Is the baby injured? How old? Please keep it warm, dark and quiet, I'm not a rehabber, one should be here soon.

The info i gave might have been too vague. From what I see i believe that it shouldn't be classified as a baby it looks to be around 8-10 weeks old. It seems to be injured in one of its front legs. I haven't been able to capture it yet cause it hides under cars.

Do you have a picture of the baby?
Do you think you can trap it with like a blanket or something and think fleece or cotton t-shirt before like a towel.
Or a have a heart cage?
Or another member, suggested bribing it with food?
Just keep refreshing your screen ok!

What do you think is wrong with the front leg?

I tried bribing it with food which didn't work, I was able to get it to drink some water though. I tried to trap it with a towel but it was struggling so hard i thought it might get hurt. I will try to get a picture of it. It seems to be hurt in general, not quite sure what the exact injury is though. It has a sibling which is on a tree in front of my house and this one seems unable to climb the tree because it hangs around the base of it.

OK, so are you going to get the picture now? I will wait if you want me to? What do you think is wrong with the leg, can you see it? If you capture, do you have a box with a lid with holes in it.
Don't forget to refresh your screen, ok.

When getting ready to trap please be prepared with some kind of a fleece or tshirt to keep warm until you can get to the rehabber.
Always think:
WARM, DARK, QUIET
You can also make a "rice buddy" will explain later, OK.
Do NOT try to feed the squirrel, the squirrel should be kept warm, especially if injured.
Make sure you have a box or a cat carrier or something like that? Do you have something like that?

I was planning to use a shoe box, do you think that would work?
Pointy Tale

Another member suggested that although the squirrel would fit, it would not be the best, to confined. It should be something like a cat carrier, do you have something like that?
clvnoo1
10-04-2009, 06:01 PM
No, i do not have a cat carrier.

So like do you have a rubbermaid container, or like a big plastic container WITH LOTS OF HOLES like the size of like a xerox box... something like that? And it must Have HOLES, LOTS OF HOLES, did I say HOLES

Is this squirrel located at a Park?
clvnoo1
10-04-2009, 06:07 PM
I believe i have a xerox box. Were not quite located at a park but this is a big place with a lot of trees.
Pointy Tale
10-04-2009, 06:09 PM
Well a xerox box would only be very Short term, he/she could chew their way through it.
I was only asking about the park, because we have another member in Queens and thought she could help, but she's not online anyway.

It is getting dark now, do you see the squirrel anymore? Or a general idea of where he/she may have went?
clvnoo1
10-04-2009, 06:21 PM
I just went to take a look down my whole block and unfortunately i don't see it anywhere.
Pointy Tale
10-04-2009, 06:23 PM
OK then, so let's talk about the injury, OK? So when you saw the squirrel did you something specifically wrong with the leg, like blood or just favoring it?
clvnoo1
10-04-2009, 06:26 PM
There was no blood, he seemed to be just favoring the leg when he walked.
Pointy Tale
10-04-2009, 06:29 PM
OK, do you think that you can make food and fresh water available to the squirrel for tomorrow in hopes that he/she will return?
I will be right back, I have to step away from the computer for about 15 minutes, but will beback, ok
clvnoo1
10-04-2009, 06:31 PM
Yes i will be able to provide it with water which I have been doing so far. As for the matter of food can you tell me what I should leave out for it to eat?

Hi clvnoo1—First I want to thank you so very much for caring this squirrel—it is truly wonderful, most people would not even seek out help—I am so grateful and Welcome to The Squirrel Board!
Were you able to take any pictures of the squirrel—or had he already been gone at that point?
When did you first see him? You said he seemed to be favoring it a bit, but couldn’t see any fresh wound, like from a cat/dog or anything right? Do you think it could have been hit by a car? Were you able to see if it was ever able to climb a tree?
I know it is dark right now, so the little one should not be out, but if you had time, did you want to make one more sweep around to make sure he’s not hiding under a shrub or something (just a thought).
You can provide Unsalted nuts in or out shell, like almonds, hazelnuts, or even peanuts or walnuts. I’ve also heard they love avocados, if you have any?

OK, I see that you have signed off. I will check back with you later and then again tomorrow. Please keep me posted on the little one so that we can get him/her to rehabber right away, and again, I thank you so much for caring about this little one.
If do you get to catch him, please remember, no loud noises-Warm, Dark, Quiet and No Food once you get him until a rehabber gives you instructions to do so.
And, if you have pictures or will get pictures, please post this will help the rehabber too.
Again, I will be back on later to check in, so you can post a reply and I will get it. I wish you well and again I thank you.

Yes I made one more round to check for the little one and wasn't able to find him. I have almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts for it so i will leave them out tomorrow in the morning.
For the matter of it being attacked by a cat, it could be very likely because we do have a lot of stray cats and people letting their cats out.
As for the matter of having ever seen it climb? No I haven't seen it climb, it can only cling to the base of the tree. I saw one of its siblings about the same size having no problems climbing up a tree. So I believe that his inability to get up the tree isn't due to his size or age and is related to his injured front feet.
I might not be able to get on until 5pm tomorrow due to classes. I will be able to get on after and to look around the neighborhood for the little one. Any information you can leave me to get in touch with a rehabber as soon as i find him will be very helpful.
There is no need to thank me Pointy Tale it is the right thing to do. On the other hand I would like to Thank You for the assistance you have provided me here at The Squirrel Board. I wish you well as well and once again Thank You.

clvnoo1—I believe island rehabber, a TSB administrator/rehabber has sent you a private message on this board with rehabber contact information—please check your private messages, do you know how to do that? I hope so. Island rehabber can and will be able to provide the most useful information and is in NY area. I will keep your little guy in my thoughts that he found shelter in the night.
No problem about you not being on until later in the evening—just please if you find the little one, remember WARM, DARK, QUIET—Please this is important, OK. In any event, can you please just let me know the outcome, whether or not you’ve spotted the little guy or not and what happened? I always worry so.
Yes, I wanted to and believe thank you is essential—many people would just walk away and not give it a second thought, you are giving help. I thank you sincerely.
Be well and do well in school tomorrow!
PS—I had started another thread to get more “coverage” for your situation the link is here (but forgive me if it doesn’t work, I’m not a good linker):
The Squirrel Board > Help Needed! > Non Life Threatening Help Needed > Looking for rehabber around Queens, NYC (http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?p=446638#post446638)
Where in Queens are you located? I'm sending you a PM with my info, please send your contact information back. I'll be home until about noon and may be able to help you. Hope to hear from you soon!
clvnoo1, I know you're at school until later today, but if you can get the baby in a large box with holes poked into it for air, that will be the first step. Keep him/her warm and quiet and then PM me or Island Rehabber - one of us will work to get the baby from you personally or by way of another TSB member. We'll see that he gets medical attention and to a safe environment.
The important thing is that you get the baby inside, out of the cold and away from predators. Please let us know when you catch him/her and we'll take it from there.
Thanks. Please keep us posted.
