OK, so I've read everything posted about the best rodent pellets out there.
My anxiety has kicked in though, and I finally have to ask if me feeding Mazuri rodent pellets to my 1 year old little girl "Spunks" will come back and bite me later on.
(Lucky me, she LOVES belgian endive, brussel sprouts, cilantro, dandelion greens, and all other VERY good veggies and fruit of that nature-no pickiness here.)
She is beautiful now, coat is perfect, perfect weight, eyes are bright and clear, bones are very very strong, energy is normal, as spunky as ever.
All seems to be going well, and considering she really loves the pellets (and has been eating them since 5 months of age) I'd REALLY hate to suddenly change the brand and have her reject the pellets.
I'm so sick to my stomach and worried over this after what I've read on here that KayTee is the best brand...I don't know what to think.
I thought "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" right? If they're working this well for her, should I really change?

I feed my squirrels Mazuri rodent block all the time! I rehab and release though, so the longest I have an animal is 8-9 months. I am not sure how good it is for more long term. If you squirrel is eating a good variety of veggies and the block, though, I would think he should stay happy and healthy :thumbsup. Biggest issue is usually too many nuts or sunflower seeds and not enough veggies and healthy block. It is all about balance.

:Welcome
Personally I would go to the pet store or on line and look up the list of ingredients and percentages to compare. Remember that squirrels in the wild are foragers and eat in broad cycles depending on what's available. You might also want to give live insects like mealworms and waxworms. Squirrelies LOVE bugs. They are part of their wild diet. If your not squeamish offer plentiful moths and earwigs but not if you chemically treat your yard. Mugzi gobbles those things up!

I know quite a few long-time rehabbers who swear by Mazuri. If your squirrel loves them, go for it! They are easy to obtain and not horrible nutritionally, either -- especially when she eats so many other good things. :thumbsup You could try ordering some Henry's Healthy Blocks (HHB) just to see if she likes them, since those have even more nutritional value, but I wouldn't cut her off from the Mazuri's.

Personally, I like feeding a variety. Right now I have Harlan Teklad and HHBs plus all of the veggies and fruits.

Although most rehabbers use Mazuri rodent block, what most exotics vets recommend is Oxbow's Regal Rat, which can be purchased online from Dr. Foster and Smith if it cannot be found in your local pet store. They are little heart shaped pellets and have the best ingredients for a commercial brand. They should have as much as they want to eat of it and supplement their diet with the other goodies that are mentioned here on the board. If changing to another brand of rodent chow, just start adding a little to their food bowl and over time start removing the old food, or just serve both. :)
