Does anyone know of sources of antibiotics that don't require a vet's prescription? Our squirrel Peter is showing signs of an upper respiratory illness (sneezing alot), and also received a wound from another squirrel, so I'm concerned about infection. We live in an illegal state, so I can't take her to a vet.

I'm familiar with ornacycline, a form of tetracycline that's available for birds. Is there anything else I can use?

Thanks and Regards,
Bill Erickson

Contact a wildlife rehabber and ask if they have some antibiotic you can put out for a wild squirrel that looks to have an infection.
If there is a wound bite and upper respiratory an over the counter or herbal supplement isn't going to take care of it.
Is she a pet?

My Flower got an upper respitory infection and I treated her with amoxicillin, baytril is supposed to be what is used but the only thing I could get my hands on was the amoxicillin and she is now her healthy self. Good luck

If I remember correctly amoxicillin is good for squirrels... Do you have any friends/family that may have taken their dog/cat to a vet and received baytril or another antibiotic??

No, a recently released rehab that's started coming back (either due to the squirrel attack or the recent cold weather). I posted the story of how we found and rehabbed her at http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?p=469417.

I will check when I get home but I have tons of Amoxicilin for people. Is this the same thing that can be used for his baby?

Penicillin-based drugs aren't preferred for squirrels because they kill the necessary gut bacteria, but they can be used. I've used Clavamox before with no problem but also gave probiotics. Amoxycillin is Amoxycillin.
