Sam is still having some trouble breathing, and I think his sniffer isn't working well. I thought I would put some of the foods he is used to eating in the cage to see if he will recognize it as food by sight.

What are the other wild squirrels eating right now?

Snip the tips off the budding tree branches - maple is particularly yummy.

The maple tree seed pods (helicopters) are a common food for wild squirrels as Mugzeezmom suggested...Dylan goes crazy for them..He will eat up to 50 at one sitting...so make sure you collect alot...Actually, I gave some to my flyers last night and Tiffy liked them...

Also tree buds, grasses, roses...all untreated of chemicals of course...

Hi, is Maple the same as Sycamore? i have Sycamore trees in my garden and the leaves look like Maple and they also have the helicopter things.

I'll get a picture of the leaves and seeds if there are any

Yes, Maple is a common squirrel food. I think squirrels eat pretty much any species of maple, although only some species produce seeds in spring -- others produce in fall.

Chipmunk lover, Sycamore can be a ambiguous tree name -- there are many types of sycamore. But yes, there is a tree in the maple family called a "sycamore," so if your Sycamore looks like a maple, it probably is.

Thank you Peter. I took a few pictures today.

We have two large ones at the back of the garden, at the moment the leaves are very small and there are yellowish catkins but no helicopters yet. Some of the branches have buds which are red and green. The first four pictures are the large sycamores. The last picture is a young one just over a year old. That one has large leaves and some buds. The bark is smooth. We have a number of Lilacs too i think i read these are safe for Squirrels? I have lots of blossom on cherry and pear trees, i have fed this to my Chippies in the past they love it. Is this safe?

Thank you

I think they eat these, but I’m Not sure what they’re called, I call them caterpillars.

My wilds are eating hibiscus flowers, clover both greens and flowers, and these really ugly inch worms that look like sticks. I've also seen them scraping the lichen that grows on tree bark.

Maple is a common squirrel food.I think squirrels eat pretty much any species of maple,If you eat a lot of salads, but can’t seem to lose any weight, the culprit may be your dressing. The maple tree seed pods are a common food for wild squirrels as Mugzeezmom suggested.

Yes, squirrels love 'helicopters' (the wilds will sit and drop them on my head after they eat out the pod.....little stinkers...lol) But when we were kids, we would take the empty one, split the end where the seed was eaten from, wet them and stick them to our noses.......(hey we were bored....lol)
