Here are a couple links to rehabbers, listed by state. They are broken down into two lists, one for states A-M (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contactA.htm) and one for states M-Y (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contactN.htm).

Island Rehabber posted this link in another thread and it's just too good not to add in this area. This link (http://www.wildlife-international.org/EN/public/emergency/emergencyrehab.html) allows you to locate rehabbers in your "Country", "Providence/State", and "Town". It's awesome! :thumbsup3 Thanks Island Rehabber!

That link is part of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC, home page www.iwrc-online.org (http://www.iwrc-online.org)). There is also a USA-only National Wildlife Rehablitation Association (NWRA) and their website is www.nwrawildlife.org (http://www.nwrawildlife.org) -- very helpful info there as well. Happy to help!

I need a vet for my squirrels in Toronto Canada area. I don't need a rehaber I just want a vet that will see them if and when I need them. I am afraid that they either won't see them or if they do they will confinscate them. I have two squirrels that are unreleasable. They live a happy life. One is half blind and the other is a little weak in the back legs. they are not in pain. I just want to know of a vet for preventative reasons. Just in case I need them down the road. I don't want to wait until the last second to find one.

I can not get the A-M list to work right. It will show me the first three A listings but will not show me any thing else.

The N-Z work just fine for me.

I live in Florida and would like to see the list just in case I ever need it.

I there another link??

Thanks.

Thanks. I found only one, but then that's all it takes. :thumbsup

I talked to her about 4 years ago, but it was about baby opossums someone found. I had lost her number and had not thought about her at all.

I cant get the list to work for missouri either list nothing comes up for me. I live in blue springs missouri would like to find a rehabber to talk to about a few things on soft release or have them release my little one i really think she would be much better out there making her own little family than being cooped up in her cage i do let her out quite often but it just doesnt seem fair to her she is a sweet girl. i just worry about the time right now it being so close to really cold weather and all the other squirrels in our area have already gathered most of the acorns and stuff maybe waiting for spring is best now.

I've contacted them in the past and Bob Sallinger has told me they would euthanize (sp?) them as they are not native to Oregon.

:soapbox I doubt if anyone named "Sallinger" is any kind of "native to Oregon" either. Doesn't sound like a Native American name to me.......perhaps we could euthanize him too. :soapbox:madd:Cannon

It is wonderful to finally see easily accessable lists for rehabbers around our Country. I would like to add a note of caution to a members, to FIRST check with any rehabber listed here, you are not familiar with, to see if they practice euthanasia, and under what conditions that is done. Also, for those who live in our Pacific Coastal States, to ask a rehabber FIRST, if they willing to care for a Non Native Species of tree squirrel, and release it back to the wild, where it was found, or to you, if only willing to rehab it.

I have the membership directory for NWRA (National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association). This includes rehabbers from all 50 states including Canada. British Columbia,New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario,Quebec. Mexico, and overseas! surely someone here already has this! But if needed I can look up an area for any trying to find a rehabber in their area.
There is no link that I could find to share, as the book said it is published as a service to members...Hope this can help someone

You can put me on for Central Virginia, also we have a Hot line that is manned from about 8:00am - 10:00pm. That number is 804-598-8380, we all take shifts and check it anywhere from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes, Depending on the season. It also gives emergency care information as to what to do if you find orphaned or injured wifelife.

I have a ten week old baby squirrel and I need help in releasing him into the wild but not sure she is old enough. I would be soooo.. grateful for any information on how to do this or when she would be old enough.

I am finding it very difficult so take care of her as I have two dogs, four cats, and two birds as well thank god I only work part time.

We live in Montreal and have been mom and dad since she was two weeks old.

We would appreciate any information regarding the above.

I wouldn't advise you release a young one this late in the year personally. You need to find a rehabber in your area to over winter it.

Does anyone know where I would get the information on what all I have to do before I can get my licence in NV? I've looked a bunch of places and all I could find was the form to get a rehabber licence. If nobody does no problem, I have to go get my truck licensed this week so I'll stop by the Department of Wildlife Services or what ever and see if they can help me. Thanks again guys! There is good reason for not releasing grays in the Pacific Northwest. They compete with native animals, to the detriment of their populations. Same thing in England, I believe. I love squirrels as much as anyone, but they simply don't belong in some places. My specialization in grad school was invasive species, and this is a good example.

I lived in Australia for years, and non-natives there have sent some animals to extinction. Cute little bunnies were a horrible economic and environmental problem until a disease was introduced to control them.

KristiS, you replied here to a very old post (2008) but nevertheless the issue of invasive v. non-invasive will always be a sticky one amongst wildlife rehabbers. Those who are paid to manage wildlife think in terms of large populations. Those who volunteer to save individuals think in terms of....individuals. I don't believe there will ever be common ground, since I personally see most human beings here as an invasive species who should not be calling the kettle black.

Going to have to agree to disagree on this one! :grin3

Going to have to agree to disagree on this one! :grin3

Whether humans are "invasive" or not is irrelevant. No other organism introduced us to new areas: we spread all over the world by our own means. Think of it this way: what if someone introduced to the U.S. a Super Squirrel that started decimating the native squirrel population, and all those lovely grays, foxes (including my favorite, the Sherman), reds, flyers, etc. started disappearing and all that anybody saw anymore was one species, the Super Squirrel. Would you feel the same way about rehabilitating and releasing Supers?

I understand that individuals are attached to the animals they rehabilitate. Does that absolve them of responsibility to protect native squirrels? Should it matter whether they are paid or volunteers? Either way, they are managing wildlife, even if it's on a small scale. When introduced to a new urban area, Eastern Grays typically replace the natives within 5-10 years, according to the Oregon Dept. Wildlife. It only takes two to start a population!

(Should we allow Ebola to run rampant through the human population? Not worry about containment? Same sort of thing! Eastern Grays carry a virus that is deadly to reds, just one of the ways they have of outcompeting them.)

:):):):)

Careful with THAT analogy, because when the Ebola scare was going on a few months ago I was perfectly willing to revoke the visa's and never issue another to those individuals from ANY of the Ebola countries. Forever. Liberia? OUT! Sierra Leone? Buh-BYE!!! :wave123 The best way to prevent an invasive species problem is not to let it in, in the first place. Can't take that chance. :)

There are ways to prevent squirrel pox, the disease that supposedly greys have which kills reds, which is by keeping mosquito populations DOWN. Of course, we have made all the effective means of killing mosquitos illegal now, so human populations now contend with West Nile Virus and squirrel pox goes unchecked. As well as a host of other mosquito-borne viruses.

You are supporting my point! Diseases are analogous to other types of invasives. They can also travel through invasives into new populations.

Well-meaning people (and others) who release their pets, flowers, rehabilitated animals, etc. in areas where they shouldn't be create significant economic and environmental problems, and that is what Oregon regulations are trying to avoid.

We do use mosquito treatment in some areas, but it's not economically practical or environmentally sound to kill all mosquitoes. They are a significant food source for many bats, birds and aquatic animals. Some of them are pollinators. Life on Earth is one huge, immensely complex web of interactions. When one part of the web is out of balance, other parts are impacted, too. We have already messed enough with the web in deleterious ways; shouldn't we think about how to avoid making things worse?

Humans are to blame for all that's going on. We have created transportation which can bring anything around the world within hours. That includes food, clothes, building products, animals, and disease. It's just possible that a gray(s) hopped a ride and found it's way in the Pacific Northwest

If only we could pick and chose what we want and don't want.

Then the world would be perfect :thinking

Actually, both the Eastern Gray and the Eastern Fox were intentionally introduced to Oregon, both around 1920. Fortunately, they are only in urban areas...so far. In Washington, Eastern Gray and E. Fox are found in rural areas, too.

As far as rehabilitation goes, it's also a question of resources. There are limited resources to rehabilitate wildlife, and it makes sense to prioritize native species. For the same reason, I imagine most rehabilitation centers won't take stray cats, for instance.

Again, we'll have to agree to disagree. I would much prefer finding innovative ways to allow both species to exist -- or to relocate a significant number of them -- than to categorically exterminate (commit genocide) on an entire species because they came from somewhere else.

I grew up in, and live in, an intensely overpopulated, high-stress part of this country. There are a few invasive human species I would definitely like to exterminate or at least relocate because they adversely affect MY quality of life and possibly even my health. Just like your red squirrels, there. But this ain't Disney and I just have to deal with it.

I'll stop right there.

Oh my! Who's suggesting extermination? What's done is done: the non-natives are there to stay. Relocation would only be a temporary fix, and then the numbers would climb again to equilibrium levels. Oregon allows Eastern Grays and Foxes to be released unharmed, they just can't be relocated off the property on which they were found, nor can they be brought into the state. This is an effort to keep them from spreading. They can't be rehabilitated because that would mean putting resources into increasing their populations; they are obviously doing fine without the help of rehabilitation. This is an effort to allow all species to exist by trying to slow the spread of invasives into areas where natives currently reign. Why should this be discouraged? What's so wrong with it? I just don't get it. In Great Britain Eastern Grays have had a major impact on native reds, partly because mortality due to squirrel pox in grays is rare, but it's deadly to reds (there's evidence it can be spread through feeders; it doesn't need a mosquito vector). If Eastern Grays became established in wilderness areas of Oregon, they could have the same impact. It would be great if there were ways to ensure they could coexist without impacting native tree squirrel (the Western Gray, American Red and Douglas, plus the Northern Flying) populations, but it's simply not feasible.

Mortality in squirrels, as in other wildlife, is a fact of life. I have nothing against rehabilitation, but when it comes to common species it's about individuals, just as you said. I think the process of rehabilitation is good for rehabbers themselves, and of course for individual squirrels. If people start doing things like releasing animals where they jeopardize other species, though (and I'm not saying anyone here does that), it becomes a wildlife management question.

OK, I've said my piece. It's been an interesting discussion, and I hope it didn't create any hard feelings. I know it didn't for me.

Here are a couple links to rehabbers, listed by state. They are broken down into two lists, one for states A-M (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contactA.htm) and one for states M-Y (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contactN.htm).

I'm unable to pull the South Carolina rehabber list. I need a rehabber in the Gastonia area.. two 3 to 4 week old baby squirrels. some fur, eyes not open yet. Found about an hour ago, have been put in a box near where the were found. Finder will check in a couple of hours, but is interested in finding a rehabber to take the responsibility... From the pictures she sent they are healthy...

Thanks,

Then post in the help needed forum and many more people will see the thread and more to find folks that can help. :thumbsup

Edit: And it is late to be leaving babies out.. they need to be brought in for the night, kept warm and hydrated!

I live in Missouri (Columbia area) and was wondering if there were "safe" vets in the area that would treat my little buddy. He doesn't need it now but I would like to make myself knowledgeable before he needs one.

Ohio does have a list on their wildlife website that links to the wildlife rehabbers for every state. Click on your state and you will find the list of licensed rehabbers.

Is there anywhere in the Delaware area? I would love to learn how to get licensed. Or at the very least volunteer to help. I have been interested in these animals since I was very young.... I used to (this is going to sound so wrong...) carry the ones I found in the roadway home and bury them, because I felt bad they had passed away alone. I wanted them to not get ran over anymore and thought that by at least burying them, they would know someone cared. (I know, I was a strange child). lol:Squirrel

Yes a baby squirrel has found me. About 4 or 5 days ago. I weighed it thr 1st day. 100grams. Got him on Esbilac every 4 hours except during the night. I've given Henry healthy blocks yesterday and today. I would love to pass him off to an experienced rehabber. His sibling also found me but sadly passed away the next day due to my lack of knowledge of baby squirrels. I've learned so much in the last 4 days and have been diligent in Tommy's care but I want what's best for him. We have cats, kids and -30 degree weather coming up. He needs someone that can teach him to be scared of cats and predators. I would so appreciate if you could reach out to your rehabber friend.

Here are a couple links to rehabbers, listed by state. They are broken down into two lists, one for states A-M (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contactA.htm) and one for states M-Y (http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contactN.htm).

Hello. This link takes me to a "page not found" error code. I'm looking for rehabbers in the Columbus, Ohio area.

Thanks!

Louisiana is not a state that I know of any rehabbers or members. Here’s the link for the list of licensed rehabilitators. https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/assets/Resources/Publications/Wildlife_Rehabilitation/found_baby_mammal.pdf
