View Full Version : Is Hartz milk replacement a safe alternative to Esbilac?

I found a baby Squirrel about 3 to 4 weeks old and have been trying to rehabilitate it for the past 5 days. I've heard Esbilac is the best formula to get, but its hard to find. Hartz puppy milk replacemnt seems more common. Just wondering if it's safe to use? If not, are there other more cost efficient/generic brands to use?

NO, hartz is not OK for squirrels. There is a homemade formula you can use while waiting for Fox Valley formula to come (I would highly recommend ordering fox valley formula or Zoologic 33/40 formula).
The things you will need for the homemade formula are:
Goats milk (fresh in the carton or powdered)
Heavy whipping cream (make sure it does NOT contain skim milk, should just be the fat from the milk)
yogurt (make sure it is NOT light, you want to get regular yogurt because the artificial sweetners are not good for baby squirrels)
and possibly an egg, not sure.
Someone should post the homemade recipe soon, but for now you can get the ingredients :).

I don't feed this to my baby but I saw this while messing around on the internet and was wondering if this (GME Goat's Milk Esbilac by PetAg. )was a better alternative to esbilac puppy milk.

Ditto! Nasty company.....and always has been. Even when I was a kid our vet told us to stay away from their junk.

A heads-up about Hartz; their reputation got so bad they started a new company: LM Animal Farms. Bright red bag. Watch out for it.

A lot longer then it's going to on the hartz junk ... :shakehead
We say temporary and prefer the transition to FV because FV
is specially formulated for squirrels and their complete nutritional needs.

Temporary should be no longer than 3-4 days -- the length of time it takes you to order the Fox Valley -- either from www.foxvalleynutrition.com, or www.henryspets.com -- and have it sent to you.
DIET is absolutely critical with baby squirrels. The wrong formula can and will kill them. At your babies' age you need to order the Fox Valley Day One for Squirrels, 32/40. :thumbsup

I used Hartz for two weeks before I got on this board. They survived but they were skinny until I got the Fox Valley. Now they are fat chunky butts.

Fox Valley formula turned my skinny starving squirrels into BIG HE MAN squirrels. They are doing so well. If you love your squirrel, feed Fox Valley Formula.
