One of my kids (Cutters) came in this morning with what appears to be a begining or end stage warble. Can anyone tell me...
I left the pictures large on purpose.

ok I just got a new picture that answers my question. Being the throat area I'm going to have to do something about it.

Could be...bot fly!
Not the greatest pic,:poke brib her and get us a better pic!
I have bot flys everywhere...lots of rain here lately!
Good thing is they are NOT DANGEROUS to sq unless too many are clumped together in arm pit area and cut off circulation to a limb by stretching skin too tight!
I do not recomend removing, although some insist on it, not a good idea. They're lifecycle in the sq is fast and not a bother to the sq!
Good Luck...they are yucky looking!

The vet just told me to use : black "drawing salve" (Ichthammol ointment)
?? any advice? Jackie if you dont think I should intervene being the throat area I'm gonna let her go..shes having a fit!! I thought that the throat area would be tricky?
Have you had them in the throat and they recover? Normally I wouldnt do anything.

:wave123 If it is a bot fly...could it be that it is now out and just the hole is there, or is it swollen like there still is something in there???

A botfly warble is very distinctive. There's a little hole, usually in the center, and if you watch you can see the warble occasionally stick its nose out to breathe. As big as a warble can get, I do think in the throat location it COULD cause problems.
To me, it looks more like an abscess though.

I also was torn thinking absess? I left her go she chewed my window apart:D
I know she'll be back to eat, tomorrow trouble is when they come theres nobody here to help me get a hold of them.
Poor girl was so upset with me for traping her in...she kept grunting! She is one of my 11 gram pinks.

Very upset with me! Do the absesses usually resolve, now I wished I had kept her and gave her a dose of baytril.

bot fly warbles have no fur around them, so i too think abcess...give him 4 doses of smz and he'll be ok.

baytril is good, put it on a hazelnut or pecan {something she loves...] avacado and let her get sticky and she will lick it off and that is a good enough dose...I do it all the time with wilds...
the warble causes fever at the site and hair loss accompanies it. So I am thinking this is a tooth abcess. If she is super healthy, she will actually recover with out doing anything.
Bot fly is fast to leave, the life cycle as a parasite is rapid...so either way, in a week she will be ok!:thumbsup
It's mating season and the trees are full of eager fighting males...:soapbox

That crescent-shaped wound doesn't look like a warble hole, but the pics weren't really clear (I know it was hard with a wild sq). Bots are very distinctive at this stage. The squirrel will scratch at them, the fur will be gone, and there's often drainage from the hole. Perhaps the sq scratched at the hole and made the wound? If it's a bot then it will resolve by itself unless it starts to block eating/breathing.
If it's an abscess it could be tooth-related, or a wound from a fight, although those seem to always heal by themselves in the wild. I don't see any drainage, which is concerning if it's an abscess; it could have closed up. And the throat is a bad place to have an abscess. My two cents is this one needs a trip to the vet unless it improves very quickly or you can definitely determine it's a bot.

A vet in Pa would be a wonderful thing to have, even to the legal they are next to zero,
taking a fecal to or get advice over the phone is one thing.
I have to do this by myself or not at all.

"If" I can get her to come in again, Im gonna try my hardest to get antibiotics into her.

Did the swollen area seem hard or soft? And was there any drainage?

I couldnt get a hold of her, if I could have I would have a better idea what Im dealing with. It did not appear to have drainage?
It appears to be centered, more throat than mouth area.
If I can get her in tomorrow I'll let you know..I dont believe I will see her until then.
Thanks for all your help.
