On Friday, we found a tiny wounded grey squirrel. It was 1-2 weeks old, and had wounds in its flesh on its head mostly, and was bleeding from the nose and mouth. We took it in and I was not expecting it to live.
I addressed its wounds, warmed it, cared for it, fed it about every three hours with Ebsilac, and lo and behold, she is doing well. The apparent skull fracture seems to have healed, the wounds are healing, she is vigorous and growing.
Well, we only have red squirrels here in our foresty yard, a grey adult just showed up last week, but I have not seen it since we found the baby.
Here are my issues:
I am trying to find out if it is legal that I even have this animal and are caring for it. I think we could rehab it and relelease her to our yard, but A) Would she get along with the red squirrels, and B) Will she have head injury issues?
I finally found a wildlife person nearish to me, and will call her today. I feel kind of stupid that we didn't do it when we found her, and I really don't want to hear "well you should have called now it is too late" and I also don't want to get into trouble with legalities.
I am happy that she is doing well, and we have loved her and cared for her well.
What do you think I should do now?

Hi!
very few states are legal to own a sq and have vet care...however I am not sure about Oregon...
TSB does have members in your state , hoping someone will have more answers!
Glad to hear your little one is gaining!:alright.gif
We love pics!
We recommend Fox Valley formula...
Here is a link to great baby info!

Thank you, Jackie!
If it is not legal or recommended to raise these babies yourself, how is it all these people on this board have squirrels!? :) Am I just confused?
I hope someone in Oregon will post a reply for me!

Another question I had...I thought babies were supposed to be born in the springtime? It doesn't seem wise to try to release her in the winter, is it weird that she was born in the fall?

:D Outlaw I can do...
I am afraid of getting in trouble, though. What if someone I know turns me in? Do you try to keep it under wraps ... I don't know what I should do. :dono :Love_Icon
I am just pretty sure it would be euthanized if I turned it over.
I am trying to post a picture but I get an error message that they are too big. I will try to convert one later.

Can someone in Oregon PLEASE help me decide what to do, where to find regulations, who to contact.... etc.
I am really torn as to risking getting in trouble vs. turning over this poor thing who will probably get put down. :shakehead

Not really much in the way of trouble for you - it is usually the squirrel that winds up in the trouble. You just need to keep them quietly without everyone knowing.
May I suggest you put a post in the Non-Life Threatening section titled something like "Need help with baby squirrel in Oregon" so the people who need to see it, do.

I can tell you it is illegal to have a wild squirrel in the state of Oregon. You can apply for a permit, but you must agree to have the squirrel neutered or spayed and if you do not agree, Fish and Game will confiscate the squirrel and euthanize it. If you do agree the permit is only good for 2 years. They do that so that in the event they change the laws regarding permits, they will know who has the pet squirrels and go round them up. Many licensed rehabbers will not rehab the Eastern Grays and Eastern Fox squirrels here because the are non-native. Fish and Game has told them they can rehab them but can't release them. At the same time they can't keep a squirrel who is healthy and releasable, so it's a catch 22. Many wildlife centers will euthanize them. Now if you're talking a Red, Flyer or a Western Gray, that's different. Wildlife centers will take those. For that reason many rehabbers in Oregon are non-licensed so they stay under the radar of the state Fish and Game folks.
Hi Jodi B :wave123

Hi Jodi, I believe Mrs. Skul and I know the same person in Portland Oregon. I've known her for a year and talk to her several times a week. She's been rehabbing for about 11 years. She's an excellent rehabber and is a very compassionate person. If you want to raise and release the baby yourself, she can help you with the steps for that or she can take the baby and care for it, either way, she's happy to help. If you want her information, please let me know. I'm posting in both of your threads hoping you'll see this. :)
