View Full Version : Badly sunburned new borns
I just received two pinkies that were left out on a woman's concrete driveway all day. They are horribly sunburned. Both bright red and extremely dry to the touch. I don't want to chill them or put a greasy goo all over them, but the pain must be awful. They must have been born this morning or last night and fallen from the nest. They only weigh 9 grams each.
What can be used to rehydrate their skin and possible sooth pain? Aloe juice? Any ideas?

Oh goodness I am so very sorry to hear this. What are people thinking.
I would say Aloe, but I'm not an expert.
You have my prayers and well wishes for these beautiful little lives, I pray for them to live despite their start.

OMG, Those poor precious teeny babies. I would use Aloe as well. Anything greasy would just hold in the heat. GOOD LUCK and many PRAYERS coming ya'lls way.

I would say aloe. I use that for my own sunburn.
But if you use commercial gel, be aware that it sometimes dries a little stiff, though. My first thought was maybe to spritz them with water if that happens, or maybe pat them gently with damp paper towel. MY NEXT THOUGHT: maybe not -- the sunburn will make it harder for them to regulate temperature. Making them wet might make them chilly? On the other hand, being on heat might make them too hot without the relief of spritzing or cool cloths. :dono :dono :dono
Alternatively -- can you give metacam to pinkies?? (Jackie should know)
Pain relief of some kind is needed.
Watching their temperature also very important.
And extra hydration.
Those poor poor dears. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

I have a random thought, when we have a sunburn, we feel hot, or at least I do, would this be the same for pinkies?
Don't know if it matters and can be disregarded, just a thought.
And, when I mentioned aloe earlier, I thought from the plant leaf itself.

Poor babies! From what I can tell, aloe is recommended by most, also cortisone cream by some, but nothing with benzocaine, and nothing greasy--butter, vaseline, etc.. Hydration is essential. I wish I could help more!

Yes, fever is an issue, and several sites recommend cold compresses, but then you have to worry about body temp.

Poor little tykes. They make mine that is grey and not as squirmy look super healthy :sanp3. I would treat them like they are burn victims, if only I knew what to do with a burn victim pinkie :dono. I agree that putting ointment on will make it worse. I would start trying things and see if you find something that works. I think the spritzing with water while on heat may relieve some of the discomfort. Never used Aloe, so don't know about that :dono.
No metacam for pinkies. Young squirrels (I think under 10 weeks but could be wrong on the age) should not get Metacam.
Good luck with the tiny little tykes. Remember, lots of fluids for them because they will be pretty dehydrated!

OMG Praying for your little pinkies. I too would think aloe the plant. Just try to think of what a human baby may use??? Let me go check that out now that I mentioned it...I just went on line see if some of this helps...remember this is for a human baby...they do mention to sunburn can lead to dehydration...
Step 1Access the seriousness of the burn. Minor sunburn will cause redness and slight swelling. More serious burns will be a darker shade of red, blistered and very swollen.
Step 2Call your doctor to let him know about the sunburn. If he suspects that it is a serious burn, he will want you to bring the baby in for evaluation.
Step 3Give the baby plenty of fluids. Sunburn can lead to dehydration, which is why it is important to offer the baby plenty of breast milk or formula.
Step 4Soak a washcloth in cold water. Place the washcloth on the sunburned areas for 10 minutes to offer pain relief. This will also reduce swelling.
Step 5Place the baby in a cool oatmeal bath. Aveeno offers an oatmeal bath treatment that can help provide relief for a sunburned infant. Massage the baby with aloe vera following the bath.
Step 6Provide a dose of over-the-counter pain relief medicine. Baby-strength acetaminophen can help the infant be less irritated by the burn.
Step 7Keep the baby in non-restrictive clothing. Place the infant in a loose T-shirt until the burn has healed.
man baby...

I am going to post this, but will probably regret it....
Just looked at the photo again.....
I honestly do not think that the babies will survive if they look as bad in person as in the photos. The kindest thing may be to euthanize... I know that will probably not be well received and I understand, it is your call and your squirrels. I just would hate for them to be in excruciating pain and then die from it. That would be a horrible way to go :sad. It is a tough call to make, I have been there, but sometimes it is the only thing we can offer is a peaceful end.

:goodpost A hard decision to make, but yes, sometimes that is the very kindest thing.
If not, keeping them comfortable it very important. Do I recall correctly that Children's Motrin can be given to sqs? If so, can it be given to pinkies? Can someone give Anne dosing info (if it is ok to give)

I am praying for those babies...what the hell is wrong with that woman!!!!:soapbox What a heartless thing to do..really pisses me off!!!:soapbox :soapbox
My mom use to use viniger and water compresses on me when I got sunburned...I smelled like an italian salad for awhile but it did help..
I always keep an aloe plant or 2 and when needed, I break off a piece and use it....also if you take the sharp edging off it, then slice one side all the way down and open the leaf (or whatever that is called)..you can then use it as a blanket to place over them...it won't chill them and they will have the aloe on them all the time....change the leaf every so often.......:grouphug

Everyones posts confirms..aloe:thumbsup {Anne has fresh growing in her yard} no metacam:thumbsup body temp very important, no grease, cooling with water is good but while on heat, hydration a must, and unless they are cooked internally {and they would be screaming} I would not euthanize.... They are eating strong. I have had some serious sunburns. I think pain relief will come from cooling them and keeping skin hydrated, I think Nancys oatmeal bath is exactly what I was looking for Anne.:thumbsup
Not sure about the motrin though?:dono
:poke put the phone on the charger! :D
SRBT, I totally agree, if they are in pain and beyond help, but I really think their strong appetite leans toward giving them all the above first.:grouphug
I wish they could tell us....

OK, phone on charger! Have extracted aloe juice into my hand and rolled babies in juice. Have covered them with gauze dampen with Ringer's (Thanks, Mitzi) have been re-hydrating with Pedalyte. They are drinking very well. Time will tell. Hate to think they are in pain, but can only euthanize once-can give small amounts for liquid every hour. Who needs sleep?tinfoil :D

just my 2 cents, when you have a burn and you apply warmth it seems to amplify the burning sensation/pain. example, you burn your finger and do dishes afterwards, it really hurts, my point is to keep them warm but not on the heating pad to keep the pain down.... does this make sense? then again you probably know all this so I'll shut-up now :thumbsup
Mutt and Jeff (Jackie named them last night) are still with us :D Last night, they both got Pedalyte on the odd hour and formula on the even hours. Applied aloe and new Ringer's solution with each hydration session. They are fighting their little hearts out and the crying has finally stopped each time they are touched or wiggle. Skin is still dry to the touch though. So I plan on doing this all again today. Going to take it one hour and then one day at a time. Just so tired---Chas can't help with these babies-he is terrorified of even breathing on them, but at least he has taken over with the rest of our babies:jump

Oh Anne, this is wonderful news...bless your heart.
Let me know if anyone has ever heard of this. I worked with a girl that had laser resurfacing done to her face and the doctor told her to put crisco on her face for healing and to keep it moisturized.
I just looked on the internet, and found this...see what you think:
Keep your face covered with the EMLA/VASELINE mixture for a least the first 48 hrs. You may then switch to plain while Crisco or Vaseline for the next 5 days, although most will remain using the EMLA/VASELINE mixture. Do not let your face dry out!
Here is the site if you want to see it for yourself...Just a thought...trying to think what might be healing for these little babies...:grouphug :grouphug
Nancy, don't think I can get the EMLA ( a cream that deadens the skin) as it is RX only. Used to have to use it to insert the Huber needle into my Mother's portacath for her blood disease treatments. Plus they are soooo very tiny :grouphug Maybe able to get it from my Mom's Oncologist? I am still reluctant to grease them up just now. Still having to almost force feed 10ths of a cc at a time. Thanks for the good suggestion.:D :D :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug

Just a thought...
When I had a really bad sunburn, I found that the only thing I could rest on comfortably was a microfleece throw - it's fuzzy, and the micro-fine fibers are apparently too tiny to cause irritation. If you don't have anything like this they sell the fabric by the yard at most fabric stores. It looks like short chinchilla fur.

I can hardly believe these two are still with us.....thanks to your extraordinary efforts.:bowdown :bowdown
I do swear by aloe vera gel (pure, no alcohol). It forms a protective coating over the skin as well as helping heal. I burn myself a lot, cooking and so on, and one time I got a really bad burn across the top of my hand when it accidentally touched the red-hot element in the oven. As an experiment, I treated the CENTER of the burn (the worst part) with aloe vera gel. The rest was left to heal on its own. The untreated parts healed with raised white scars that are still visible. The center part, treated with aloe, healed with no scar whatsoever....I mean all the pores came back, the little hairs grew back...it is perfect. Ever since then, I knew there was some magic in that aloe for burns.
So if you do the milk wash, I'd rinse it off after and reapply the aloe.
Like I said, make sure you get 100% pure gel, with no alcohol in it.
Just my two cents.

What about using Silver Sulfadiazine Cream. It is for 2nd degree burns. I remember reading that Smokebunny used this whenever she was treating a badly burned squirrel that was rescued from a wood burning stove.
You do have to get a RX for it.
I have used cows milk one time when burned. Seems like nothing helped except time. I will be praying for you and your babies.

CM918 Anne CM918 My prayers are with You, Mutt and Jeff. I know if you though they were suffering you would end it. Just keep up with what is working for you now. When I was 4 years old I got burned with hot grease. My mother put butter all over my arm. My chest was burned to, but my close covered it up.So no butter went their. By the time I made to the E.R. I had sever 3rd. degree burns all over my arm. My chest was 1st. two 2nd degree burns. The Dr said the burns were made worse because of the butter. Any kind of oil will cook and keep heat locked in. Even days after the burn if you put this on it will re-burn you. I swear by the aloe plant for relief of sunburn pain. Something Else you might check. Sever sunburns depletes your bode of Vitim E. The Dr. gave my sister these shots every day for a week, plus pain control. Hopes this helps a little. :bowdown You are doing such a wonderful job. I am praying for you and the little wons. I am sad to report that this afternoon little Jeff decided to fight no more. He quietly took his last breath about two o'clock. He was still the size of a newborn. Both boys lost their umbilical cords yesterday on their 10th day.
Mutt still courageously keeps licking like a Timex watch. When they first got here, to tell the truth, I didn't expect either of them to live 24 hours. What exceptional babies both of them and I am honored to have been here for Jeff as long as he stayed.

i dont know how i managed to miss this thread..........im a dermatologist, and could possibly have helped you out a little.............but whatever you are doing is fine............there is no specific therapy for a sunburn other than probably aspirin (mechanism of action unknown, in addition to pain relief).............im not sure about pain medication for baby squirrels though...........therapy is primarily supportive............if blisters have ruptured and peeling has started he is probably comfortable as far as the skin is concerned............if you see any new blisters, poke them with a 26G sterile hypodermic needle in the most dependent part, and gently compress with sterile gauze to drain the fluid...........the roof of the blister will form a natural dressing for the raw area underneath.........if skin has started peeling, and feels dry to touch, you can start using a mild non-scented moisturizer in a cream or lotion formulation..........if the skin is allowed to dry too much, it will begin to crack and fissure.........
im so so sorry that you lost jeff.........you must be very brave to take on all that you do...........i know i couldnt...........good luck, and keep us posted!! :grouphug

Looking at the pictures I am now realizing how very young they were. Even now, there is not much of an eyelid to protect the eyes. It occurs to me that if the sunrays were enough to do so much skin damage, they may well have done damage to the eyes as well, since it is almost like they had their eyes open to the sun. I hope not, but you should be alert to that when Mutt does open his eyes -- he may well have impaired or no vision. :( [Hoping for the best, though :thumbsup ]

Buddy'sMom, that's some thing I never thought about-the sun baking their little eye lids.
As for them being tiny when found, I have had baby pinkies in the past, even had two born here on my porch. But these without a doubt were the smallest I had ever seen. Mutt is continuing to eat, poo, and pee. His little cord fell off just recently leaving a teeny "outie" belly button behind.:D Then poor little Jeff died yesterday just before Sarabi arrived here. Liz Harrell came by Saturday with three new babies.
I really haven't had time to really "be" on the board or look at emails. Still really have little time for anything but the babies. Grocery, post office, and vet office is all I did this week end.

:grouphug :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug Just checking in to see how the trooper is doing. I really hope for the best on this one. If I seemed disconnected yesterday, I am sorry, just too much going on. It was wonderful to meet ALL your babies, and you are doing such a wonderful job. Let me know if I can help in any way:grouphug :grouphug :grouphug

Well, here is Mutt today:D Tip of his tail dropped off, caught in a cotton ball.
He is a fusser, grunts and kicks whenever he's picked up. He is 9 days old today, and completely embedded in my heart :Love_Icon

That blasted stork hit here again today with 4 little 2 1/2 (?) week olds. Plus a woman called with 4 babies about 4 weeks old that she said she was bring today tinfoil tinfoil tinfoil :D
Lady Squirrelly isn't able to take any this week. However our beloved Digi will be arriving tonight to take 2 or 6, plus the rabbit to release. Can you hear the angels singing? Plus I am down for the count today with vertigo, so it's Chas also to the rescue here at home--I am going to stagger now to vomit in a dark, quiet, cool place.
