i have a few basic books that i think are great and i rely on
the first is
1. squirrel rehabilitation handbook by shirley and allen casey from wildagain wildlife rehabilitaion.
i follow this book pretty much for squirrels
2. wild mammal babies the first 48 hours and beyond by irene ruth and debra gode. i come back to this book over and over, i do not like the formula mixture but the dosing charts are awesome to have readily on hand. there are some typos when it comes to age and feeding schedules so be careful, a must have if you rehab mammals and worth every penny.
3. willowbrook wildlife center pharmaceutical index third edition published by willowbrook wildlife foundation.
give's mg per kg, dosing info comes in handy i use it constantly also.
i would love to know what books you all rely on and why?

I use the wild mammal babies book and the songbird diet index (awesome book with cards for hundreds of songbirds giving you ideas on what to feed and what proportion of fruits and insects the bird eats). I want to get the principles of wildlife rehabilitation book sometime, but really haven't been able to justify spending a hundred dollars on it! I looked it over at Chris's stand at the conference, it is good, but I don't see myself using it like I do the mammal babies book.

your right about the nwra book, i barely use it but i definatly needed it to pass my state test.
i do on occasion go to it for minimum standards when i'm thinking of building a new enclosure.
or i have forgotten what that bone is called

IMHO, Principles by the NWRA is essential for any rehabber to have on hand and should be read cover to cover. Wild Mammal Babies is wonderful for quick reference to most common meds and their dosages.

I use Wild Mammal Babies most often, because of that excellent meds section. I also have the NWRA book which I love, and Shirley Casey's book which is excellent but with no Index, a pain in the a** to use. (I got one of the first printings; hopefully she's added an index by now.)
But you know what I couldn't live without? A tiny little spiral-bound pamphlet called "Hand Rearing Infant Tree Squirrels" by PC Hanes, and the accompanying pamphlet "Injury and Illness in Tree Squirrels". The feeding charts and Aging Characteristics sections in "Hand Rearing...." are invaluable to me. I find myself consulting them at the beginning of each baby season just to be sure I am feeding enough, and often enough.

:bowdown :bowdown Mary Cummins slim little notebook was my BIBLE during my first few years of rehabbing (2004 --) until Wild Mammal Babies was published. It is excellent, IMHO, and for years I still referred back to it every season to make sure I was feeding often enough! The only thing I would caution you about with this booklet is the formula info. SInce that was written, we have had more twists and turns and switches with recommendations for what to feed baby squirrels, especially pinkies. Cummins is Esbilac all the way, but personally many of us prefer Esbilac until eyes open, then a mixture of Esbilac/Fox Valley or pure FV 20/50. Also,I can't remember if Cummins recommends mixing infant baby rice cereal into the squirrel formula as they grow, but that is no longer recommended.
