Hey all! I just aquired a baby squirrel this past Thursday. I think that she was ran out of her nest by ants. She had about 6 bites on her and now they are all healed up! She was pink but she had no cord, so I am guessing ( by what I have read on the net ) that she is a little over a week old. She is starting to get darker now with a little fur :)

I started her out on Pedialyte for the first 8 hours then got some Colostrum Supplement. Thats what they had at my feed store. Then I read some where to feed Goats milk and thats what she has had for about 4 days. I have been feeding her every 2 hours around the clock with an eye dropper, she is taking 1cc sometimes 1 1/2cc.

Today she is getting a little dry skin, she does not seem dehydrated so what could this be, and what can I do?

Is what I have been doing ok? Am I doing the right things?
I have fallin in LOVE :Love_Icon with this little baby Girl! ( Pearl )

If there is anything that I am doing wrong tell me please! I will do anything for this little Squirrel! :thankyou PTS!

:Welcome :Welcome

You are doing a good job so far. I would offer some suggestions.

Are you stimulating your baby after each feeding to help her pee and poop?

I don't think you needed the colostrum because she got that during her first week with her Mom but I am sure it didn't hurt.

I also think Fox Valley is the best formula for raising baby squirrels.
You can order that from 4Squirrels. She has Henry's Healthy Blocks.

You can check this site out too for more info.

Hi there.

You did right to give her Pedialyte at first. I don't know about colostrum supplement, but now she needs formula.

Also, make sure you put a heating pad (the kind without the auto-shutoff) under half the container she is in. As far as dry skin, if she's in a cardboard box, that can cause dry skin. A plastic container is better.

The goats milk is okay for a day or so, but does NOT have nearly enough fat for a baby squirrel. You'll need to get some Fox Valley 32/40 formula for her.

Hopefully a rehabber will be along shortly to help.

Yes, you absolutely need a commercial formula, and the Fox Valley is the way to go. It can be purchased through either www.foxvalleynutrition.com or www.henryspets.com. Both can also supply you with 1cc syringes and nipples, which you need. If the heating pad WITHOUT the auto off is a problem, Henryspets has those as well; so does CVS.

Until you can get the formula, you need to boost your goats milk. Please buy a small carton of heavy whipping cream (17% milkfat) and some yogurt - best choice is full fat, not low or no fat yogurt. I use Yoplait Yobaby, made for infants, sold in little teeny six packs. Here is the recipe:

Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup yogurt

Mix well and keep in a covered plastic or glass container in the refrigerator. Replace after 48 hours.

I can't urge you strongly enough to get the Fox Valley - you want the Fox Valley Day One 32/40. Don't get the 20/50. The recipe above will begin to get some of the fat and protein she needs, plus the probiotics in the yogurt, but the FV is absolutely the way to go.

If you post a little more detail about where in TX you are, we have many board members there and you may have someone close who can help you.

Also, you may want to move to "The Nursery" - this "room" is sort of an introduce yourself room and I don't want your questions to get ignored!

And oh, yeah, we want pictures. Always pictures. :thumbsup

Thank you all so much for your help!

I have her in a box on a heating pad half on half off. I will get a plastic one asap! I have it on a timer so its on 15 min. and off 15 min. it has been working good. I know how to do the poo/pee thing, lol I raised 4 kittens :D and they had to have that done to. I just ordered from FV 32/40 this morning. He is so so so very nice! It should be here Fri. Sorry about putting this here. I will put all my other on the New Born board :):thankyou
