Poor Gizmo....sounds like he has a pain in his tail, could be nerve damage and he gets shooting pains back there and has to chew away the pain.
An "E" collar is what you are reffering too as a lampshade. They are easy to make and will stop him from getting to the stump of his tail. If you can't make it maybe you have a crafty friend who can.
I'll check for the link and post it soon. I'll be right back.

lampshade ...aka, elizabethian collar...e collar for short..
sorry you are having problems...but oyu have come to the right place..:thumbsup
as far as the bleeding, cornstarch or flour will help for now, but an e collar must be used to curb his chewing...
here is a link to see how they are made

Thank you Jackie...this is exactly what I was looking for in Merman thread about Mia...but couldn't find it.
2388549...
The molefoam by Dr. Scholls is also called "moleskin" it is a blessing and it works very well. I have made an E collar for my squirrel and it worked like a charm.
Gizmo will only stop chewing his tail when the underlying problem is fixed. Do you have a vet...I don't know what state you live in but not all states are squirrel friendly.
What is your situation state and/or vet wise?

What is your situation state and/or vet wise?i dont believe my state is squirel friendly when i lived in ohio long time ago 3 years back when he started picking at it the 2nd time i took to a vet and they pretty much laughted at me for bringing him there though i called the 2nd nature vets or wild life vets they some times are required by stupid mans law to take your pet as they believe squirells cant be made in to pets but gizmo and have formed a great bon and i fear hell be taken from me this is why i choose to try and resolve problem my self there is one hospital place i called 6 years ago that said he would not take gizmo from me but... who really knows if there required by law what ever but if it continues getting worse i will be forced to take him there
thanks Jackie in Tampa for the links very helpful advice will try making one

Jackie is right...you can PM one of us and we may find a rehaber close to you. It's worth a shot to find a helping hand for any future needs that will arise.
You can try Bach's Rescue Remedy, you can find it at GNC or a health food store, small bottle is around 10+ dollars. Check on line if you don't have a store close by. Rescue remedy has calming herbs and alcohol to help him relax. :tilt
Expect Gixmo to not like the E collar :D He will bang into everything until he gets the hang of it. Keep him confined so he won't hurt himself.
Good luck and keep us posted.:peace

yes i know he will hate it so maybe a sq trancualizer and thats just to get it on he normaly warns me before sinking his teeth in but not always lolol but if i cant find anything to keep him calm ill trim his back feet claws which are easiest and i have a small trap cage i used long time ago to catch him a mate she didnt work out she was very mean mainly to me so i let her go besides she and gizmo would clean each other to point of no fur left anyhoo rambling away here
also was wondering if others here allow there sq play gizmo like to hang around on my shoulders and back and like cleaning my ears and dryskin some times he get a bit rough so i say "EASY" and he mellows out also was wondering if others have similar experiences when it comes to hard covered nuts examples when i give gizmo the standard hard shelled net such as walnuts he becomes very terrotorial and grunts at me but say i give him a coconut he become downrigh hateful i give him coconuts 6 times a year to help keep his teeth sharpened down

Yes...that is it!!!
Try the rescue remedy to calm him. After he is calm, try to wrap him in a blanket or old t-shirt so you can put the e collar on him. It will be hard to do one handed but is managable if you are determened. I don't want Gizmo to bite you...it's stressful for you both.:D
I am looking for a rehaber in your area via Squirrel-rehab.org I didn't give out your information....because I don't have any..Ha-ha ! I gave out mine and am waiting to get a call or email in return.
A member here is in North Ohio but I am sure that is too far for either one of you. She may know of a rehaber closer to you. I'll PM her and see if she does.
In the meantime does anyone else know of someone close to Ohio ???:dono
Sounds like you and Gizmo have a good relationship...if he grooms you that means he really likes you and he has made you his !!!:bowdown

:wave123 Hi 2388549 I have not read all this thread.:shakehead When a tail has been degloved. It Is painful. Some times when they fall off, and every thing is OK. BUT if it does no heal right. Their will be a tip of live bone exposed! or just a little point. PAINE full, and some times like a tooth AK that will never go away. All the nerve endings have to die or be covered. The vet needs to amputate down to a very healthy part of the bone and glue him up "yes medical super glue" If cough in time. They don't go through this. Just my experience. I will go and finish reading. Christal I hope this helps you.

Hey, I have an idea. There is another thread on the board where folks were talking about having been bitten by a squirrel, and how painful it was. One of our regulars mentioned that the Bach's Rescue Remedy CREAM, which is applied topically to wounds, makes the pain go away "like magic." It will be right next to the liquid at the drug or health food store. The nice thing is that these are all non toxic, so even if he manages to get some in his mouth it won't hurt him.
If this is pain related, and the cream takes the pain away, this could work and you wouldn't need the collar...
