Where is the best place to buy hazelnuts when they are hard to find in grocery stores during the Summer? I live in Tampa - but don't mind buying them online if need be. Thanks :)

I found shelled hazelnuts sold in the bulk bins at Whole Foods, but you will have to order the ones in the shell online. Nutsonline.com is good...

Crittermom...I too used to get my nut supplies from Nuts on Line until I found this site http://www.anuts.com/cart.php.
For hazelnuts at Nuts on Line they want $3.49 per pound and at Anuts they want $2.27 per pound. They are just as good as nuts on line, it just takes a couple of days to get them. (actually about 4 days):)

I usually get my hazelnuts at Whole Foods but they cost about $8-9 a pound, I forgot about Nancy's recommendation, I will look into that. Nancy is that price for unshelled?

Jackie in Tampa let me know about a dealer at the Hillsborough Ave farmers market that sells nuts. I just recently bought a 50 lb bag of mized nuts for $104 but he also had a 50 pound bag of hazelnuts. If I'm not mistaken, they were the same price. A 50 pound bag fills about 2.5 - 3 cat litter buckets!

they are on Hillsborough Ave, not the street market, but the big market, go thru the guard shack, last large bay door on the right!

They sell veggies 'by the case only' also...

Thanks Nancy, I am going to order 10 pounds shelled this weekend, taking shipping into account, that's still a saving of $40.

Wow - thanks. I haven't had to order any yet - I bought tons at Christmas - but P got his last shelled hazelnut yesterday so an order is in the offing.
And can I say this may be one of the worst site addresses I have ever seen? Don't say it fast...

Thanks Nancy, I just received my 10 pound order of hazelnuts (shelled) and the dark morphs must have an insider friend there at 'Anuts' because they have eating tonight like they know there is no limit :D
Anuts is the best we've found.
Buy a big box.:D

The Hazelnuts from Bairds are the best:wahoo
If you want to get some other nuts in the shell just by the pound like almonds or walnuts-Cacciatore's Italian market on Hanley has them for 2.99lb
Also there's a little fresh produce market on the corner of Casey and Gunn that have pecans(unpolished) Brazil nuts and others for 3.99lb.
They also have Leechie(did I spell that right?) nuts -which is actually a fruit and also guava fruit. I need to go pick up some leechies but I did give Squirrelis the guava fruit and some fresh figs-:wahoo she loved them
Who doesn't love a fresh fig all you Italians out there:D

So with the shipping, are these still cheaper than what you can get them for around you?

Hi Nancy, even with shipping I am saving $30-40 for 10 pounds. With shipping 10 pounds it was $60, buying by the pound cost me $90 for 10 pounds ($9 per pound) if purchased at Whole Foods and $100 ($10 per pound) if Papa Joes.
I swear yesterday they must of known about the shipment and it was left on the front porch for their little noses to sniff. I don't know about your outdoors guys but mine seem twice as hungry after and during a rain. Maybe ground is softer, so easier to bury a nut so they want to take advantage of the stuation.

Wow - thanks everyone for the info on the hazelnuts. I've got one spoiled little squirrel who wants them...or is more like demanding them - hee hee. For now I have been able to keep him happy with a replacement - pumpkin seeds. We'll see how long that love lasts, right??? I guess it's time for Mommy to get some hazelnuts or else. Thanks again for all of your suggestions.mjs

Understand your dilemma well NutmegsMommy, in the beginning I got away with peanuts, then I gave them some walnuts and once they tasted hazelnuts, they never again accepted a peanut, only the blu-jays will eat those now, even the Chippers want the hazelnuts.

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with hazelnuts, but I wanted to announce that my freezing experiment with the maple seed pods went very well. Benji and Nibbles feasted on maple seed pods last evening and they went after them with the same gusto as the fresh ones. The seed pods didn't lose their color and seemed to weather the freezing process well.

Nancy, I'm still thinking there was some kind of information leak in regards to the nut shipment. Has Jeffrey been looking over your shoulders lately? If you wouldn't mind, can you check his sent mail for anything forwarded to Nick@thenuthouse.com
Thanks.
