Hi everyone,
Peanut has the runs! He had been doing great, hair, eyes open, ears up, walking about a little, still small, only 85 grams, he looks tiny... anyway...We think he is about 6-7 weeks old now and I offered him some baby applesauce with his formula, very, very little and he loved it! I was hoping it would help get him eating a little more as he only takes about 3 cc per feeding, he is on FV, waiting for the 20/50 now.
So now he has had runny poo for day 2 and will not eat much at all, does take pedialight? I worry because he is so tiny he can't have this for long!
A local vet, also a rehabber, told me that it's okay to give Immodium MD for infants, so we have been giving him that, but only twice so far and no change!
So, aside from yogurt, is there anything else I can do? His poo is very pale, almost white, from very runny to very soft and smelly....
Any advise :dono

Sounds like the poo is formula rich even though he is not eating much. That cannot be good. It means that his intestines are so disturbed that he cannot digest and also that he is feeling quite badly (or he would be eating better). Probably some rehydration is in order with the lack of fluid intake and the fluid loss of the runs. Natural yogurt (congealed with bacterial culture and no chemical additives) can help populate the intestines with beneficial bacteria. Organic would be best for such an upset tummy, if you can get it. If you give yoghurt, dilute it either in pedialyte or add to the formula. Don't heat a yoghurt mix too much so as to preserve the beneficial bacteria.
A couple of Pedialyte feeds are in order to clean Peanut out. Make sure your formula is always fresh. Toss anything after 24 hours old. Good luck--Oh, a little extra love (if that's possible) never hurts either.:D

I found some Agrimycin-343 at the feed store, those people were so helpful! Anyway, its for chickens but the man there felt it safe for squirrels as well.... anyone? This is for the possibility that he has a nasty bug.... maybe!
He also gave us some powdered probios... said to give it with warm water.... but how much! He is about 85 grams so.... it even says Rodent on it! I just want him to feel better in a hurry...:Love_Icon

He is better, poo is soft, not runny and he ate again:flash3 !
I had stopped vanilla jogurt in his FV during feeding and once I added it back.... he went nuts! Maybe he is spoiled... :sanp3
Apple sauce, he only had it once, less than half a cc, he liked it, a lot but I knew not to give him too much, good thing too! Kiwi, our other one that left us, no doubt for some girl squirrel fluzzy :shakehead, he loved it as well but he was older already and it was always the baby one!
I had not given him the anti-biotic yet, wanted to see if anyone here had heard of it or talk to the local rehab guy here, he is out for the week, our luck :soapbox but the powder probiatics I got at feed store are good to go, checked them out online and it says for rodents so.... he is getting some of that with warm water...
He is active again, thank goodness and I've changed his feeding times from every 4 hours to every five, with his night being like 6 1/2! No more middle of the nights.... yeepy... I was beginning to show some wear&tear:wahoo ..
As always... soooo glad you all are here.... I will keep you posted...:thankyou

If you give yogurt, dilute it either in pedialyte or add to the formula. Don't heat a yogurt mix too much so as to preserve the beneficial bacteria.
Please Don't mix yogurt with pedialyte!!!:nono Pedialyte is for hydration! Yogurt can be added to your formula.
If you are mixing
2TBS Water
1TBS Formula
1/3 tsp of Yogurt. You also can give Plain yogurt. Using a 1cc syringe about 1/4 cc. I am glad Peanut is doing a little better. Keep up with the yogurt / Probiatics.
I always mix yogurt with my formula until I wean my babies. Then I will mix a little FV powder with the yogurt and give it to them.:thumbsup
:thinking The Antibiotic that we suggest for Squirrels are Baytrill and SulfaTrim. Why are you wonting to give AB to the Babies? :dono

Peanut is doing great! Poo is back to normal, still don't know if I could have used those antibiotics... anyone hear of them?:thinking Its all I could get my hands on in case it was a tummy bug but.... he is over it and I'm sure it was the baby applesauce :nono
Anyway, will post this elsewhere too but yesterday I got another little one :bowdown This one is about... 10 weeks I think, maybe more! I will sent pictures..

Ok, what gives..:soapbox
Every-time I get Peanuts poo straightened out, he is back to normal.... Its back!
If he has good poo in the morning, he will have runny poo at night! If he has good poo at night, he will have runny poo all over his cage and himself in the morning :shakehead
The poo is a vanilla creamy color, off white if you will and smells pretty bad too! My husband and daughter don't think it smells that bad but... it's bad as far as I'm concerned! He has had three quick baths, he loves by the way... falls asleep!:rotfl
Nothing changes, his diet is the same, amount the same......FV
pro-biotic, Yogurt, pedialight.... he is active, fun, loving.... cutes thing you've ever seen, yes he is :Love_Icon he gets lots of love and cuddles which he enjoys so.... what is up :poke

sounds like it is more than just a diet thing..he must have some parasite activity if you have done all that has been mentioned.
But here's my thoughts..
Clean utensils are a must
fresh formula, do not reuse or reheat...
do not microwave the formula, float it in a small container in a hot mug of water that has been microwaved
no stress..meaning no loud tv, barking dogs, no children.
keep him warm at all times, especially after baths...anything that makes him work harder than normal is stressful, stress causes bad poops too.
if esbilac, that maybe the issue.
not sure what that agri stuff is..but until someone confirms it is sq friendly, I would not use it...chickens have totally different digestive tracks than sq mammels. I would recommend you start this baby on good and proven ABs...albon is used by some, I use SMZ-TMP for cochidia...
If that doesn't clear it up...I move to Giardia meds, flagyl/metronidazole.
In Texas you need a rehabber or an extra friendly/reasonable vet for wildlife.
You can ask around your circle and see if anyone with pets has these meds or also Baytril...
that's my advise...:tilt
Remember the cillans are not advised for sqs.
I doubt you can buy anything worth a hoot from feed store:peace
WE have alot of members in Texas, would you consider handing him to someone else?:Love_Icon That has vet contacts?
Maybe a member with meds can share..:dono
Good luck..
for now; dilute the formula and make sure it is not cold, must be 99-102* and swutch between hydration and formula...
You must get this under control asap...having diarreha is not good, it too is stressful...

:thinking
your water??
maybe try distilled water, especailly if you have a well...?
and there is the possibility of lactose intolerance...
a fecal would detect what bugs if any are causing this..
if you have a domestic pet vet, maybe you can take yuckies to him, asking for a fecal for your BITING pet rat!:D

Ok, formula is always fresh, heated in small bottle floating in hot water than put in syringe so we are good on that!
Water, nope, have filtered water.
Stress, no, none of that, we keep him very quite and warm as well! He is not liking the new squirrel but they do not interact! He does however seem to smell him on me, even after hand washing, shirt change... and doesn't like it, it seems :nono !
He gets very agitated, don't want to eat, is all over the place so.... I no longer feed him first, I had done that so I could spent more time with him, he is the baby after all and my first this season:Love_Icon ! I feed Peanut first now and that has settled that!
Poo of course was issue before that! Tonight he didn't want to eat hardly anything, poo was soft, not runny but smelly still!
Did find a wildlife friendly vet and will try go see him this Tuesday, day off! I hope to get an answer than as I have followed all advise and still can't seem to get it to stop:dono !
Don't worry, I will not ever give meds unless I know they are ok :nono
