Elissa is 1 and 1 month old. I think she is in heat. She smells sour and is acting very weird. Is this normal? Just wondering for this is my first heat with her at 1 year old.

Squirrels (at least grays) go into heat for only about eight hours a season (the guys have to be on their toes!). More info would help anbout the "weird" behavior and especially the smell.

I noticed the smell when my pet squirrel came into heat the first time; at first, I thought she'd peed herself and it went bad. It was a sour, musky odor.

Thats true in the wild PB but in captivity they will ovulate till they copulate. Or at least for a few weeks. Most people with pet squirrels will tell you that twice a year they become evil little monsters for 3 to 5 weeks. Not every female will get PMS but about 80% will. Beware lol.:hidechair

Yep. It definitely lasts longer with indoor pet squirrels.

Maybe so, but my non-releasable female hasn't gone into heat at all, as far as I can tell, Peaches, much to the displeasure of her non-neutered male cage mate. You sure they aren't just getting bitchy for no good reason? I've seen it in other species . . ..

With her being in heat can it cause her not to eat or lose weight?

Her eating habits have changed dramtically.......is that normal when they are in heat?

Squirrel PMS.. I love it. I've raised and released squirrels for years, and it seems that twice a year, yes, they do become little fluffy-tailed nightmares. And their pee takes on a musky note for sure. I have a 3 y/o male right now who "perfumes" himself in pee when my girl squirrels are in season. Funny, he has no idea that the girls are not impressed!
