PLEASE HELP WITH POCKETS..

5 years ago, my wife found a baby squirrel outside my house and brought the little thing to my attention. I thought it best to leave it there, thinking it had fallen out of the nest and the mother would retrieve it. two days went by and still the baby squirrel was still there. Well that was the day that changed our lives. We brought the little guy in and with every intention to find him a home at a rehab, we started our journey. Days turned to weeks and we grew very attached, we had fallen in love with him. Every call met with destruction of this beautiful little guy and we couldn't bring ourselves to destroy him.

A long story short is we named him pockets and he has been our baby for 5 long hard wonderful years that I would never do again but wouldn't trade for the world. I was diagnosed with cancer and due to financial restrictions have to move. We can't take pockets with us. My wife and I are crushed. We are back to destruction being his end and can't bear the thought. Please help us. He is the most loving little creature, and I cant bear the thought of killing him. Please, do you have any thoughts, Ideas, info for us to stave killing our baby.

Where are you? What state do you live in? I'm in Jacksonville FL, and I'd be willing to help if you're nearby? I would take Pocket in and let him be an indoor house squirrel with lots of love and attention. I have no young children, but do have squirrels that are in the process of being released and 3 cats and 1 dog. I have a half acre of wooded land if you think Pockets would enjoy time outside in the future after he's gotten to know me.

My husband and I will take Pockets in and give him a loving home. But it will be 2 weeks before we can drive up there... is that ok? We would love to have him and give him a forever home. We live in Jacksonville FL and we are willing to drive up there but we can't do it this week because he has to be the boss at work while the boss is at a conference. But if you can wait until the week after this one coming up we can come and get him. It's about 12 hours from our house, so let me know and my husband will put in for vacation time as soon as the boss gets back. Pockets would have a good loving forever home with no little kids pulling thetail or bugging him. I have a very large cage that he could be in until he gets to know us, and his own private bedroom. Once he got to know us and felt comfortable roaming the house he would be free to run all over the house and sleep with us. He would also have a nice nest box of his own that he could sleep in. My girl Willow (I call her Willy now) used to choose to sleep in a cat carrier that we put a fleece blanket in. Her brothers would pick on her so she felt more comfortable sleeping in our room and would put herself to bed in the cat carrier.
We'll be awake around 9:am Sunday, feel free to call any time after that up until 11pm eastern time.
Oh, I am 45 and so is my husband - so we're not little kids asking for a squirrel. I've only been rescuing and rehabbing for 2 years but I also work with a licensed rehabber here in Jacksonville. I stay at home as a housewife and my husband works full time as a ColdFusion developer /Senior Software Engineer so we have enough money to buy all his special and favorite treats.

I seen on the board that someone was going to Boston tomorrow or soon? They could always come back through here and drop him off if you need us to take him sooner than 2 weeks.

Well I haven't heard from the person with Pockets so I'm assuming I'm not in the running to take care of this dear sweet squirrel. I had a choice of either have an anniversary trip or spend the money in gas to get up to Pockets and pick him up. So I guess if Pockets doesn't need me I'll probably go spend a couple of days further south in Florida for our 26th anniversary. I so wanted to care for Pockets. I guess I wasn't quick enough boo hoo. Oh well, I'm sure I'll be busy with the release of my 4 babies anyway. I have let them go out during the day and they come back at night to sleep in their nest box. Willy didn't come home for over 24 hours - I was worried about her. But then last night around 10:pm she came climbing up the screen the their Florida room sanctuary and asked to be let in. I had closed the doors thinking she was not coming back again at night. She's scared of her own shadow after all. But she came back and today she's sleeping in after being out for so long lol! She is such a sweetie. Two of the boys are hanging out near the Florida room and came back inside to have a nap in their nestbox. I'll miss them when they decide not to come back any more and make their dreys up in the trees, so I thought it would be nice to have a squirrel in the house permanantly. So far all the squirrels I've raised have been releaseable so I can't bear the thought of forcing one to stay when it's not what they want.

Please don't think that I was purposely not calling or talking to you. That is not my intention. I am still overwellmed by all the outburst of Love, Kindness and concern for Pockets. We have been talking to so many people sometimes I can't keep track. My phone has been wringing off the hook. And each phone call seems to last forever just talking about squirrels. My favorite subject. We haven't made up ours minds yet about where Pockets will live. Were still talking to people. I'm sure I don't have to tell most people on the site how hard this is for my husband and I. We are crying ALL the time. Nancy you know what I'm talking about. There is alot more going on in our lives right now and it's just alot to figure out. And then to have to give my pride and joy to someone else to raise. It's VERY PAINFUL. No problem, I totally understand how hard it is to give one of your children away. I had a daughter (human) stolen at birth 27 years ago. I met her and have a relationship with her but for 18 years I wondered if she was ok. The people that stole her didn't know they had stolen her, they thought they adopted her legitimately. So don't feel bad if I'm not the chosen one - there are MANY good people and if Pockets can live nearby and you can visit him then that would be the best thing for you and Pockets! I hope the person you have chosen or will choose lives close and is a member of the board so we can all see pictures of him! Best of luck to you!

Ok.....this is not final yet...but I couldn't not tell you what's going on with Pockets. We have talked to Alexandra from Tomo's Place and she thinks it's best for us to keep Pockets. It will not be good for him to be one taken out of his home and me at the same time. Moving him somewhere away from both would just kill him. And that is not an option. Sooooo tomorrow Both Allen and I are going to talk to my mother and see if we can bring Pockets with us and keep him (sometimes not all...but we wont tell her that yet..lol) in a cage both inside and out. Which will be cool for Pockets because he's never been outside. Alexandra has also told us of A BUNCH of new things that we can give to Pockets to eat and play with. Ya know sometimes I think I'm a doomed person..but the best thing that has happened since the birth of my children and my marriage to Allen is the gift of having Pockets in my life. You all know how I feel because you live it every day. To the people who have offered to take Pockets my biggest thanks. Hopefully it will work out at my mothers and we can be all happy again. :jump

Ok I just realized that the first letter I wrote on this site I copied an email that Allen had written to Alexandra at Tomo's Tree House. So when it was written that he was fighting Cancer it is Allen that has been fighting it and not me. Right now Allen is doing good. Finished his cemo and radiation had his latest pet scan and it came back clean. We have to do another one in a couple of months. But at least that one came back clean. Allen is getting his strength back and his taste buds slowly but at least there coming back. Thank you for all your good thoughts and prayers.

Sometimes when bad things happen in our lives, we almost feel we are going to just exist with BAD STUFF all the time from now on. We begin to strip away anything good that we loved or enjoyed the most. But those are the very things that keep us going when life throws us a curve ball. Pockets does as much for you two as you've done for him....it's a beautiful relationship and I am SO happy you are going to try and keep it going. :grouphug

This is why Tomo is so respected...she knows her squirrels and she knows people. She knew that you belonged together at least for now..so you do one day at a time...There are always options if you need them down the line. Five years is a long time to be together and you never know how Pockets would adjust...of course with Tomo, she would know if he were happy or not and for sure she would let you know to come get your baby...
I am just delighted and I hope that you are as well. I know it seems like you should be dancing in the streets, but you are most likely just thinking of the next challenge and waiting to see how pockets adjusts. There is a thread here about Samantha. An adult squirrel that most likely was hit and found on the lawn of her new mama's yard. She had a broken pelvis and it has since healed, but since the vet thought that she should not get pregnant or risk reinjuring her hip, she could not be released...She is now in a cage and living the good life...

At the top of the page there is a quick link you click on that then there's one that says open buddy list. Nancy showed me how to use it. But nobody is ever there. Were doing ok today. I don't have a house phone right now because it fell out of my pocket onto the floor and guess who got it. Ok now this is a nice story at the end. I'm looking for pockets this am. No where to be found. Starting to get nervous. So the last place I check is the bathroom. He likes to chill in the window when I open it. Look all around, nothing, I turn around and look at my medicine cabinet with the mirror and this little nose is pocking out at me. Someone had left the mirror open and he got in there and was looking at me peeking around the corner of the mirror. He was so cute. Next time I'll look there first..LOL :rotfl

I resize my pictures with [paint] all computers have that program...just right click on the pictue then...open with [paint] all to have to do is resize the picture and save it as...I usually do 50% and 50%


Oh and I happy Pockets will be staying with his mommie and daddy...You know animals have a sixth sense and can zero in on our emotions. They KNOW when we are sick and can actully speed up the healing process...Having treatments SUCKS but having a squirrel to help you throught it SUCKS LESS

Ok I hope everyone who I have talked to will be able to read this. The move is done. My brain isn't in good shape but that's normal..lol.

I took Allen a little longer to build Pockets "home". So he had to stay in the carry case for around 12 hours. Poor Pockets DIDN'T LIKE THAT AT ALL. :nono Cried alot Saturday Night. I would wake up and put my hand by the opening and talk to him and he would go back to sleep. Our hearts were breaking.

But his cage was finished yesterday afternoon. He comes out and kinda looks around like were the hell am I. But he still has his own bed. His own food dishes. And his jungle gym so hopefully that will help.

I might not be around for a little while. Alot of cleaning and reorganizing needs to be done. I still REALLY MISS talking to hearing from you all. And again THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH for all your support and help when we were having the worst time. I love you all. If you ever want to talk (which I would LOVE) MY oops Nancy said not to do that..ok let me reword that. If you ever wanna talk email me and I'll give you my phone number. ladyandpockets@yahoo.com.

You felt so bad putting Pockets in a carrying case for 12 hours...imagine if you had to give him up. I am just thrilled that he is with you, as I'm sure he is also. Right now the important thing is that you are all together. Good Morning everyone!!!

I have a question for you. I have seen on some pictures on here were you have a harness and leash on your pets. Is it safe. Have you ever had an issue were your squirrel has choked him/her self. I want to get Pockets a harness and leash, but Allen has issues with it. He's afraid that he will choke himself. I sooo hate him being in the cage and want to take him outside and let him move around.

Our camera is still broken. Actually I don't really know where it is right now. LOL :shakehead When I get it found I will take some pictures for you all.

I have been so busy, no time to say I am glad you are settled in and your Pockets is with you.:D
Regarding the harness, I do not use one yet. However one of our members is a friend of mine and she successfully does use one. I will confirm the type with her. I squirrel sat for her while she vacationed and I saw it. It was the type that attaches in two places under the body so they cannot hang themselves, I believe. I am scared my fuzz ball would get wrapped around a tree or something.
I will let you know when I talk to her. She is rescuing oily birds right now in the Pan handle, bless her heart. Damn oil spill.

Ya he is a little bit. He still dosen't like it. I take him out and play with him as much as I can. I sneak him in the bathroom lol and let him sit and sniff out the window. He loves to do that. Ya My husband and I have talked about getting Pockets a harness because I saw Alexandra use one in her Tomo's Tree House Pictures. Allen also thinks it's not a good idea in case he chocks himself.
