We are into health foods and stay away from anything with soy. Just wondering to make the homemade blocks.. How is the best way to get the proper amount of vitamins and minerals? In the meantime I'm going to order the Harlan Teklad that is listed here. We have a couple of rats but a friend has a Prevost Squirrel and wanted something natural. Thanks for any help :) Kim

Yes, the lecithin in HHB's is extracted from soy. It is a very purified form of lecithin and I doubt there is much of the "soy" left. There's only about 5 g per batch, maybe a quarter teaspoon.

Most commercial rodent blocks contain a lot of soy and I agree too much might not be good for our critters. That's why I use whey protein instead of soy protein for example.

Most rats will eat the Harlan Teklad, and some squirrels will. It is not "natural" however. HHBs are the only truly all-natural rodent block that I'm aware of. Still, the Harlan is much better than other commercial rodent blocks, which is why I recommend it as a cheaper alternative to HHBs.
