View Full Version : URGENT! Little girl attacked by 2 dogs

Guys, I need a rehabber in the Houston area desperately! My boyfriend just chased two dogs off of a gray squirrel. He came and got me and she was still in the middle of the road. I picked her up gently in a towel and brought her in. It looks like at least one leg is disloacted or broken, and who knows what kind of internal damage she suffered. She is resting on my stomach wrapped loosely in the towel right now. Her breathing is rapid and shallow, some blood around her mouth, and very still. I need an experienced person to take her-this is way over my head. Please help! I can come to you, or meet you.

Oh and not a baby but a pretty young adolescent. 5-6 mo is my best guess, but that's not saying much!

I can come get her or if you want to meet me half way.
Where in Pearland are you? I'm going to need to go grab a carrier on the way. Is there a walmart nearby we can meet at?
I'm going to pm YOU my phone #

Ok, I'll give a quick update and then turn this over to LMC.
I just met with LMC and passed little baby girl on to her (relief!).
Baby spent the past few hours cuddled up with a rice buddy and resting in my closet (dark, quiet, and away from drafts). I checked on her periodically and noted that she was switching positions on her own, which gave me a little hope that she wasn't as injured as I thought initially.
When I got to the meeting place, LMC and I peeked in at her, and she looked a TON better than when I picked her up after the attack. I think she was coming out of shock. I'm fairly certain she at least has a broken leg or two.
My boyfriend noticed that two dogs were going at her in the middle of the road down the street from my house, so he chased them off (they turned on him!! He had to retreat to his truck and find something to throw at them to make them go away). Once they were gone he called me and said he found a squirrel that might be Penelope (my squirrel, who got out last week never to be seen since) and to come quickly. I tore out of the house, only to find it wasn't my own baby, but still one who needed help. So I scooped her up and knew that her only hope was for me to get on here as soon as possible and find a rehabber that could help her.
I want to thank you guys for the support and quick response in a true emergency (special thanks to Jackie in Tampa and LookMomChickens!!! You ladies rock!!!)
Now my part in this precious girl's story is done. All I can do know is pray for her.
Thanks again for the support, all! LMC--I know you'll keep us posted and take good care of her. Best of luck!

HOME!
She is BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you Amanda for saving her from the dogs & and bringing her in from the street!
I will post pictures soon...
She definitely has a broken leg, left back leg. All of her other reflexes are good - even gave me a fuss!! :thumbsup
There are a few puncture wounds, not bloody, but pretty big... working on tracking down some antibiotics. Her mouth is a little bloody as well, going to wipe it off with a soft q-tip.
I have 1.5mg metacam on hand... she weighs 7.1g/199oz. I'll weigh her again to make sure my scale isn't off. I'm assuming she's about 4-5 months old? Tiny little thing...
She's wrapped in fleeced and snuggled with a rice buddy until the NRF can get here with my heating pad.

JUST A NOTE?REMINDER...that 1.5 Metacam is not the smallest dose Metacam...it is more for cats than hampsters...will work fine, but 3 times as strong as the .5
just a heads up!!!!
:thumbsup
glad you have her...thanks for the fast rescue!!!!!:bowdown
sending prayers and good vibes:grouphug
karo, log cabin or molasses on the gums may help with the shock.

Great to hear! I've been eagerly waiting to read your post before going to bed tonight. She is a little beauty, isn't she? I'm so sad for her... I hope the vet can help her.
No need to thank me-my role in this was so small. It was unfathomable for me to leave her to die in the street. When I saw her I really thought I was simply picking her up to give her a warm, dry, safe place to live out her last few minutes of life. But I'm so SO glad that this board exists so I knew exactly where to go so she'd have a fighting chance.
You're the one who went WAY out of your way to come get her, and the one who is looking after her now, so thank YOU!!! I am happy that you were so willing to help her.
I'll be dying for news of her tomorrow :poke *hint hint* :)
Drive safe!

Such an improvement from when I first saw her!
Are you sure that nothing is wrong with one of her front legs? It seemed a little weird when she was on the ground. But you're braver than I-I was too afraid of hurting her to do much with her. Thanks for the pics...again, good luck!

I've just gotten a better look at her.. it appears that both her left front and left back legs are broken. I'm also concerned about spinal damage.. something just isn't right.

if it's spinal...dex will be good choice...but advise that metacam has been given...the two do not mix. note time that metacam was given.

Wow You ladies did an amazing job. I hope this sweet little girl pulls through. This is a great place for lovers of Squirrels. When I think of the dangers that are out there it makes me never want to let my 2 babies go in the spring when they are grown. But I know I have to. It wouldn't be right to never let them live their lives as squirrels were meant to. I only hope they stay nearby and come to visit so I know they're okay.
