Down the street from me. someone had big machinery come in and simply snap off all the trees at the base. Clear cut the lot. They did this on friday, and then left for the holiday weekend. The trees are just all laying there. I could not even sleep thinking about any squirrel nests that may have been in those trees with babies this time of year. I went there yesterday AM to have a look around, but it is real mess. I did try to climb through some of the mess to look, but it is very hard to see any nests. They will be cleaning this uf on Tuesday I am sure as there are massive chippers and cutting equipment left there. Not so sure how to rescue anything from the rubble.

oh no...please go back...they will start crying today...
have you seen any mommas removing babies?
are there trees close enough that the mommas can relocate their babies to new nests?
what a disaster:shakehead
my heart hurts...

Well, the piles of trees are HUGE!!! I well be climbing through mounds of trees. I wonder if I just sit and listen for those despirate baby screaches to the mommas?. They did the cutting late around 4 PM. I am going back right now. I bet any mommas would have been killed in this mess, but babies may have survived the fall if they had a good nest. Not sure where to begin, it is about 3 acres of mess.

I just got back. I went with my animal loving son. We searched and just listened a lot. I am very familar with the squirrel mamma call. I did not hear any. I did climb through some of the downed tree tops. I did not see any nests. I did not see any frantic moms looking for babies either. We were there looking for about an hour, Most of the trees were swamp maples. There was only one large oak, so it was not great squirrel food territory. We ended up on an adjacent side street, where there were some huge oaks either tagged for cutting or taged to keep. Needless to say I did not seen any dreys or holes for winter homes. All I can hope for is that this was not the best place for a nest, and maybe there were none. I have laods of swamp maples in my own yard and they do not attract squirrels. I guess I did my best with two trips there to look and listen. I am not sure any babies would still be alive come tuesday. I could ask the workers to call me should they find anything while chipping the mess.
PS. I do keep supplies on hand at all times and I am pretty good at raising baby squirrels. I know the rules,,FV, only 1CC O ring style, slow is better, keep them warm, tickle their privates until you see pee and poop. I have all this stuff on hand and I am ready an waiting. My husband thinks I am insane. He wonders why I do this to myself, as I cry each time I release them as grown-ups, but for some reason I am so addicted to them!!!! squirrels are amazing!
I went to a flea market this am with hubby. someone had a teacup chiwawa dog ( I dont know how to spell it). It was already three months old, but very, very tiny. The fellow told me they simply do not get much bigger. he breeds them for how tiny they stay. Of course the little guy was adorable! I told my husband I wanted to take him home with me. You know what he said? " oh you are just trying to fill your " squirrel" needs!" because this little dog looked like a squirrel! UMMMMMM he may have been right!
Anyway, I live in mass. If anyone needs help with any babies. I am more than willing to take them.
