I was wondering if anyone has a squirrel with diabetes? If so what are the signs and symptoms? I'm still trying to figure out whats wrong with my flier. He is about 1 1/2 and he lost one back leg when he was a baby(he chewed it off) but i think it was damaged/infected when he fell out of the nest.I brought him to the vet and did everything i could, but he ended up chewing his whole leg off.Now a year later after he had been fine and healthy, he has begun to chew on the good back leg. I just don't know why he is doing this! I thought he had MBD so i changed his diet and i i think it has helped him with his other symptoms he had of fatigue, patchy hair, lost weight. He is very active now and has gained a little weight.I just don't know why he is chewing his leg.

I don't know what the symptoms are for diabetes, but it can be diagnosed from a blood test or two....glucose & insulin, I believe.

Did you get in touch with Christina Clark at Chris's Squirrel and More to find a vet? If not...do it or start making phone calls to exotic vet specialists & ask if they have any experience with Southern Flying Squirrels. You may run into one problem...I believe that SFS are illegal in CT. Another option would be to get in touch with Island Rehabber or Tomo...they use Dr. Pilney. I don't know if he has dealt with flyers or not, but he may have a recommendation. (They are in NY, however.) If PA would be closer for you, I believe we have a few rehabbers on the Eastern side of the state that might know a vet that could help.

I really believe that it's in your baby's best interest to get to a vet as soon as possible. JMO :grouphug

A telltale sign of diabetes in any animal is excessive thirst and excessive urination--my understanding.
