here's stating the obvious...

i googled it... you probably already know these details - it's from their website.

http://lloydinc.com/pdfs/Vetalac_Canine.pdf

I cut pieces out to make this shorter.

Increased fat absorption and utilization:
The milk fat globules in reconstituted Veta-Lac Canine powder
are remarkably similar to those in bitch’s milk. The fat globules
in Veta-Lac Canine powder are microencapsulated. This
microencapsulation process combines fat and protein in
Veta-Lac Canine powder to create fat globules of a consistent,
uniform small size.

Reduced diarrhea:
In a comparison of stool samples from puppies fed reconstituted
Veta-Lac Canine powder and puppies fed other milk replacer
formulations, the Veta-Lac puppies have a firmer, more
consistent stool, while the other puppies typically have soft,
runny stools.

Microscopic comparisons show a large amount of undigested
fat in the stool of puppies fed other milk replacers. Stools from
puppies fed Veta-Lac demonstrate an overall absence of
microscopic fat....

....More predictable administration:
When mixed with water, Veta-Lac Canine powder blends into a
smooth emulsion. Unlike other milk replacers, the protein and
fat of Veta-Lac do not stick to the sides of the nursing bottle,
so all the nutritional value is available to the puppy.

Equally important, the fat in
bitch’s milk and in Veta-Lac
Canine powder contains a
large surface area to volume
ratio which promotes the ability
of the digestive enzymes to
penetrate and properly digest
the fat.
The large fat micelles in other
milk replacers may not be
digested or completely
absorbed. This fat remains in
the gastrointestinal tract acting
as a lubricant which decreases
the transit time and can result
in diarrhea.

This is interesting! I can't wait for input! Good job GS1!

I googled:D , got their website and their blurb on their own formula - don't know what other people think of it.

The fat molecules thing is interesting - if thats what's changed with the new esbilac formula - but i've no idea if it is or not.

but if esbilac can be homemade then maybe that's another idea although 4s thinks that maybe it's ok.

I guess the research never stops.

QUOTE:

Actually, you could make your own formula pretty easily. However, why take the chance when Esbilac works so well? I suspect the heat may be the problem with a lot of our sick babies this year, not the Esbilac per se, unless it is expired. While still a powder, the Esbilac is unlikely to grow bacteria because it's dry. Yet, the nutrients could degrade quickly in warm conditions. Perhaps even (unopened) powdered Esbilac should be stored in the fridge in summer.

The only thing that concerns me about the ingredients is the "animal fat." With pet products, this is likely the dregs of the dregs: nasty bits of "animal" left over from making other things--ears, noses, snippets of things--then thrown in a vat and rendered. I suppose it might be okay, what do you guys think?

The point about the fat is important. But also the milk proteins are a problem with digestibility. I know some of our rehabbers use Fox Valley and say their babies never get diarrhea. Has anyone tried Goats Milk Esbilac? Goat milk has a more digestible form of milk protein.

I think Anne uses Goat's Milk Esbilac & uses it pretty exclusively, but I'm not 100% sure.

When the don't list the source of animal fat I am extremely suspicious. I would be afraid to compromise the babies health. Even with the current questionable issues with Esbilac I will continue to use it.

I've never used GME myself and don't know anyone who has. I know Chris at Squirrels & More recommends it.

I just found it weird that I am SURE POSITIVE that these vets carried the esbilac powder as well as my feed lot. And now all my vets have is Veta-Lac powder..2 of the 3 vets have the liquid esbilac and the feed store now only has "newborn"

Wasnt sure about it and Im not partial to animal fat we wont buy certain feeds for our other animal b/c sheep and goats dont eat other animals. and I dont think Squirrels are out their chomping on pigs.

I have found that the animal fat tends to be pig and dogs cannot even properly digest pork:shakehead

The other two rehabbers in this area use GME and seem to like it. I never changed over to it because I never had any trouble with Esbilac - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But I will be doing a lot of reading before I place my next order. One of the rehabbers here was raising 4 baby greys on Esbilac because her GME order didn't come in - she has lost 3 of the four. And she's a good very experienced rehabber. Due to the weather, I couldn't go down and get the other baby tonight, but will tomorrow if needed. (My Esbilac is the older processing.) They've also had problems with the baby skunks.

Some rehabbers have had success in doing the 1:3 ratio and adding a little bit of baby oatmeal cereal.
Also, this person spoke to the Pet Ag people and was informed that once their best dilution ratio was worked out they would post the information on this site...

I'm going to try to post this on all the Esbilac-related threads, but Shirley Casey (ewildagain.org) is coming out with an extensive article today or tomorrow on this problem. In the meantime, she states that at her facility they have been having the best luck with a 1: 2.25 or 1: 2.5 ratio of powder to water.

I know I am digging up an old thread, but I too wonder if anyone else had used the Veta-lac. It is what I ahve used on my last 2 squirrels. I assumed (yes, I know, assuming is TERRIBLE) that it was the same thing as Esbilac, just a different label for vets.:dono

Here have been my experinces:
The vet that gave me the Veta-lac called me with an apporx 4-wk old squirrel, which I named Edith. I mixed the formula according to the directions on the container. Added heavy whipping cream and honey.
Edith ate the formula really well from the start. She went back and forth with a little bit of loose stools a few times while on this formula, but nothing serious. Sometimes I think the loose stools were from the veggie baby foods I would give her. She did have one instance of a UTI, but I think she was off the formula by that time. She was off the formula a couple of weeks before she passed away from a possible spinal injury.

Weezie was also approx 4-weeks old when I got her from a different vet. She also took to the formula right away. I mixed it the same for her at first. SHe is now about 8-9wks old and I change it up a bit now by adding baby foods with cereal, yogart, whipping cream, and/or dissolving rodent block in it. Weezie grew by leaps and bounds, but does seem behind on a few things. While her stools have been perfect, I did have to stimulate her to potty until she was 6-7wks.

I raised my first two squirrels on Espilac last year and while they survived to release, I had a hard time getting them to eat it at first. I assumed it was b/c they were used to momma's milk. :shakehead Ahh the nieve first time squirrel foster momma. ;) My mom who raises small dogs, said I can tell you why they don't eat it....it tastes terrible. Yes, this means my mother has tasted Espilac. I was adding everything I could to get them to eat it. I did eventually figure out how to make it tolerable, and they were released on halloween last year

I have not had the first problem with my last two eating the Veta-lac. It smells kinda like vanilla coffee creamer. I don't drink coffee, so I haven't tried it as a creamer...yet. ;). I'm not an expert or even a rehabber, I'm just sharing my experience with Veta-lac. :D

Alcippe, all I can tell you is that IMHO, Fox Valley Day One squirrel formula (32/40 for 3 wks & under, 20/50 after that until weaning) is cheaper and smells way better than Esbilac, and doesn't require that you add anything to it because almost every squirrel loves it from the first sniff.

I was not paid by Fox Valley Nutrition for this testimonial. Swear to God. :D

Oh I'm convinced the FV is in a league of its own, just from what I've read here on TSB. I want to order some to have on hand for the next baby I might get.
From my experince, Veta-lac is a better choice than Espilac as a "OMG I have a baby squirrel and I gotta feed it NOW, while I wait for FV." I'm not sure if you *have* to add the stuff that I did, I just did b/c that is what I HAD to do with the Espilac. ;). I'm not sure how it compares to Just Born, b/c I've never used the Just Born.
