My baby Alpo I rescued on 9/27/09. His age then approx 5 weeks - now is about 10-11 wks old. He had been a victim of a dog attack, with a puncture wound to the groin and rear thigh areas, anus was swollen/a little bloody, and ear was torn. On 9/28 he smelled of death and I saw 3 maggots in his bedding. Gave him Capstar, and 6 maggots came out of him. Only around 10/19 (8 wks) did his eating increase to 8-12 ccs a setting. We decided not to give him antibiotics due to his frailty - the only thing we had going was his ability to eat and we did not want to risk with his anus injury any diarrhea nor aggravating his ability to eat.

Last night I noticed he has come down with some congestion in his nose and eyes, his feeding decreased to 8-10 ccs yesterday, and this morning he was mouth breathing. His feeding has been for the last 2 weeks 12-16 ccs 4x daily, however he is not interested still in any solid foods. Anus is still swollen and open. We treat daily with neosporin to keep it lubed to help with the passing (sometimes his poo will clump and get stuck in the opening).

Any advice anyone may have for this guy? I have multiple problems with him and any experience is greatly appreciated. i'm new to rehabbing!:thankyou

Have you tried to find a rehabber? I think your little one needs antibiotics fast. He does sound like he is in bad shape. I will be right back on, want to check some things...

Thank you all so much.

I have called my vet and he is graciously seeing Alpo this afternoon at 4:30. Should I ask for Sulfatrim? Is that the "nicest" of the antibacterials? And when feeding, do I need to add plain yogurt (if so, how much)?

I failed to mention I did give 1 cc of diluted vitamin c to him at 700 am and 1130 am. Actually I do think there was a little improvement from 7-1130 from this? Could I continue this for a couple of days, even with antibiotics?

Thanks again!

Baytril is a "kind" antibiotic...what are you feeding now, and forgive me but how old is the little one? Do you know this vet well, a lot of them will just euthanise a squirrel, please be careful who you bring it to. I don't understand why you are giving vitamin C did someone tell you to do so?

Is there any possibility you've aspirated him a few times over the weeks? I'd treat for pneumonia with Baytril or Sulfatrim. It won't hurt him and might save him. One vet told me once with any respiratory problem "Treat for pneumonia until the evidence proves otherwise." An antibiotic might also help with the anus issue. I think I remember you posting about this in the past. I had a pinkie with a gaping anus who eventually died. At the time I had no clue as to what it's problem was, but in hindsight I suspected proctitis (bacterial infection that targets the anus and rectum).

Could he have aspirated formula? What exactly is he eating now?

I'm feeding him Fox Valley 20/50 formula.

I read in some of my rehab materials about Vitamin c being helpful, but I don't have it with me to provide you a reference.

yes that is a great AB...I prefer BAYTRIL..it is the big dog!
Metacam is the pain aid and antiinflammatory most of us use! jmo
Is baby still on formula, if so add i/4 to 1/3 Dannon All Natural Vanilla or Plain Yogurt...no fat free, no sugarless...you want whole yogurt.
Good luck at vets...:grouphug
:bowdown Thank you!

EDIT: PBJ and NIN are fast typer...bullets!!!

No thankfully I'm confident I have not aspirated him. No bubbles out the nose. He's been a very good eater.

Perhaps the Baytril will knock out any possible anus/rectum infection too? That is really interesting about your situation. I saw another posting with a picture that looked nearly identical to Alpo's anus but that was not me... I'm new to your forum.

This vet helped save his life with the Capstar and he offered just to call in the antibiotic if I'd prefer but was willing to take a quick look at him either way. Thank you for all of the warnings, though!

Any advice on yogurt or anything to help counteract the possibility of diarrhea?

Thank you for the Metacam and Dannon advice too.

Baby is 11-12 wks old not off formula, not interested in any solids either yet.

I will let you know how Alpo does, so you'll have feedback on your advice. I thank you so much for helping out us "Newbies" to rehabbing. We need the handholding!

I just looked up neosporin, and it had quite a list of cautions. If the objective is simply to keep the anus lubricated, please consider using petroleum jelly instead. Neosporin is for short-term use. A baby doesn't have to aspirate to develop pneumonia (aspiration pneumonia yes but not pneumonia in general). Please ask your vet about the neosporin and meds for repiratory infection.

Argh.... I will definitely ask about these 2 items and note the short term usage on the Neosporin in the future. I used it because I thought it would help address any localized infection causing the swelling and help lubricate too. So glad that God has these little ones in His care, despite our efforts and mistakes!

I'm not sure, but my vet recommended A&D ointment, although not for your situation, perhaps a rehabber or your vet can advise.

Good luck and praying for a positive outcome.

Hi, everyone. So sorry for my delay in posting an update, and thank you for all of your help!

Vet visit was successful. Alpo is on Baytril .5cc's every 12 hours. He woke up yesterday unable to breathe at all out of his nose. I put him over a facial steamer and that cleared those nostrils completely so he could eat. I highly recommend the steamer for all congested squirrels! He also loved the warmth on his face. I believe the antibiotic is starting to work for him.

As far as his anus problem, we are hopeful that the Baytril will also help with whatever may be going on there. It was difficult to diagnose that problem. I have started A&D ointment to help lube for the passing of feces (otherwise it clogs and crusts over). The vet approved continued use of Neosporin as well.

Lastly, he has developed white "scab-like" things on his tail and his fur will come out in clumps once he (or I) pick at the scab. Ivermectin .1 cc every 7 days for 3-4 treatments has been administered. If anyone has any feedback on this scablike condition, that would be wonderful too.

Thanks, everyone!

Newbiehuntsville—great news about the vet visit! So glad Alpo is getting the medication. Oh dear—couldn’t breathe through the nose, good idea about the facial steamer. Oh wow—so the A&D ointment, great.

Oh geeze, a scab on the tail—that much ivermectin? I’m not sure that is right????? I thought it was much longer in between dosing, please check with a TSB rehabber on that one. Please!

Can you post a picture of the scablike condition?

I am very leary of ivermectin...this is a very dangerous drug and TSB has seen many sad results, death being one.
Please, if this is something that was recommended to you by a novice...stop all use NOW!
There are safer ways to treat parasites.
Did you see fleas?
The white scabs maybe old bites... Ivermectin makes my hair stand on end...scarey!
The baytril will most likey clear up both his infections..I was actually thinking that the breathing issues are connected to the anal infection...and stem from that.
:thumbsup Glad you were able to see a vet, but I am concerned with the parasite treatment! I am a known worrier though...:dono

* did you get the name I pmed you...please keep her info, she is a good back up resource...

I'm fairly certain the Ivermectin dose is too high but don't have my books with me here at the office. I'll check dosages on both meds later this afternoon. Please hold off on administering until I do!
