My kids found a baby squirrel ,took in and got on computer for info and called a local vet...try to make story short...fed pedialyte...(called rehab person the vet gave me)waited for call back...vet said to give goats milk after the pedialyte(only fot a tempory fix, since they only had a 30$ container of the esbilac and I was no ready to commit(as waiting for rehab person)...any how all wa swell doing as they instructed...NO CALL BACK...got the esbilac and changed like they said....have fed 2 times and no pee or poop....any suggestions?have been stimulating with warmed cotton swab was going before...is it just the formula change?...oh and if you need to know they guessed the squirrel at about 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 weeks old...Thanks sorry I ramble on...

There are several Floridians on this board so somebody close by should be able to help. Have you read the threads here about finding/caring for babies?

Things to consider...
Is he on supplemental heat?
Is he fully rehydrated?
Is he getting formula according to his body weight, frequently enough?

:Welcome Someone will be here soon to help you..In the mean time make sure the baby is warm...A cold baby should never be fed....Did you check to see if he was dehydrated. The pinch test? Do you have him on a heating pad? Is there anyway you can post a picture? I know a lot of questions but believe me there will be A LOT more questions...And there is no such thing as rambling when it comes to baby squirrels....Most important..never feed a cold baby, Pedyalite before formula because chances are he is dehydrated...keep warm..What are you feeding him with?

You switched from goats milk to cow's milk protein in the Esbilac. This might have caused digestive problems (I would have thought diarrhea), but anyway, did you introduce the formula/Esbilac by diluting it first 1/4 strength for a couple of feedings, then 1/3 strength, then 1/2,and so on until you reached full strength? When I've had to switch formula in the past, I always fed Pedialyte for at least a couple of feedings to flush them out, so to speak, before introducing the new formula. You might start over--a couple of feedings of Pedialyte, then diluted formula. Also, stimulating can sometimes take quite a while to accomplish the goal--more than just a couple of minutes, more like ten to fifteen. Finally, Esbilac has had some issues with its processing. We recommend Fox Valley. foxvalleynutrition.com.

when was the baby found?
can you post pics?
too much pedialyte can hurt, rather than help, for long periods..
if baby is hydrated well, I would offer diluted formula for a few feedings...
whipping cream is near cold milk at the grocery, and says whipping cream or heavy cream, either one is ok!
However, for now if you are using Esbilac, just formula[without cream] for a day, before adding anything and I agree, Fox Valley is better.
Are you using ready made Esbilac? or powder?
like PBJ said, switching formula can make the frequency and regularity of pees and poops, offset.

Hi, :Welcome to the board. I am near Jacksonville and am a licensed Rehab. I will do what I can to help if you are near my area. We really need an idea of where in the state you are in order to help you find help. Do you intend to raise this baby on your own? We can help in many ways.

Hi thanks to everyone for the help...I am in North Fl and the 2 vets offices I called gave the same women as a rehabber...I have soooo much vested now and am going to attempt on my own.I would post a pict but dont know how...Am not computer savy...
Any how back to squirrel found a week ago yesterday...gave the pedialyte approx 24 hrs could tell was dehydrated from the tenting of the skin, then the vet recomemened the goats milk,as I awaited to hear from the rehabber...ate it well and pottied well....then since not hearing back from rehab person I decided to go get the esbilac....they said to dilute equal parts water to formula..for a few feedings then slowly go to full strength...it has had 4 feedings of that...when I just fed at 1:00 it had a little dried poop on rectum so maybe it did a bit in its box...Is very lively and looks for the dropper as I get her out...she acts ok,and is peeing well...As to the one who said stimulate longer I will try that...before I would barely touch and she would go...longest I have stimulated is about 5 mins...and shes out cold!!!

Thanks everyone for your help...

Do you have a gram scale to find out how much she weighs? Is it possible that you're under-feeding her? (Please, don't take offense, just trying to help get some ideas rolling.) :peace

She looks a little thin to me too, but could just be the position she's in. My guess is that she is about 2 1/2- 3 weeks old, not much fur yet. Sounds like things are going well so far. Anne is in North Florida and so am I. If you find that you are having any difficulty caring for her, just let one of us know and we can be there in a flash. In the meantime, just keep up the good work!! :grouphug

Response to the scale...I do not...I had been going off what all found here on computer...staretd off at about 1cc,am up but varies....she seems to stop when full...and when was on the goat milk she had no problems with peeing and pooping...maybe this is just from the change in diet...poor thing is all confused:osnap ...Just been going on what I read for the age etc...and from looking at picts on other sites also...she eats very eagerly then stops and curls up in my hand and falls asleep apparently when full...I hope I am doing right...
Her eyes are not open she has fur all over but is very thin white on belly ,none around the private area, her head has had fur since found her and her tail has fur...has tiny teeth coming in bottom llooks like...how old do you all think she is?

Did you know that you pay for everything out of your own pocket? The state gives you not one cent to rehab...and it costs a fortune to raise a squirrel right. :) :)
Just thought I would throw that in since you said that you were unemployed...:)
Glad that you found us...you sure will get all the help you need raising your little one...sure is a real cutie you have there...:grouphug :grouphug

Sorry if I'm repeating a question here...but are you feeding Fox Valley...you will love it. If not...get the 32/40...you can just stick with that even though it says for up to 4 weeks...here's the link...http://foxvalleynutrition.com/prod/products.asp?PLID=1

I don't want to alarm you, but it's not a good sign when they start to crawl off the heat. Check on her periodically to make sure this was just an "acciednt" on her part. It's also not good that she was "very cold." While they can't thermoregulate until fully furred (keep themselves warm), at her age it should be less of an issue than if she were a true pinkie. The malfunctioning heating pad was a horrible tragedy, and we can only hope that it was an aberration. I myself will continue to use them, but you need to make certain that she does have an area to crawl to if she gets too hot. The water bottles, like the rice buddies, are okay if you can monitor them, for they do get cold, and the water bottles in particular can draw heat from them rather than provide heat when they do get cold. Again, make sure the heating pad is set on "low" and at least half pf her container is off of it.

Hello. I just wanted to pop in and say make sure you are stimulating him vigorously. Some require more stimulation than others! Best of luck to you. :)
