i just found a baby squirrel in my front yard ,its about 4-8 days old his mother left ,so now i need to take care of him
so i need to ask that since i cant feed him dairy milk what r the alternatives i can find in india??
and he is healthy i guess since he moves around quite a lot .....(and not dehydrated)-already given the solution for rehydration...
so wt all i did for him till now is
make a little box for him to stay in with shredded paper in it ...he snuggles rite into it and dissapears,
cleaned him with wet cotton
fed him some milk (dairy -diluted with water)-which i came to know should not be done so chuck it
and gave him some water to drink(with a wet cotton since i dont have a syringe ;ill get it tomorrow morning)
its summer time here...so heating pad is not needed but still placed one under his box .....
pls give me some suggestions asap as to how i should care for him
1. what to feed him (most imp)- some ppl told me to get goat milk ;so as of now im going to get it first thing in the morning ....
2. i need all the suggestions i can get
3. the baby seems healthy so ill try my level best to keep him that way ...
4 the vet near my place knowes nothing since he himself told me to feed him dairy milk
:thinking
thnx in advance

I think from what i have read about rearing baby Squirrels on this board, that goats milk is a temp substitute until you can get a formula like Fox Valley or Esbilac (but you have to add other things to that so it it doesn't give Squirrels diarrhea). The baby Squirrel section has details on what formulas and how to feed, thats what i have been reading. I am not a rehabber but a friend of mine is rearing some babies i hoped to get advice here to help her but have had no replies to my post. Must say a little disappointed but they are doing fine. I do hope you have more success. Saw the video she/he looks very sweet and tiny :Love_Icon

OK, first read the following. There is info for making a homemade rehydrating solution using only sugar, water and salt that you will need to give this baby for a while before starting on formula. Please read the following and I will retrieve the goats milk formula recipe in another response below.
Emergency Care for Baby Squirrels
Don’ts
Don’t try to feed the squirrel.
Don’t handle him more than you have to.
No loud voices, TV, music, or bright lights.
No children or pets in the same room!
1. Warm the Baby (never feed a cold squirrel!)
Quick Methods:
-Cup the baby in your hands or under your shirt next to your skin.
-Fill a plastic bottle with very warm water. Wrap in a cloth, place next to baby, and cover him. Reheat every 2 hours.
-“Rice Buddy”: Fill a sock with 1 cup of rice or dried beans and microwave for 30 seconds. Place next to baby and cover him. Reheat every 2 hours.
2. [b] Find a Box or Container[b]
A shoebox will do for small babies. A baby that can walk will need a larger box with a lid (with holes). Put a clean baby blanket, flannel shirt, or piece of fleece in the bottom of the box. No towels or terrycloth. Squirrels can get tangled in the loops. Place baby on the material and cover him with one flap. If you have a heating pad, turn it on low and place it under half of the box (not IN the box!) so baby can move away if he gets too warm. You can use the plastic bottle or rice buddy described above, but these are only temporary methods until you get a heating pad, since they must be reheated every 2 hours and won't keep baby warm all night.
NOTE: Monitor his temperature so he doesn’t chill or overheat. His feet should feel warm to the touch.
Note: If the baby is injured, is having trouble breathing, has fly eggs on his fur, or is very skinny or dehydrated, he needs emergency care by an experienced rehabber or vet.
3. Rehydrate the Baby
Most babies are dehydrated when you find them and must be rehydrated before you can feed them. Never feed formula or food of any kind to a dehydrated baby!
How to Check for Dehydration
Pinch the skin on the back of his neck. If it doesn’t spring back immediately, the baby is dehydrated. If the pinched skin stays up like a tent for more than a second, the baby is badly dehydrated. Other signs of dehydration: pale grayish gums, dry mouth, sunken eyes, whites around eyes showing, rough spiky fur, dry scaly skin.
NOTE: If baby is badly dehydrated, he will need subcutaneous fluids, which can only be given by a rehabber or vet.
[b] Supplies You Will Need: [b]
--Pedialyte (any flavor)*
--Plastic syringes (1 cc size; no needles. Ask the pharmacist to get these for you) An eyedropper can also work.
These are available at most drugstores.
*If you can’t find Pedialyte at the store, here is a recipe for homemade Pedialyte:
1 tsp salt (teaspoon)
3 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)
1 quart warm water
Mix all ingredients in warm water. Store in refrigerator.
How to Prepare the Pedialyte
Use a plastic syringe (with or without a nipple). Never use pet nursers or doll bottles. They will choke the baby. Fill a coffee mug with hot water. Fill the syringe with Pedialyte and place it in the mug for a couple of minutes. Squirt a drop on the inside of your wrist to make sure the liquid isn’t too hot. It should feel barely warm on your skin.
Proper Position
A tiny baby should be held upright in your hand. A baby with fur can lie on a flat surface on his stomach. A baby that can walk can be held upright or he can drink sitting up. Hold the syringe so the tip points UP to the baby’s mouth and the handle is down. Don’t let the baby get cold. Keep him wrapped up while he eats.
How to Feed Fluids
Place the syringe tip on the baby’s lips (from the side) and squeeze out one drop for him to taste. Don’t squirt a steady stream. Let him swallow one drop before squeezing more. GO SLOW! It sometimes takes a feeding or two for them to catch on. Hairless babies are fed drop by drop. With older babies (once they catch on) you can squeeze slowly for one second, wait for him to swallow, then squeeze more.
If fluids dribble out his mouth or come out his nose, you are going too fast. Stop and tilt the baby’s head down so the fluid drains out (support his head and neck like you would a human baby). Then wipe his nose and mouth with a tissue. Start over, slower. NOTE: There is now a chance your baby will develop aspiration pneumonia from inhaling fluid in his lungs. This is fatal. Please contact a rehabber or vet, or the people at The Squirrel Board, for assistance.

Allright, here is the recipe. You can obviously use any brand yogurt; please try to find one that is made from full fat milk, not the low fat or no fat type.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the meantime you will need to feed your baby a home-made formula, but please for the sake of the baby, do not feed this for more than 4-7 days. It's a great temporary replacer milk but it lacks certain vitamins and minerals that the babies need to thrive. This recipe will ensure that your baby will be well nourished until your order from Fox Valley arrives.
Jackie (Jackie in Tampa) has graciously offered her temporary replacement formula recipe.
Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup dannon all natural vanilla yogurt
Mix well and keep in a covered plastic or glass container in the refrigerator. Replace after 48 hours.
mayank -- pooping is good, and so is pee. Remember you have to stimulate her every time you feed her (warm water on a tissue or cloth, pat gently side to side) to do both until her eyes open a few weeks from now. Her poop will be black until she is on the formula -- then it will turn to anything from tan to dark gold in color. The goat's milk formula is much better than cow's milk and hopefully you can get Fox Valley shipped to you! A small bag (1 lb) will last a long time with only one little baby. :D
Can you call around to any veterinarians and see if anyone has any puppy milk replacer? If you can get brand names, we can probably look at the ingredients online and see if they will work.
hi mayank,
glad you saved this baby...........i have some supplies but i need to check with the experienced rehabbers first before i send them to you..........
hang in there, and do EVERYTHING the people on TSB tell you - there's no better place on earth for squirrel advice............
also, you need to update regularly, put up a pic (if you can), let us know all details of this baby -
- where he/she was found,
- how he/she appears,
- weight,
- feeding,
- peeing,
- pooping etc
we want to know everything!!!
i have shirley's lactol, and i have asked rehabbers at TSB before using this before...........but the only babies i ever used it for were very young, away from the mom for more than a week, had been fed cow's milk before i got them and then finally died..............
i didnt know much bout squirrels when i raised chickoo...........
she was raised on a combination of ragi malt (a powdered breakfast cereal rich in protein and calcium), mixed with dairy creamer (yikes!!!, i know), powdered calcium, jaggery (rich in iron), vitamins and minerals.............
later, i have given her ENSURE when she was being fussy with her eating..........
i have met a few people who have had success with ragi malt and cows milk in indian squirrels.............dunno how much i can trust their experience........
if the shirley's lactol is ok, mayank could probably find it in a pet/ vet shop tonight or i could mail him some in the am............
:Phone2 talking to nick at foxvalley,,,
he said the fat and protien are both too low...
he has 32%protien and 40% fat in his formula....
adding heavy cream will help the fat level...but not sure how to up the protien...{egg?:dono }
I will pm Leigh{4Skwerlz} about the vitamins...I have no clue, but that D3 4000 units sounds scarey, but I have no info on sq nutrition levels...:dono
Nick said it is better to order big amount from him, the expiration date currently being sold is Nov 2011,,,in the freezer or fridge will add shelf life.
He said buying one pound is expensive after customs and shipping!
His email address is NKLC@aol.com...
hi,
i dunno if mailing or shipping anything across will be a good idea...........it just wont get to mayank soon enough............
personally (though i have ZERO experience), i prefer the homemade goats milk recipe to buying and feeding something substandard here in india..........
i once had a very sweet and well-meaning rehabber send me homemade squirrel blocks through some kinda "express mail" for chickoo................they reached me mouldy and spoilt after ONE MONTH..............do not underestimate the indian postal service!!! (the rehabber then sent me raw materials to make the blocks myself - they also took a month to get here!!- i could not get natural whey protein in india - believe it :))
:thumbsup I used the goats milk recipe for years on many baby sqs...
just spoke to mayank on the phone.........
he has started on the goats milk recipe (goats milk plus cream plus yoghurt).........
does anyone know whether it can be started right away or should we dilute first and then increase gradually to full strength?
baby seems active, pees and poops.............
the only cause for concern - baby feels cold to touch when he picks her up for feeding.............have asked him to turn up the heat on the indigenous heating pad (its a sauna belt, used for weight loss!), and provide warm fleece and a rice buddy............
I would dilute it at first just to make sure it is being well tolerated. Also, please never feed a cold baby. It needs to be warm to the touch, and any way to attain an even temp needs to be done.
Jackie in Tampa
05-19-2010, 11:11 AM
I would dilute it 1/2 first feeding...make sure it is warm, but not hot...
BUT FIRST
keep that baby warm...if he is cool/cold...do not feed...system will shut down if too cold, nothing will digest...get the baby warm...
fill a jar with warm/hot water, wrap in cloth
rice buddy
rubber glove full of warm water
heating pad
whatever it takes....
you are giving him great advise...
have him ck for dehydration also...rehydrate if needed first.
Over a 24-36 hour period go from 1/2 to full strenghth gradually.
Remind him to stimulate baby sq each time...
if poops are absent for 24 hours...that's ok, sometimes it takes awhile for the new formula to be eliminated.
sending good vibes to new baby!:Love_Icon
mayank, this is very important (like i told you on the phone)!!!
i would suggest go slow with the feeding.............
1. wait till she is warm first - dont feed till she is warm
2. give her 0.5 cc of dilute goats milk recipe (can dilute with rehydration solution or plain water) - dilute 1:4 or even 1:8 initially
3. stimulate her to pee and poop
4. keep warm
5. feed again after a couple of hours with the dilute recipe
6. stimulate
7. keep warm
and so on...............
maybe if she is peeing and pooping fine, by tomorrow we can switch to 1:2 or 1:4 dilution depending on what we decide to start with...........
can someone clarify initial dilution, and with what? (water or homemade pedialyte).............also, frequency of feeding please!
mayank, i forgot to ask you this - does anyone know where the nest was???
this baby's brothers and sisters may be in need of your attention.........
Jackie in Tampa
05-19-2010, 11:27 AM
guessing again!
my guess is 1-2 ccs every two to three hours round the clock...
remember to feed holding baby upright, never tipped back and go
S L O W !
baby must be warm...feeding cold will kill him...he will not starve to death...so warm is also key!
ok so i shall start from the begining -
her mother died ,i found her a few hours after she was orphaned ,
iv posted a video of her so pls take a look @ it ill post some pics asap ,
initially i fed her dairy milk (about 2 feedings),then stopped when i came to know its bad for her ,i found her on 18/05/2010 ,its now 19/05/2010 (just over 24 hrs have passed me taking care of her )
i think she pee's and poops @ the same time - its colour is black (poop),the pee is quite less so hard to tell which colour it is ,
i rehydrated her and started her on the goat milk formula mentioned above .....
about .5 cc per feed ....
shifted her from a plastic box to a well ventilated cardboard box with cotton cloth and shreded paper in it .....
made a rice in the sock thing for her (rice buddy i guess?)
saw her sleeping with her face burried into it .....(the heating pad i got not working now...)
chickoo
heat is a must!
and it needs to be consistant...
can you get another heating pad...some have automatic shut off...try to find one that stays on until you turn it off manually.
Please find one, it is seriously important...
the rice buddy will need to be reheated every couple hours for two months...:shakehead
cardboard may dehydrate/dry her skin out.
how often are you feeding her?
You can help with warmth by wrapping her in cloth while feeding...
Did a quickie analysis of Lactol vs. Esbilac. Seems like when diluted 2:1, if you substitute 12 grams of water (2 1/2 teaspoons) with 2 teaspoons of egg yolk (U.S. teaspoons, not U.K.), it bumps the fat/protein up just right. Calcium and Vit D are still a little low. Hope this helps.
Dilute 50/50 at first, then work up to full dilution within 24-36 hrs.
Dilute with PLAIN WATER.
If baby still appears to be dehydrated, you can alternate - a feeding of formula, a feeding of rehydration fluid. Do not give the rehydration fluid as the recipe says for more than 24 hours. If he is still dehydrated, make a fresh batch WITHOUT the salt - just sugar water, basically, and use that to alternate with the formula feedings.
3 hours sounds ok to me............but im not the expert!!!
r u feeding her the full strength goats milk recipe or the diluted one???
i personally prefer the earlier plastic box (in a quiet dark place) with a soft warm cloth/ fleece blankie, and lots of heating devices...........the shredded paper and cardboard seem very dehydrating............ (its the peak of summer in india now............temperatures will be hovering around 40 deg celsius)..............the baby can lose water because of the ambient heat, although i did tell mayank earlier that she would still not be able to maintain body heat without added help (rice buddies, heating pad etc)................even though its summer!!!
mayank has an air-conditioner in his house..............would she be better off in there???
thoughts on this please............what do you guys think???
:Welcome I feed all my babies every three hours around the clock. Until they open their eyes. Maybe you can put her in a pouch inside your shirt and take her with you.Your body heat will keep her warm that way you don't have to worry about her getting to cold,and hungry.I carried a small thermos with the formula and the syringes will fit in your pocket.No one has to know,I took my babies into restaurants and everything.I was never caught.:wave123
If Fox Valley is way too expensive how about adding Brewers yeast to shirley's lactol since it's readily available? BY does have protein plus other additional vitamins and calcium. That being said, I need to carefully read the label in the event there are elements that would counteract the absorption of calcium. I believe we were able to find Brewers yeast in Delhi. Just a thought--tho the good folks here at TSB seem to have things under control. Name yet? I'm so glad you found this baby. I fell in love with Palm Squirrels when we were in India. Didn't know what they were till I med Chickoo.
I noticed that your feeding stringe was sticking...it is a disposable, if you put a drop of vegetable oil on it before you feed each time it will slide better.:thumbsup
The better syringes have O-rings and not big black tips on the plunger, I guess they are hard to find where you are.
You are doing great!:bowdown
a doubt - she's eating .5 cc feed per feeding but she's not pooping much ......??
y is it so and her abdomen has expanded width wise ??? is that normal ...
she's responding well
initially she was a little reluctant to take the feed but now she's become quite comfortable and in a hurry to gobble it all up .....though i try to give it @ a slow pace (drop by drop)
You may need to stimulate her to poop for a lot longer than you are - it can seem like FOREVER sometimes.
If her stomach is expanding (and very rigid) you have to be careful of bloat - which can kill.
A pic would really help. Their tummies can fill with gas - like a human child - and you need to get the gas and poop out before giving more food. So stimulate, stimulate, stimlate. If she is bloated - and like I said, a pic would help us - you may need to soak the lower half of her body in warm water while you stimulate. You gotta get it out that end before adding more to the other end!
are you giving full strength formula yet?
stimulation takes time and patience............keep at it........
are the poops solid??...........what colour?
does she feel toasty warm when you pick her up?
you could also fill up a hot water bag (the rubber ones) and keep it under or next to her box........
I am so glad you took her with you, and you are very smart to give her hydration on a hot day! At her age, she really cannot go more than a few hours without formula or, at least, some hydration fluids.
When they are on formula, poops are typically orange - to yellow - to tan in color. If her poops get very light or mushy, you are overfeeding. Even though sometimes she poops on her own, which is good, always make sure you stimulate her after every feeding. I do this until about a week or so after their eyes open -- which is at 4-5 weeks old.
ok
today was a very bad day .....
i had to go out with my family and some guests had also come over .....fed her @ 8 am ,12 am then a long break of 7 + hrs and when started feeding her the syringe jammed and splatered all over .....+ to make things worse i ran out of feed .....
as of now i have the goat milk(just got it fresh as i knew it was running out ) but no yogurt and cream ....
so i fed her the rehydration fluid(salt+sugar) for now
so question is can i feed her plain goat milk (i gues i can and will do that if i dont get a reply in 1 hr)
or
is the yogurt and cream very necessary(both r home made and will b ready by tomorrow morning,its 8:45 pm rite now.....)??????????
go ahead and give her the plain goat's milk, mayank -- she needs her nourishment. You might give her an extra feeding of just hydration fluid a few hours later, because she went so long without anything today. :)
Once they open their eyes, they should start to get high quality rodent block to nibble on (it satisfies nutritional needs once they wean from formula). I assume palm squirrels are similar in this respect to ours.
has her diet changed?
anything new? friut?
different water? formula?
clean all feeding utensils well
keep her hydrated, dehydration is hard to reverse...
sometimes overfeeding can cause diarehha, feeding the 5-7% body weight rule is advised.
Is pooh stinky, could milk have gone bad...
just throwing out some ideas..
first, give her some rehydration fluid and also some yoghurt (curd)- you can sweeten it a little if she does not want it plain...........it will help with the diarrhea..........
second, go slow with the formula............wait for the diarrhea to subside............carefully check if there is anything wrong in the chain of events from the udder of the goat to your baby's mouth................that includes vessels, storage, cleaning technique etc.............buy a ton of syringes and change them frequently.............its very hard to clean those plastic syringes completely..............
third, please start a thread on her diarrhea in the emergency section.............i lost all the babies i ever rehabbed to diarrhea.............and i know it can be a killer.............
mayank if you can get the equivalent of Kaopectate at your local pharmacy, you can give her one little drop -- it can work wonders. and 1 more thing
i read that vr supposed to give them squirrel blocks once there eyes open
since by that time upper and lower incisors r out
but in doobie's case
only lower incisors r there and upper ones r barely visible .......
+ i made some home made blocks and she hates them ....
she ate some tomato once and when i fed it to her again she dident seem to eat it
so i think i should kee her on formula for some more time before i introduce it to her diet ....and in the mean time ill add the vitamins to her feed itself(since its in powder form )
so opinions ppl??
rozdow
06-14-2010, 07:48 AM
It is probably not too early to introduce the blocks (so she can get used to the smell & "feel" of them). In the beginning, they just chew on the blocks without eating much. Over time, they eat more & waste less. I don't know if 4SKls (sp?) ships her blocks to your location. If the formula you are giving her is nutritionally balanced, I wouldn't think that she would need added vitamins, but check with the more experienced folks here on the board.
06-14-2010, 10:55 AM
hi mayank,
good to hear doobie is doing alright.............yes, you should probably leave a block in her cage all the time...........she will initially ignore it, then nibble, play and shred it............eventually she will learn to eat it as she weans off the formula...........
p.s. where did you get the 100% whey protein?............can u let me know brand, manufacturer and price, cos i cant seem to find it in my city.............im still relying on the whey protein a rehabber sent me from the U.S., and i will be running out of it soon.............
If your squirrel needs immediate attention, use the emergency forums, to get attention to the rehabbers.
We love pics...
What formula are you feeding?
Yes a cage is recommended:)
:wave123 Is it real hot there? If so,You may want to try and cool her down a little bit ,I put Ice cubes in a deep lipped plate and let mine play in it,and I give them frozen fruit and they seem to like that and it cools them some,and they love to play with ice on the floor.:thinking :thumbsup
yeah its over 40 degree celsius here ....
she starys indoors mostly only take her out for an hour max(in shade)
any ways ....maybe it was because i added vitamins to her feed(goat milk)
so removed it now
and issent she supposed to have hair on her arms ??
she has it everywhere except her arms (very less hair there)
could it be a problem ??
:grouphug Well Mayank I wish I knew more about the little palm squirrels but I don't,gray squirrels and Flying squirrels all have hair on their arms so I would assume that the Palms would too.My best guess would be a lack of certain vitamins,or too much of one type or another,or hair is not done coming in.I'm just guessing,please hang in there and maybe someone with more experience will help.You can do a Private message to someone,Like Chickoo that knows more about this breed of squirrel and you should get an answer sooner.I'm sorry,I hope this does you some good.:grouphug
how is doobie now?.............still panting and lethargic?..............are you giving her anything besides formula?...........maybe if its hot weather out there, she may need a feed or two of rehydration fluid or plain water...........can the rehabbers help out on this?
mayank90
06-17-2010, 09:03 AM
she's fine now ...yes i give her water in between meals ....
chickoo
06-18-2010, 03:46 AM
keep a shallow dish of water in her cage at all times..........that way she will learn to drink from a dish eventually, plus she wont be thirsty............just my suggestion :D
When she takes formula does she get it on her arms or belly? Dried formula will strip their fur right off and irritate the skin -- we call it "milk burn". Otherwise, it could be due to a parasite or mite -- is she scratching more than usual?
hmmm...I'll keep thinking....:thinking
in the meantime I've moved your thread from Emergency Life-Threatening to Non-Life Threatening. :thumbsup Fur loss can be due to many reasons so we'll just have to keep working on it...
thanks .....
well i'd like to post an update on doobie ...
she is now 8-9 cm in length(excluding tail)
eating hard stuff like almonds(soaked in water)..
peanuts
cashews
home made paratha
etc
and is decreasing her milk intake (once a day )-she wants solid food now
im cleaing her with wet cotton once a day just in case the hair problem is due to something.
she's very vigilant even around me .....very rarely relaxed except when no 1 is looking @ her ....
any ways since she is over 10 weeks old now ...when can i release her (i never planned on keeping her as a pet i just found her coincidentally)
In my opinion you should wait until she completely rejects formula and can crack the native fruits and nuts in your area. Once she's able to do that (maybe 2-3 weeks from now?) you should put her cage outside in a safe area for a few days so she will get used to the sounds and smells of outdoors. Then, open the door and -- :wave123 :D
:thumbsup So happy to hear she is doing so very well.Please listen to IR,do not release her until she no longer wants her formula, at all,even,then,I would,still give her another week or two of soft releasing,just to make sure she is able to adjust and can crack her own nuts.:thinking :multi
hi mayank, IR, lilbit...........
nuts are actually not part of a native indian squirrel's diet, but they are definitely a GOOD index of tooth sharpness...............apart from, of course indicating good culinary taste on the squirrel's part :D
im so glad this story is unraveling so nicely, and that little doobie is thriving like a good girl:jump ............we all LOVE you for what you are doing for this baby.................wish there were more people like you in the world!!............just today, a motorist ran over an adult squirrel near my home...........my maid held it till it died and then buried it............she was in tears when she told me................the guy who did this did not even slow down or stop.............:dono
about the release, i think, take your time..............and definitely gradually reduce your interaction with doobie............keep it down to a minimum at meal times................otherwise, she wont wanna go away, and who knows - you may not want to let her!!!! :D
07-13-2010, 03:45 PM
yeah there r people like that here ......
cant help it ....
thnx ...and here's a latest video of doobie
yeah i may not want to let her go but i realy waant her to have a normal life .....so i will let her go if i can and if she is up to it ....
okay advice time now.....:D
doobie is on a chewing spree she's chewing her cage,newspaper n the cage etc(u get the point)
wt should i keep in the cage that she can chew in peace ...or should i let stuff roll as they are .???
her teeth are comming out now(molars)so she will b like this for a few days...
Chewing is a normal squirrel function. Their front teeth will continue to grow so chewing hard objects helps to keep them filed down.
I don't know what trees are in native to your area but a few branches from non toxic trees are good.
I use oak branches, deer antlers, sea shells, cuttle bone, turtle shell bone, clean femur bones from deer or cow. Some of these items can be purchased online if you don't have a pet store close by.
Hope this helps.:grouphug
hello guyz
doobie is now 3 months old .
when can i release her ??
07-31-2010, 09:28 AM
hi mayank -
I'm not sure about Indian Palm Squirrels but our greys and foxers up here are generally ready for release at about four months old. I have released babies earlier than that if the weather is good and there is lots of natural food around (acorns, in our case).
mayank90
07-31-2010, 09:31 AM
well the weather here is good and most of the trees here are bearing fruits in this season .....
does the tail signify anything with respect to the squirrels health/age???
doobie's tail issent that fluffy as of now....
island rehabber
07-31-2010, 10:18 AM
The tail should be full and fluffy, to shade them from sun and rain, and provide balance when they leap those BIG leaps through the trees.
chickoo
07-31-2010, 11:34 PM
chickoo took about six months for her tail to fluff out completely............it started growing as a tuft of hair at her bottom, and gradually progressed down to fill out the whole tail..............this was also the same length of time it took for her to start behaving like an adult squirrel............till then, she was more trusting, would go to more people, and was more amenable to petting!!!.............after six months, WHAM!!...........she totally changed............
i really dont know the right age for an indian squirrel to be released...........the whole idea is not to keep her for too long, but to keep her for long enough so that she is capable of surviving when released.............
other members on the board should be able to tell you whether their squirrels were still "adolescents", so to speak, when released!
i had put in a peice of t shirt in doobie's box. She nibbled it and made the strands come out . So wt happened is . She got her foot stuck in the strand of the cloth and got gangrene on her foot i found out when i went to check up on her. I cut the strand immediately . But there is a lot of oedema there and 0 mobility of the foot.
I took her to the vet he said her foot might get back to normal.
He gave an antibiotic,painkiller,and ointment for her.
Pls pray that she gets well soon.
hello
Sorry for not updating every 1 regarding doobie but im having my exams so dont come online often
Any way
I dont have doobie with me now.
or in other words i dont know where she is now.
So what happened was i used to keep her cage out sing every day (at a safe place ) where she could interact with other squirrels and eventually i opened the cage and let her roam free so for a few weeks the routine was every morning i would keep her cage outside and by evening she would b back in it and one afternoon
i just went to check up on her and i saw her there in the cage but when i went in the evening to take the cage indoors she was gone .i put the cage outdoors for about a week but she never came .
I saw many times other squirrels came to her and interacted woth her i even saw one adult squirrel go into her cage while doobie was in it.
So all i can say is i wish she is well and alive.
rest is up to mother nature.
It sounds like she was ready to go at four months. It's probably nice and warm where you are, too. It must be hard to raise a pinky... so tiny and delicate. Mine were almost furless when they came, but not so tiny! Do you ever see her around or leave her food?
