:wave123 I Found a baby Blue Jay. He needs some AB! I can't find my Sulfatrim. So I am giving Baytril. Not sure how much I should give? I was thinking .5 cc(that is out of a 1cc syringe) Any won have a idea? The baby is fully feather He just can't fly!! Only hop--Jump-- 12 inch. He has a scratch across his beak and cheek. I already gave him some AB.5 cc. Should I put heat pad under cage? I have feed him some WaxWorms. Also water. Not in that order.:D

Can we see a pic?

Fully feathered should not need heat, but you can make it available in one part of cage. How deep are scratches? Hesitate to give ABs unless there is infection.

It was a cat!!! :eek: It killed all of them. Just could not get this one. All he really needs, is 2 or 3 more days in the nest. I went ahead and cleaned allot of sheathes from his feathers. I think he will be able to get lift tomorrow. Need to Waite. I just checked on him. He is perching. He is not over heated any more. He swallowed the wax worms I feed him. and swallow the water i gave. He is at least sleeping with his beak closed now. Earlier it was as if he were panting. When Skul gets home I will have him post a picture for me. Thank you 4skwerlz:)

I've seen my blueJays eat black sunflower seeds whole...shell and all...so if you have any of those, he might eat them...or sunflower hearts....they will also eat blueberries.......Dang Cat!! :soapbox

Thank you TP :thankyou I have all seeds, and nut chunks in with him. He is really to young to know what to do with them. :D I know mama and daddy fly around feeding them for another 2 weeks. Then they start eating some on there own. :wahoo

Are the mom & dad still around? With fledglings almost ready to fly, you can do a partial reunite by placing baby in a large cardboard box in a safe location but where parents can tend him during the day. Then bring the box in at night to be safe against predators.

If he's been cat scratched he WILL need ABs and Baytril has been suggested when I've has similar feline incidents. I'll check with my bird rehabber mentor (she is GOOD). Cats carry Pasteurella (lots of critters do) and without the antibiotics that baby won't do well. I'd be glad to contact my birder friend but there are plenty of bird rehabbers right her on TSB so hopefully one will chime in with exactly what you need to do for a good outcome. Here's the dosage recommended to me for a small sparrow. I didn't have a gram scale at the time but this worked well "the dosage for Baytril is .01 cc twice a day for 5-7 days.She can kick it with a dose of amoxicillin once or twice a day too.The dosage for that is .01 after the powdered amoxicillin is diluted 1/4 tsp to 3cc water."

i wouldn't put him out with a wound from a cat, he will need a full round of antibiotics, baytril is fine, if you can give me the strength and his weight in grams i can give you the dosage.
you will need to finish raising the babe.
as a base diet for the babies, i make a slurry of
1 cup science diet kitten food
1 to 1 1/2 cups water
1 2.5 oz jar of beechnut chicken baby food
1/2 tsp avi-era bird vitamins
1/4 tsp calcium carbonate powder
1/4 tsp bird bene bac
2 TBS powdered egg white
store in the fridge and serve it to him warm not hot
either freeze some or make a new batch everyday
i slurry the whole batch up in a blender and use a 1cc syringe to give them just a small amount at a time, make sure he swallows with each bite, feed him as much as he wants with each feeding.
for a bird that is perching you should feed every 1/2-1 hour depending on the age.
if your uncomfortable with the syringe just mash everything with a fork and scoop bits of in into him
offer soaked cat food, scrambled egg, small wild blueberries and other types of fruit along with a small dish of seed and water, eventually he will start picking at it.
he may also enjoy a small dish of insects like mealworms and wax worms as he gets older

I wish I could find the Sulftrim. :dono It was for a baby Blue Jay.I already gave him .1cc Last night and this morning. I needed to get it into him. Sooner the better. I hope this will help you. Thank you for the slurry mix. I could not remember all what went into it. :thankyou

well if it's similar to the tablet at 22.7mg/ml
if he weighs

50g= .02ml
75g= .03ml
100= .04ml
he should be somewhere in between that depending on age

:) The little Blue Jay wt is 46gm. So give him a little under .2 cc? or should I just give the .2 cc? I was keeping him out side. Wonted to see if Mom or Dad would show up. No luck yet. It is starting to get hummid and hot out side. So I guess he will need to stray inside. :thankyou

Do you think I could use this formula, to feed Blue Jay? I set him out side for a few hours yesterday. Thought his mom or dad would show up.:nono No nothing! A mama Wren tried to feed him through the bars. He is doing fine, eating and drinking. I am still having to give him water drop, by drop. He still has not tried going after the seeds, I put on the bottom of cage. He does love wax worms.:D Still perching. :thank you Thank you for all your help! :thankyou

the store bought brand baby bird formula's are really for parrots even though i know the one your talking about has a picture of a bluejay on it!
i have actually called them once and said sooo this formula is okay to feed wild songbirds, and all they would say is it's is a balanced diet for baby hookbills.
with our songbirds the protein needs to be animal protein based, even birds that are primarily seed eaters like goldfinch's feed their young insects.
in my early unlicensed years before the internet, i used to use kaytee and add stuff to it, i'm sure all the nutrition was completely the wrong balance, many grew to release but chances are they had shorter lives and problems later in life because of it.
stick with the formula i gave you, or look up the FONS formula,other super smart rehabbers and nutritionist have come up with it, give him the best beginnings of his life as possible.
i wish someone would come up with a formula we could just mix and feed, it would make life much simpler for me let me tell you!

i would skip the water completely it's so easy to aspirate them with it, if you think he's dehydrated you can feed him blueberries or bits of peeled grape.
if they are really dehydrated i will SQ them, and dip a soft paintbrush in water and after feeding and dab it in when they gape

:morning I have been using your formula.:thumbsup He is doing great. Screams when he is hungary, And if I am to slow screams even louder.:D He is always looking forward to the worms.
When I give him water, it is drop by drop on the outside of his beak. usually he will open beak just enough to let that drop go in. You can see him swallow it.That I am very careful for.
:thinking I only asked about the bird formula because inside the pamphlet that cames with, their is a section on feeding wild birds!! ONE Thing I was happy about it states!""DO NOT MAKE PET'S OUT OF WILD BIRDS."" It also states you need to add protean and fresh fruit. Depending what kind of bird you are feeding. I wont to thank you again Psychobird. Your help is greatly appreciated. I will let you know how he is doing and when I release him. :thankyou :bowdown

raising a baby blue jay is a joy, they are such characters, sooo much personality.
one thing to think about when you release, make sure he has lots and lots of outdoor time in a safe enclosure to get to know the resident jays, if they don't get used to him they will immediately beat him up and chase him off, could even kill him
