I had two squirrels together but noticed the younger one was sucking on the older ones penis and quickly separated them but it was too late. A scab formed on the older squirrels penis and I check him every 2 hours or so to wash it to remove the scab and to apply ointment. I woke up this morning to find his penis REALLY swollen and his entire abdomen swollen and hard. I quickly put him in a warm bath from his waist down and removed the scab. When I tried to massage on the area to encourage him to pee, he gave a loud squeal and started biting the wash cloth I had him in. He did pee a little but I am scared that he may have already started to get an infection. As soon as I put him in the warm water, the swelling went down and his abdomen area was no longer hard and when I touched the area again, he didn't squeal. The older squirrel suffered brain damage and is a non-releasable and I am currently trying to get into classes in order to keep him. Is there something that I can give him in case an infection has started? I have Sulfa Trim on hand but not sure if it is used for this kind of thing. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

According to Wild Mammal Babies, Sulfatrim is "an excellent choice to treat for enteric and urinary tract infection." Is there a possibility your baby is nursing himself (since you separated them and the issue continues)? I don't know what kinmd of ointment you're using, but some ointments should not be applied to body orifices as they can cause, rather than eliminate, irritation. I'd use plain old petroleum jelly. Good luck!

To be honest, I don't think that he is self sucking. I have watched him for long periods of time and he is either eating, running around or sleeping. I separated them 2 days ago and the worst part of the scab has come off but there is just enough of a scab left over that when the ointment comes off, it seals back up again. I am using triple antibiotic ointment on him but he runs around so much that it is quickly wiped off and I have to apply it again. I am also worried about applying too much ointment because I do not want it gobbed on there and not allow him to pee.

Thank You both for your help. Since he does suffer from brain damage, I worry about him more then I do with my other little ones because he doesn't always let you know when something bothering him. :thankyou
