SO, Fox Valley is on it's way. Little 6-7 week old 3 oz Eastern Grey needs a diet that isn't going to bust me in the interim.

She LOVES yougurt (all natural stuff that they sell to the hippies). I picked the one with the highest fat/protein content.

She likes Esbilac, too, but won't do a bottle or eyedropper. She'll drink it out of a bowl, but last time she was coughing and sneezing and I'm sure she's going to wind up with that crap all over her insides as well as her outsides.

She likes broccoli quite a bit, too.

Yogurt/FV was recommended, but FV isn't here yet (Tuesday, presumably). So, I tried just yogurt (Brown Cow vanilla) and she doesn't breathe it, that's nice. I've got to take pictures, however, because she winds up getting it ALL OVER.

What's good, somewhat cost effective (I was just looking at the powdered stuff they sell for $20+ that I'm not going to use much of) that I can add to the yogurt to round out her diet?

Is it ok to feed yogurt like this? How much is too much? Should I let her regulate her diet, or should I limit how much of <anything> she gets? There is a ton of liquid in the yogurt, should I drain it? Should I let her wean herself if that's what she wants? Are all of these questions answered in another thread (I did search, but the results didn't really answer my questions)?

Thanks a TON!

Erik

Don't pour the liquid (whey) off the top. Mix it in
the yogurt cultures will help her adjust to the change in diet. as much as folk hate Esbilac here we are currently feeding some 20 babies Esbilac w/multimilk at the wildlife center. what you could try is rodent (rat) block soaked in water until it's crumbly and then pour formula over that. looks a bowl of cereal that's been sitting out too long. Drinking from a bowl is great! Messy but great!
we offer that with chopped fruit and veggies while feeding 5ccs formula 3-4 times a day

Drinking from a bowl is great!

I've read a lot about pnemonia and aspirating formula. Should I be less worried? My state and this species don't mix, if you know what I mean, but it being a little living thing, I'm not going to surrender it to anyone as they will just euthanize it, so a vet visit is fairly out of the question.

Hi Erik...I feed my grey her FV squirrel shake (FV+yogurt+a little honey) in a saucer, it is fairly thick so it just coats the bottom of the saucer. She licks it up without inhaling it... altho she does walk in it and sorta sling it everywhere:shakehead
I started putting her saucer in a large sterilite container...and now she can happily sling to her hearts content. After she eats i just give her a quick wipedown with a damp cloth. She is about 5 months old and still gets her FV twice a day. It is definitely worth it to avoid any illness at all costs in a less than squirrel friendly state
