Using Momma2Boo's recipe for Healthy Nut Balls as my guide, I have devised a Mr. P tested recipe that would be perfect for squirrels with tooth or mouth issues (or little piggies like P who like food they can slurp). It is also a good "carrier" for extra stuff you are trying to slip in to the diet - calcium, for example. I think it would also make a nice transition for the babies.
1.5 teaspoons apple sauce (smooth, and read the label - try to get natural apple sauce - no high fructose corn syrup or sugar)
1 teaspoon ground rodent block
1 teaspoon formula powder
1 teaspoon water
1/4 teaspoon almond butter
Heat to the same temp you would formula, either in a microwave or over hot water. The almond butter will melt and you can stir it into the mixture. It should be about the consistency of runny oatmeal.
I use about a 50/50 blend of ground HHBs and ground Harlan Teklad. The HHBs are a coarse grind because of their texture; the Harlan Teklad grinds into a powder because it is rock hard. Use a coffee grinder or a blender or food processer to grind the stuff.
Substitute! Peanut butter instead of almond. Add a drop of molasses to make it sweeter. Add yogurt. And feed off a spoon - Mister P sees me walk downstairs with my little cut and spoon and he is front and center and waiting impatiently...
