Yet another pigeon needing help. I have him warm in a dark quiet area. He will not take hydrating solution. Not stable. Has hard time balancing, keeps his neck and head upside down on the floor while body in upright position. Was attacked by cat but possible ilness prior. If anyone in the NJ area can help or take him please contact me asap. I cannot drive far. Wheel on car is bent and I can't drive over 15 mph with out my car jumping. Animal control will not show up for Pigeon and will only put him down anyway.
Maura, please contact me with the info for the one out by you. Perhaps they can find someone to pick him up??

Go to "Starling Talk". It's a board for primarily Starlings but there are folks who will help and give advice for pigeons and other birds. Good luck to your little guy.

#

All pigeons with severe central nervous disorders should be culled, since the prospects of a cure are very poor.
#

I the fancier does not wish to eliminate valuable pigeons, they should be separated from the rest of the loft. Vaccination of diseased birds is not possible.
Oh no, does this mean he just won't get better at all? NO cure, and the vaccine if I can even get it might not do anything.
What to do what to do!

We see this fairly often in injured birds, usally Hit by Vehicle. Probably neurological or possibly inner ear, we do dose, lightly with meatcam early on but the only thing I have ever seen resolve it is suppotive care for a long, long time.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is exactly what he has, his stool is also very watery and not normal. He is identical to that video. I was on starling talk a long time ago. Not sure if I should join again according to this site he won't live very long.

They can get better with excellent supportive care. You will have to feed as if a baby with exact as they cannot feed themselves. They die from starvation and dehydration before the virus kills them.

Keep this bird in isolation and be very careful about washing hands and clothes so not to spread the virus to othe birds in your care.

Oh lord, what have I gotten myself into. I am going to have to find someone else who can care for him. I am very sick myself right now and don't have the extra money for this. I am not even taking in squirrels right now. :(
WAHHHHHHH! Sorry had to vent.
Maybe I can try to find someone on pigeon talk or starling forum.

I don't know, but I would assume the answer is yes and take all precautions. Don't buy trouble and worry yourself into a corner. Just be careful and act on each situation as you need to to the best of your ability. :thumbsup You will do fine.

I guess I have no choice but to care for him the best I can until I can find someone to take over. This is such bad timing. I swear no matter where I go, no matter what kind of animal, if its sick or hurt it will find me. MEH!

hi, defiantly go on pigeon talk for advice, pmv is treatable but it does take supportive care, adult pigeons will need to be tube fed 2-3 times a day, each feeding taking less than a minute or two not nearly as much work as a baby squirrel.
they can recover from it, but sometimes will still have neuro issues but you won't know until the virus has run it's course.
do keep him away from all your other birds, always a good idea with wildlife anyways and use proper sanitary precautions with him as to not cross contaminate anything

here's a couple of videos on how to pea and corn pop a piji that will work until you can get some kaytee exact and how to tube

only thing with the tubing is i would use a slightly smaller tube and pinch it when i pull it out.
i normally use a feeding needle and i love them but you would probably need to order one they sell them here if you interested
http://www.squirrelsandmore.com/product/577/stainless-steel-feeding-needles.htm
i use a 14g curved for adult pigeons

Thanks. Do I have to tube feed or can I feed like the first video? Also what about fluids? Is the Kaytee exact enough fluids in itself?
I think I have a 12 g feeding tube here somewhere.

Me too ShesASquirrelyGirl ... me too. I believe there's a blinking sign above my place that says vacancy for all sick critters.

God knows which of His children will care for His creatures. :D

if you can tube in some fluids with the corn and peas that would be good, he should be able to take quite a bit like 30 pieces or more.
kaytee would be better it will have all the fluids he needs, you may want to start with more fluids than food in case he's starving.
then only give him more once his crop empties

I hate to say it but the pij died early morning. He wasn't able to move much and I know he was going downhill with not much I could do for him. I made him comfy in a box with towels and let him be. He was dead not to long after.
