but I have read that each was bad with the other ok from different places.
So, is it ok to give my boy green or brown acorns?? :)
Thank you so much in advance!

Bump....:poke
I have quite the bounty outside and would love to give a few to my boy for practice...
Which are ok, green or brown??
I am hoping some rehabbers or experts could advise me. :)

Either. Just make sure that they JUST fell off the tree, don't give them any that have been on the ground for a while. They have a lot of moisture inside and will grow mold (aflatoxin) like peanuts do that make them ill. But good fresh acorns off the tree are the healthiest nut you can give them as far as the calcium/phosphorus ratio is concerned.
I gather them up (I have so many oaks), toss any that have holes or cracks, wash them in dishwashing soap and watr and dump them out on a towel ovenight to dry; then into a baggie and into the freezer. Little lad will have fresh acorns all winter!
NOTE: The tannins in the acorns will turn their pee pinkish. Don't freak out - it isn't a urinary tract infection! My wilds are gorging on them right now and my deck has what looklike blood spatters all over it - it is SQUIRREL PEE!

Thank you CritterMom!
Funny about the pink pee! I'll gather, clean, and store a bunch for my baby.
He sends a little squirrely kiss of thanks to you, :Love_Icon
and a bow to Mr. Cool, Mr. P! :bowdown
